Just wanted to start a speculation thread to see what ideas people were considering for our next Commander Product.
Some ideas I have been considering:
VILLAINS -- Each Commander deck would be themed around an iconic villain from Magic. They could do a Phyrexia deck (Mono Black with Artifacts), Nicol Bolas (featuring a Planeswalker you could use as a Commander), etc.
PLANES -- Decks featured around a specific plane and the themes strongest on those planes.
Dimir Ninja's from Kamigawa; for another wayto reprint Sakashima's Student and other ninjutsu crap printed. Although that idea runs a little too parallel to the esper deck from last cycle.
I've suggested a Plane theme myself before, and I've determined that the biggest obstacle for a plane theme this year is the fact three of the most popular planes - Mirrodin, Zendikar, and Theros - center around or heavily feature themes that were just done last year: Artifacts, Land, and Enchantments. Now Ravnica and Innistrad are also highly popular, the two most popular in fact, and their most probable themes - Multicolor and Graveyard - are available for this year. Ravnica can be either WUBRG (most likely using a "one and all" Jace since he's the Guildpact) or WU (with Azor as the probable face card, since he helped found the Guildpact). Innistrad would obviously be WB with Sorin as the commander, and the Fourth Sister as a very likely second.
The question then is what third plane gets featured? And the reason I only say third and not also fourth is because they now have a rule that one of the four decks each year has to be off-theme because apparently some players didn't like C17 being all tribal decks (boo!). Thus C18's Esper deck was themed after Topdeck rather than card types. Tarkir to me seems the next most likely due to the popularity of Dragons and Wedges. Sarkhan could easily helm a GUR Tarkir deck themed around Dragons with smatterings of Morph and various Tarkir mechanics in the mix, leaning Temur and Atarka but also allowing the other Clans and Broods some representation.
As for villains, if they did a Bolas deck, I think there would be an expectation for the other decks to have villainous CPWs as well. We did just get Nicol Bolas, the Ravager in Core 19, so there is technically a recent Bolas option for Commander. If there was a Phyrexian deck, I'd want it to be WUBRG with Karn, Father of Machines as the commander. They could still include a Yawgmoth legend in the deck, and maybe find a clever way of turning him into a WUBRG commander using "one and all" technology similar to Tazri and Najeela, since even back in the Invasion days Phyrexia wasn't strictly monoblack.
If you want a villain theme, the decks should be themed around villains who don't have good or any representation yet. Volrath really wanted to be UB, so Commander could be a good chance for him to get a second shot, though there is the little problem that his primary minions are red Moggs. Leshrac and Tevesh Szat never got cards either, and they're planeswalkers to boot. A BR Ob Nixilis would be tempting, but he did get a CPW before. The Fourth Sister could be another good candidate, for either an Innistrad-themed deck or as part of the villain theme.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
In my dreams, this year's product will be plane themed and will feature legends from minor/lesser known/obscure/old planes like Lorwyn, Kamigawa, Mercadia, Segovia or Ulgrotha.
If they were still doing 5 decks a round, it'd be really cool to see a Nephilim theme and do more 4 color things. Have that as the close out to Ravnica.
All I know is that I'm hoping for a Jeskai deck. Jeskai, Gruul, or Azorius.

They do often throw old legends in the mix though, so even if the decks aren't themed directly around them, some of your favorite legends might be featured in the products!
I would not mind seeing tribal decks again I suppose. I really want a Black/Blue Faerie tribal deck.
Whatever the themes are, I hope to goodness that they put more effort into the decks than they did with the Jund Lands Matter deck. That was a terrible shambles, and a severe disappointment.
I'd like to see the enemy wedges represented, I'd like to see Rogue tribal in UB or even Grixis, though I hate the inclusion of Red (Rogues are easier to support as a tribe than Ninjas, even though they're not as exciting or thematic), I'd like to see what they can make for BR that isn't either ridiculously overcosted or just wonky. I'd like another Selesnya deck, though I'm sure we won't be getting one (seriously, cats and artifacts? The color pair HATES artifacts and you give it an equipment subtheme, ugh).
I'm 95% certain it won't be tribal again, just to get that out of the way; announcing a change from color based to theme based to keep things fresh and interesting and then repeating a theme after two years is not a good look. 'sides, there are so many, many more types of decks that could be done - it's not a small well of design space because the themes could clearly be as tight (mechanical) or as amorphous (purely flavor) as is needed.

