Strixhaven is such a blunt reference to Harry potter that I feel an immediate sneer crawl up face whenever I think about it. The set symbol is a bloody owl for Pete's sake!
I mean... it was not Harry Potter who invented the associations between wizards and owls, or between schools and owls.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

Correct, but the three of them together...
It just has a weird feeling to it.

The DnD set is a big turn off for me. The reason I like MtG is because of, well, MtG, creative included. Depending on the execution, the DnD set may be the very first set I'll actively skip.
This is exactly the reason why I hated the Godzilla crossovers, but I thought I was just paranoid, that there was no slippery slope going on, but here we are.
I’m in a state of shock right now about all these announcements of upcoming sets, upcoming Secret Lairs, and Zendikar Rising reveals, they may have hit even on my sweet spots, wow.

why would there be?
this is all the major sets for the upcoming year. as in 365 days. that's a long time.
its also only the major sets. its not all the little bull***** releases jammed in between, or the supplemental products. it would be a far different narrative if they also listed every secret lair and every other product jammed between or paired with those releases. 5 sets over a year long period isn't so bad, but by end of next year when its an avalanche of products like this year was it'll tell a completely different story.
Is nobody else amused that Strixhaven is hot on the heels of Scholomance, less than a year after Ikoria uh, borrowedGenn Greymane and Baku the Mooneater?

there is bound to be overlap, especially since hearthstone has people working on it that were formerly working on magic. as for any other wow connections... i mean... eh? really? i think its a stretch. wow hit peak popularity years ago and has been dying a slow horrid death. i think a lot of the time magic players confuse popular tropes, and similar mechanics, to other things that they enjoy or are familiar with where they shouldn't. kind of like the OMG ITS TWILIGHT rants when innistrad werewolves and vampires... years after twilight. its just trope, or an interesting mechanic, not everything is stolen from or inspired by whatever is popular (or perceived by some members of the community as popular)
There are 7 new sets announced as of today, and it's not like we don't know that Secret Lairs are still ongoing, and a commander product coming sometime between late summer and the fall. The only thing we can't really be sure of is what form of supplemental products will be released with each new set, or if the commander theme from '20 will stretch into '21. In short, next year is shaping up to be exactly like this one, so what justifiable reason do people have to complain about one year and not the other?
The link between Genn / Baku and companion is patently not a stretch.

Right?!?!
One of the longtime rules of a fictional universe is that its constituent parts have a degree consistency to them. Of course things can evolve and the tropes that other products explore be incorporated as well, but at least try to keep it sufficiently at arms length!

Strixhaven seems like a nod to all the people who love Harry Potter but have their enjoyment of that IP tainted since the author got herself cancelled. I think that's a pretty sizable audience so it makes sense to offer them up a set. Note that magic schools are not purely the domain of Harry Potter, just most popularly realized in HP. Hopefully Magic will give the setting its own special touch. We can definitely anticipate at least five houses representing different color combos.
I agree 100%. I love D&D but I love that Magic, for a very long time, had its own creative content. I don't like the Gozilla crossovers, the MLP crossovers, etc. either.

Purely being descriptive of the cancellation effect, people do seem to be craving magic school alternatives to Harry Potter. Fortunately I think this is a relatively rich trope in the fantasy genre although a little peculiar for a Magic set.
Edit: Hopefully they'll introduce a trans planeswalker as the MC as an extra dig at Rowling for that Lovecraft Country reclamation effect.
MTG already covered magical schools in the book The Gathering Dark. Its not the focus of the book but the Conclave of Mages in the second half feels like Hogwarts.

Kaldheim has potential if it features Snow and has an Arctic Circle vibe. I hope it's more of a Winter World with a Norse slant and not exclusively Norse Mythology World, because outside of a few select gods, I'm not too sure how resonant that mythos actually is to carry an entire set. That said, I've been wanting a Snow world.
Strixhaven - I wonder which plane this is on? Definitely gives me Harry Potter vibes. Evidently it's the name of the school, not the entire world. This could be promising.
DND - I'm not even sure what to expect, so no comment. Might be more interesting than the average core set.
Innistrad - I don't know honestly. The focus of both sets feels gimmicky. Geists are my favorite aspect of Innistrad, so the fact it isn't just a survey of the plane as a whole, but two niche sets is a bit concerning. That and I feel like there are a lot of gloomy sets next year. Kaldheim is a dread winter world, Strixhaven no doubt borrows a lot from England, and Innistrad is Gothic Horror. DND seems like the standout world to break the dark tones of all three sets.

