A guide of dates, names and events leading up to the release of previous and upcoming expansions. To compare when to expect which information.
Every year sees the release of 4 sets and many standalone box sets.
Type 2 and extended rotate every October with the release of the next block's big expansion. Core sets are released every summer, and for three months, both are legal.
In general, card design for a big set will start about 20 months before the release date. After it leaves R&D's hands, it has to go through editing, typesetting, collation (randomization), manufacturing, and distribution. A big set released in October will be 'in the can' in February.
(All the codenames before Alliances were essentially the names the products ended up with.)

Anyway, if I could ask a quick question, why hasn't Wizards announced anything after M13? Do they have some sort of contract with Hasbro? Did they run out of good nicknames? What's up?

Although always playing a deck I think is fun, I'm also always trying to win the tournament.

As far as I'm aware, they only start working on the sets a couple of years in advance. Chances are they just started designing for Rattle. I'm probably wrong though, don't quote me on it.

We do not encourage, condone or support the breaking of NDAs or other legal contracts. Do not do it. It’s not worth the risk and consequences that it brings to you and us.
what?

They work on sets years in advance, not the flavor, but the cards they want and when in standard and what cards are going to do to existing formats. If you read mothership articles referencing the 'future-league' and the 'future-future-league'.
First thanks to the op for the informative thread.
2nd should this contain info about magic online release dates and things of that nature it seems like that chould be important info aswell to add to the thread.

What's up?
Currently playing:
M13 Draft
GGGGG Dungrove................(STANDARD)
GWGWG Maverick..................(LEGACY)
Jon Finkel on the PWP System:
This should be July 2010.
Practice for Khans of Tarkir Limited:
Draft: (#1) (#2) (#3) (#4) (#5)
As far as I'm aware, they only start working on the sets a couple of years in advance. Chances are they just started designing for Rattle. I'm probably wrong though, don't quote me on it.

They work on sets years in advance, not the flavor, but the cards they want and when in standard and what cards are going to do to existing formats. If you read mothership articles referencing the 'future-league' and the 'future-future-league'.
