If you thought the Walking Dead crossover was enough, bu-bu-bu-baby you ain’t seen nothing yet!
Supposedly Innistrad is going to be a Castlevania-inspired crossover however some snags involving the IP licensing from Konami. Then an Eldraine II Set in early 2022 is to be inspired by a Chronicles of Narnia theme. And many more allegedly.
Watched this earlier as well. Was getting a real sense of dread for furture MTG. Though MaRo's tumblr post asking players how they'd like to see future crosovers, and the resounding response of "silver bordered only", gives me hope
These are stupid. I was cool with Godzilla because its ancient and it could use the love. Castlevania? Chronicles of Narnia? I am extremely disappointed. This feels like Magic is losing its roots.
The crossover things is cool and done right with the Godzilla theme promotional cards but the walking dead one is what they done wrong because it was restrictive, confusing and limited which causes out rages online.
I'm skeptical. This all feels too fast for them to go down the crossover train. I expect we might see some more crossover stuff this year as WotC tests the waters, but not this much.
But hey, maybe?
A year of not only DFC but also crossovers. I was already tentative about all the DFC, but then you add another gimmick on top of each set and each set maybe coming with another set/product with it makes this all sorts of....fun, maybe, iono.
Narnia feels like the wrong fit for Eldraine. With all of the religious allegories in it you'd think they'd want to stay away from it. Also, Eldraine 2 not even two years out after the first seems a little soon. You'd think they'd try and do King Arthur or something, but I guess that's not as "hip" with the youth.
Wait. You actually think that's he's right or that he's telling the truth? The guy's an idiot and that's being generous.
I haven't posted on here in close to a year but congratulations I logged in to tell you that Alpha Investments is wrong.

I'd say this "testing the waters" is tantamount to just cannonball'ing off the high dive.

Why would Konami - the makers of Yugioh - partner with Wizards of the Coast?
Partner with them? Do you understand how IP licensing works?
If you owned an IP and a competitor asked you about using it you do realize the ball is in your control right?
Konami gets to set the price they have to pay, what the can use and how long they can use it for. Sure WotC can haggle but they don’t have leverage to get a deal that favors them.
Seriously WotC had to pay Toho to use Godzilla and could only use them for Ikoria since Toho gave them a time frame they were allowed to use them for.
Toho didn’t lose any money from Ikoria. WotC sure lost sales because Ikoria released during the lock down of the Corona Pandemic.
Konami would lose nothing and only gain profits. Profits from a top competitor in the TCG/CCG market.

Just a small quibble but while Ikoria came out during the worse part of the pandemic I think it sold fine. The targets in my area were constantly sold out and my lgs from what I can tell is still running strong (they sell comics and other fun stuff as well).
So on topic I’m more suspicious of these just for the simple fact that I don’t think Innistrad needs a gimmick to sell it. They could have easily reskinned Zendikar with D&D but instead they are giving both sets there own time to shine. Also from my limited experience with castlevania I remember some werewolves but the main event is the vampires. Innistrad from the sounds of it is going to be two sets with werewolves and vampires being the face of them. If all of the awesome cards are attached to vampires it would diminish the popularity and sales of the opposite set.

I probably wouldn't have as much of a problem with IP crossovers in MTG If Wizards of the Coast had an official poll to determine what intellectual properties are about to be put into the game where the community actually has a voice on the matter instead of just Wizards of the Coast picking a random IP from a drawing to see what sells and what doesn't without our stamp of approval. The bigger concern about IP crossovers in MTG itself isn't so much about the quality of them (while that's still important) but rather the quantity that makes the actual game lose it's sense of identity where all you're really doing is playing an MTG version of Weiss Schwarz (anime/manga crossovers) or Universal Fighting System (fighting game crossovers).
For those who may not remember back in the mid 2000's there was a Paper Trading Card Game / Collectible Card Game made by Upper Deck called Marvel / DC Vs. System before it was re-branded as a Living Card Game with the same name. Shortly before it got discontinued for World of Warcraft TCG which eventually became known today as Hearthstone there were talks about incorporating other intellectual properties into the game aside from just Comic Books. The only franchise that made the cut was Hellboy before Vs. System was shortly discontinued there on after. I still held out for Todd McFarlane's Spawn to be incorporated however it just wasn't meant to be unfortunately.

Doesn't WotC function three years out? So any need to get work out IP rights with Konami for a set in the next 2 years has either already happened (A while ago), or isn't happening if the rumor is that it's for an upcoming set.
While TWD crossover does nothing for me, I don't mind them. I'd rather they be silver border or reprinted soon after in a regular set as non-crossed over cards.
That said, I'm a sucker for Castlevania, so if you get me Alucard, Trevor, Sypha, Dracula, etc. I'm a happy camper. Would love to make Castlevania EDH decks.

PS I’m curious on the Castlevania crossover. Loved that series growing up and has a more fantasy feel than TWD.

As long as they keep it to promos like the Godzilla stuff, I'm ok with it.
I wonder what he must be thinking about the game he created and where it's going.