They probably had the Idea, name, all the sketch arts, etc done before the cancelation...
Harry Potter just got a "push" in the last 1-2 years they saw that and made the set.
-----
Also, have anyone played the Harry Potter tcg?
People are trying to revive the game, there is even a fan/commitee made set that just got released
On a personal note, there's nothing in next years sets to get me overly excited about, it has been hell having to wait so long for Commander Legends (never been more hyped for a set).
They are overly-"exploring" european mythology tbh , we really need Kamigawa 2.0 or whatever plane Aminatou is from
Kaldheim will probably be the Hoth of MTG Fandom. Hoth I believe was an iceworld in the Star wars galaxy or universe right?

That would be absolutely lovely. As someone who's still a partial closeted MTF it'll be nice to see further representation outside of Alesha, Who Smiles at Death.
I guess I'm not partial anymore

The people acting like recent events somehow created things that were made over a year ago are pretty weird. MtG plans far too much in advance for a book this year or recent twitter drama to be the impetus behind things.
As far as the sets go School of Mages sounds like my place, I love magic. Norse set hopefully is decent but I’m not optimistic. DnD in Magic... eh, not my thing, but we’ve had Magic in DnD so I don’t see the harm. And Innisrad doesn’t appeal to me much, only tribe I like is Spirit from there.
the Harry Potter world being either a resurrection of shard color set (alara lost the shard factor)or secondary attempt at monomcolor focus like eldraine and Core 2021 did
Did they officially state that enemy fetchlands would be in Modern Horizons 2? Because they have stated that Modern Horizons sets are going to be devoted to printing new cards for Modern, and for new-to-Modern reprints. Enemy fetchlands check neither of those boxes.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Strixhaven - I wonder which plane this is on? Definitely gives me Harry Potter vibes. Evidently it's the name of the school, not the entire world. This could be promising.
I wonder if strixhaven is on a known plane (Vrynn? Kephalai? Kinshala? Mercadia?) or a brand new plane.
Got another prediction the Harry Potter world being either a resurrection of shard color set (alara lost the shard factor)
... why? Nothing about "magic school" makes me think about tricolor or Alara. Having a naya and a jund faction on a school would be very awkward imo.

Not surprised about Kaldheim, it was bound to happen in the near future. That being said I'm not all that excited about it. My interest in "tropey" norse culture stuff has cooled off quite a bit ever since Skyrim came out.
Strixhaven in the other hand seems promising to me somehow. I liked reading Harry Potter books back in middle school but I never turned into the biggest fan, and in recent years the franchise has really been ailing even if you ignore all the controversies (sometimes I still think about the absolute cluster**** that was Fantastic Beasts 2). So yeah, I'm ready for a new "magic school" setting seen through a Magic lens.
My number one fear is that they'll lean into HP too hard and choose Britain as the cultural backdrop. My personal favorite would be a vaguely eastern European setting (think the Baltic Countries), but I'd still be fine with a generic fantasy world. Just no Britain please.
The rest of the year is whatever to me. I'll never care about anything D&D (especially in Magic) and Innistrad is one of my least favorite planes out there. Modern Horizons 2 could be cool I guess.
Well Werewolf is my favorite tribe so the I like the fact that they are bringing in an entire set with them as a major focus.
Obviously being double sided cards they don't get much outside support other than in Innistrad sets.
Strixhaven sounds cool, and I wonder if actual Harry Potter licensed cards will be in it, akin to Ikoria/Godzilla. Actually Godzilla is my favorite film franchise but I wonder how a monster movie franchise got the drop on first crossover in place of something actually related to magic and fantasy like Harry Potter.
Twilight skin cards would be hilarious for Innistrad, but I doubt many would share my ironic glee.
Dungeons and Dragons sounds fine.
Strangely enough Kaldheim sounds the least interesting, despite a Viking set having being waited for so long.
