Not to say I told you so, but I told you so, before the first ban I called for omnath to be banned and uro got it instead.
Now we got no uro, no omnath and no clover.
Let the games begin!

It (and Uro) are too powerful for Pioneer as well, but playership of Pioneer is as low as its ever been. Without some help the format is going to die on the vine. Pioneer needs robust and regular bannings to keep it fresh so it doesn't devolve into a narrow format, its on its way there right now. WotC still wants to sell Omnom so it will remain until the next set drops. Its all about the Benjamins to Hasbro.
they should drop Pioneer altogether.....
and replace it with historic also on paper.....
historic has a big following because of Arena and is a pretty fun format.
if Pioneer was fully developed on arena, then it would most likely be played, as is today it's a format that no one asked and that doesn't really make any sense at all.
Lack of in person paper tournaments and events is slowly killing Pioneer. Once we dig out from covid19 it will pick up. Not everyone wants to play on Arena, paper is so much more an immersive experience than either of the dopplegangers Arena and Online. Historic is the half step between Modern and Pioneer. If Modern and Pioneer show up on Arena, Historic will fade into the shadows. Time will tell on this one.
yeah, sure, playing on paper is a lot cooler, no question about that.
still, I think that what will pick up once events resume normally is not Pioneer...
people will play standard, Modern, Commander, Legacy.... I doubt Pioneer will ever be big.
it would have a much bigger chance if it existed on Arena.
Is it just me or is that playtest team they created only a few years ago suddenly not doing their jobs.
Very likely being ignored completely. Moreover, they are playing inside an environment where these bans weren't implemented. If they look at a set as a whole, or a standard environment as a whole and try to find balance they can be successful. However, the moment a top card is banned, it completely shifts the "balance" of all the remaining cards.
Ban field of the dead? Oko becomes oppressive.
Ban Oko? Uro becomes oppressive.
etc, etc, etc,
This is partly why the bannings always feel so ineffective.
The other side of the coin is that Wizards' leadership has decided to follow the League of Legends style business model. You print and deliver an overwhelming card or cards to sell the set (creating chase cards). They know it will mess things up, but it's also successful in selling the boxes. Then, when the goals have been reached, ban the card to set themselves up for future chase cards.
League of Legends does this with their monthly champions and it's no secret. It's also wildly successful.

This business model only works with a lot of stupid people that buy it.
So the solution is to make the people more intelligent, not buy into these cards or ignore entire sets till they fix their idiotic business practice.
Pretty simple, i already do it, join me.
(Just buy the ~50$ cards of a set as singles you can use for some decks and then ignore it, especially ignore the stupendously overpriced "special" sets that are a gigantic waste of money anyway)
Want special artwork ?
Pay an artist for alters , guaranteed unique art just for you on real cards delivered faster than what WotC is doing with their messed up logistics.
With WotCs current course theres no winners, everyone loses.

Pioneer will pick back up, it was gaining momentum until covid hit. An introduction on Arena would help. Pioneer does offer a place for those Standard players who have their Omnaths and Uros a place to play them without a cost of stepping up to Fetchlands in Modern. Pioneer won't be as big as Modern but what will happen is Modern will warp into Legacy 2.0 and play will fall, Pioneer will warp into Modern 2.0 and may enjoy a resurgence until it also eventually warps into Legacy 3.0 after many many years.

Okay? I mean, I'm not the person buying these cards but thanks, I suppose?
I understand where your statement is coming from but just because I outlined the model doesn't mean I buy into it as a consumer.
Nonetheless, you say the solution is simple. Sure, it is. But it's by no means easy as made evident by the popularity and success of the model in other digital games such as League...