I hope for the love of everything the decks are tight(ish). Flavor does not win games, although it may win you compliments.
Artifacts has been done to death, in my opinion, so I hope they leave that alone for a year or two yet. What about one deck each dedicated to an archetype? Aggro, Combo, Control, Midrange?
I think we can count on each color showing up in 2-3 decks per cycle.
Fighters, Mages, and Thieves could be an interesting triad of deck themes, with the fourth deck being themed around lifegain and thereby also allowing Healers to join the fun.
RGW Fighters - Knights, Warriors, and Samurai ready to charge into battle armed to the teeth with Equipment. URW Mages - Wizards, Shamans, and Monks that love to cast instant and sorcery spells, especially those with Flashback and Rebound. UBR Thieves - Rogues, Pirates, and Ninjas that use evasion, sabotage, and other sneaky tricks to steal permanents and accumulate Treasure. WBG Life - Artifacts, creatures, and enchantments that provide lifegain, care about lifegain, and use life as a resource.

I could maybe see noncreature subtypes, but that would likely feel very similar to last year's theme. Though they did tribal a couple years ago, one of which was Dragons, what if they went for a Medieval theme this year? I'm thinking Knights, Dragons, Royalty. A Knight tribal deck is long overdue. The Dragon deck this time can be more focused in colors, obviously centered on red and probably including green and blue to compliment the WB Knight deck. Royalty can be outright WUBRG, including characters like Konda, Michiko, Darien, Savra, Brago, and Marchesa.

So you think we'll get planeswalker commanders again? I haven't been following the talk on that topic recently, but in the past it sounded like they intentionally wanted to keep that as an "every other time"-thing, decidual (if they go with a "Villains"-theme they obviously would make an exception for e. g. Bolas, but for planes... not necessary; leaving more room for plane-bound legendaries would be a feature rather than a bug for a Plane-themed Commander product). I think, they were clearly refering to mechanical themes when they consider going of-brand with one deck. One of the side-effects of tribal is a creature-focus which might be the issue there. Though I also agree that the complaints in the first place are obscure to me.
You didn't mention Dominaria, right? After its glorious return (and it seemed to be considered glorious across different groups AFAIK) it would make a good candidate - and historic is made for Commander, so just piling some more designs with that on top of the existing would be neat - and more versatile than another pure artifact deck that you would associate with Mirrodin (though technically we would get a New Phyrexia deck - and that could be a mixed theme including counters and more proliferate (after all they fail to put it into Standard a lot for Development reasons and probably have some neat designs lying around)).
---
If Bolas gets defeated soon then following that up with a Commander product featuring the big ol' loser seems... inopportune?

I'd be all for a WUBRG Dominaria/Weatherlight/Coalition deck helmed by Gerrard. Ideally, he'd be a RW legend with a WUBRG ability. I'd love to see new cards for Karn, Ertai, Crovax, Tahngarth, Eladamri, and maybe Starke, not to mention a card for Takara, though getting that many new legends in a single Commander deck is unlikely.

Remember that three of those legends were commanders; only two, Taigam and Wasitora, were subcommanders. My suggesed decklist could easily make room for a WUBRG Karn, while Ramos would probably be the third commander. So, we might get two or three new Weatherlight members. Much as I'd like a new Tahngarth, he has a card that isn't Reserved, so characters like Ertai, Starke, and Eladamri would probably take priority here.

I feel like this suggestion would be very "on theme" with how they have been visualizing Commander product design space lately. Heck, I have considered making a jank deck of some sort to fill this particular concept (sadly with a random 5 color commander).
The "Plane Themed" idea is also interesting. It would allow for multiple unique planes, each with unique flavor and mechanics, to be seen and the design space explored outside of Standard. I feel like this would almost necessitate a "global" enchantment for each plane that alters the rules according to each plane's nature. That last concept, however, sounds a lot like Planechase which I guess is another option - blending the Planechase and Commander IPs (which I have heard some playgroups do as a subformat?). IMO, a Planechase / Commander official varient could be dang fun too if properly supported.

Ramos, Dragon Engine isn't a terrible choice for such a deck, since you'll presumably be running a lot of multicolor cards. Captain Sisay and Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain are a house team in a deck that wants multicolor, legendary, and artifacts.

To me it seems lazy to do the "popular" themes or planes.
Lets step it up WOTC and make some things high on the scale (that would never be normally printed as a set)
Particularly, I would want Ulgrotha, Rabiah, Mercadia and Muraganda.
Sorry if that would lead to them having to do some work to make interesting new things instead of an easy out.

If Bolas gets defeated soon then following that up with a Commander product featuring the big ol' loser seems... inopportune?
Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."

If its planes what Planes? Dominaria, Ravnica and Innistrad for sure. What is the last pick? Zendikar?
Lets step it up WOTC and make some things high on the scale (that would never be normally printed as a set)
Particularly, I would want Ulgrotha, Rabiah, Mercadia and Muraganda.
Sorry if that would lead to them having to do some work to make interesting new things instead of an easy out.
Shandalar? (It would give them a chance to give it a *real* identity)
