I have a question as to the timing of the group hug. If my opponent group hugs me, and I proceed to cast a creature with haste or activate a manland, do those creatures have to attack Gideon as well, or are they free to attack his controller?

The creatures aren't targeted, you are. The ability sets up a delayed effect. During your combat phase, each creature you control attacks Gideon if able. That means that it doesn't matter when they came into play, if it's your turn after Gideon's group hug was activated, during your combat phase, each creature you control that's able to attack must be declared as an attacker attacking Gideon.
Can gideon be smothered? Smother <--- just in case you don't know what smother is :|
Nope. CMC of Gideon > 3. Just like manlands (ala Celestial Colonnade) have a CMC of 0 when they are animated, Gideon has a CMC of 5, so while manlands can get Smothered, Gideon cannot.

So I can use Gideon's Taunt ability even when the opponent has no creatures because the ability is targetting opponent not creatures themselves right? (thus earning the 2 loyalty counters)
Why do you have to sacrifice Gideon if a creature with annihilator attacks? If a creature that was taunted was attacking with annihilator 4, how many do you sacrifice? 4 in total with Gideon or just the 1 Gideon?
When Gideon is sacrificed to annihilator, are you allowed to not declare blockers (assuming you have creatures) and not take damage at all? (So any unblocked creatures deal nothing to you?)

1. Sure, it only targets the player.
2. Who said you had to sacrifice Gideon? It a creature has Annihilator 4, it means you have to sac 4 permanents.
3. If Gideon gets sacced, the unblocked attacking creatures will deal no combat damage.

If any of the creatures forced to attack him have Annihilator, and he must be sacrificed to it, unblocked creatures attacking him will not assign combat damage.
That's not saying that he's sacrificed. That's saying "If you have an Annihilator 6 coming at you, and you only control 6 permanents including Gideon, then you have to sac Giddeon, but you don't take damage."
I'd just like to point out that it is theoretically possible to block with Gideon, for example if you activate him in your precombat main phase and your opponent Dominates him, you could then proceed to attack him with the rest of your creatures. No idea if your opponent could then block with Gideon or if Gideon would lose loyalty if creatures went unblocked.

Despite the fact that Dominate is an enchantment, and so normally couldn't be played during an opponent's turn, it's already known that there are small corner cases where Gideon could block. It's already been described as to what would happen if Gideon blocks.

Permanents are anything you on the battlefield (I.E. lands, creatures, artifacts, enchantments and anything else that's laid out in front of you)
You can't have more than 1 Gideon on the field anyway, because whenever two are out they die as a state-based effect. (Like the legendary rule, you can only have one out on the battlefield at a time).

That doesn't actually correct the misconception.
You don't have to sacrifice Gideon when a creature with Annihilator 4 attacks, you have to sacrifice 4 permanents. If you only control 4 permanents, Gideon being one of those four, then you'll have to sacrifice all of them (which includes Gideon).
