Interesting. I wonder what they have planned for the remnants of the Gatewatch following whatever happens in WAR. I guess that leaves out New Phyrexia as people had originally speculated, for now at least.
Maybe the GW won't be the emphasis of the story and maybe in a year or so we'll have a "reunion" episode or reboot later down the line.
Jaters can probably do a silent cheer by the looks of it.

Wasn't it Prison World (and I guess also Gladiator World) that was the original concept for Mirrodin? That's certainly "over a decade" but if Rosewater wanted to emphasize how long he'd been working on the idea he'd probably refer to that as "almost two decades".
Piggy backing off the chandra comic I could see a Viking world. A fire mage would be a stark contrast to a lot of settings and add some vibrancy to an otherwise relatively monotone color palate for the world.
There was also maros open question regarding the player bases feelings on snow duals like 1-1.5 years ago on social media - which would have been early in the sets life. Players have been asking for snow basics for a long while as well.
Then there is all the Game of Thrones hype that at least some of the playerbase has going on, and piggy backing off that could be a smart marketing move. I'm not talking about cross over marketing, but just setting reinforcement through various types of media to help psych up the playerbase.
I'm hoping for a Viking world. Seems like a great time to do it.
I thought i seen somewhere that it was gonna be a nurse style plan.
If that's the case though hopefully there isnt gods again I'm kinda over that mechanic/type. Always makes it where one of them is always really good and problematic and the rest are meh.

If you think Norse means monotone, I got news for you, the Vikings loved color, all the colors. Heck, one of the primary reasons they traveled to the Mediterranean to trade with the Romans was to exchange copper and iron for cloth of colors they couldn't produce themselves (like purple). Not to mention surprisingly large amounts of wildlife up here in Scandinavia are incredibly colorful. Even the humble European Magpie is a cornucopia of color if you see one up close. Those black feathers? Yeah, they're not black, they shimmer in every friggin color of the rainbow and only look black from a distance. In addition to that, we have many small birds in vivid reds, yellows, greens, and blues. And that is not even going into things like amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects (we have golden, silver, emerald and azure dragonflies galore during the late summer). Among the animals its pretty much only the mammals that stick to muted colors. And then there are the flowers, every color you can imagine, and then some, there are over 40 native species of Orchid in Sweden alone.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
But on a serious post they could have a 5 colour Norse or Viking themed set riddled with Ragemonger effects to help certain archetypes and colour schemes. Might be an idea.
I can't really see how they do a "Wild West" plane really. It just seems to modernized and less fantasy based. I can't see how they make handguns and typhus magic related.
The only thing that makes me doubt that we'll go to Norse World next is the fact that, once we're done with the War of the Spark, the most likely story thread to go with would be Return to New Phyrexia, but returning to New Phyrexia seems unlikely until we get our Return to Theros, and there's no way they could properly space two Return to Plane blocks and two Mythology-Based Plane blocks without having too much repetition.

By giving mages handguns and typhus?
But honestly I really agree with you. The core tropes of the setting don't translate all that well to MtG. Sure, you can put Jace in a cowboy hat and chaps, but it's just going to look stupid, and it's never going to capture the heart of Wild West fiction anyway. The mere fact that it's planeswalking telepath under there really undermines the setting.

Its an entire line of fiction called Weird West. That the oldest book is from 1932. Its actually a very popular genre as you might tell from both the text and visual examples.
I wouldn't mind seeing what that "plane with diamond storms" is all about.
EDIT: I misread the linked text, so I was thinking about the planes we would be visiting in Core 2020.
I'm not very sold on the idea of a wild west set. They already went for the bloodthirsty colonizers Vs. noble natives angle in Ixalan (the colonizers were literally vampires) and with what WotC wrote in the past, having native-north-american-inspired plane is walking on eggshells to avoid "offending" anyone (which is impossible if you have people whose only aim in life is to get offended to earn victim points). Plus I'm not sold to the idea of handheld firearms, even Kaladesh had absurd contraption for firing at a distance and Ixalan only had cannons on ships.
On the other hand, they managed to get it decently riht with Kaladesh, so... May be WotC will manage to surprise me in a positive way, for a change.
Norse makes the most sense. Beyond that it's hard to say. Like, over a decade doesn't give us much of an idea of what it could be given that there are a lot of things that people see thrown around. Really hoping not Wild West though.
When even Mark Rosewater has to state in a poll on his tumblr:
If you're interested, you may also tell me why you want to return to that plane. You can list any known plane including ones we've never visited before. I need names of existing planes though and not "wild west plane."
You know there is a strong interest for it.
Oh and both planes are both "minor when". That there is also some hangups with the Viking plane as well from what was said back in Feburary.
A character can gave guns, it just needs to be resting on their person like with Dire Fleet Captain rather than wielded like with Alaborn Zealot. That instead of hand guns you got spells and lassos and knives and hatchets and bows and machine guns and cannons. That you can still have bandoliers, perhaps its how they carry their mana on their person to fuel their spells based on their plane's technology level.
Native americans or an analogue of them can be portrayed, it just needs to be respectful. Also they already got people offended with their portrayal of the natives in Ixalan even though they tried to be respectful, so they might as well get it over with.
If you think a Weird West plane sounds weird, try some of the more recent concepts over the years. A D&D themed plane that also has lovecraftian monsters trapped inside (Zendikar), a plane based on celtic folklore with no humans on it (Lorwyn), a plane that is already sundered into five shards and a cataclysm event caused by a dragon brings them together (Alara), a plane based on gothic horror and later lovecraftian horror (Innistrad), a plane that is India but mixed with aetherpunk (Kaladesh), a plane based on greeco-roman myths (Theros), a plane that is about a lost city and features dinosaurs/vampire conquistadors/south-american merfolk/pirates and the main treasure is a planar-locking device created by a now sparkless old-planeswalker who is also the creator of the guildpact and the azorious guild for an entirely other plane (Ixalan).
I thought i seen somewhere that it was gonna be a nurse style plan.
If that's the case though hopefully there isnt gods again I'm kinda over that mechanic/type. Always makes it where one of them is always really good and problematic and the rest are meh.
could totally see that after a war
some heal wounds
all heal post traumatic stress dissorder ... like yes, why is that not a thing ?
That's probably just my bias on the matter. In the end it is probably that I just find the old west setting unappealing and hard to fit into a multiverse that has various degrees of fantastic settings, in the same way I would find a modern-day or a cyberpunk setting out of place in MtG.
I think it has been hinted a few times, that the next plot after the Eldrazi and Bolas will be the Phyrexians, so I really think we will see them back soon. There might be a Set or two, that just set it up, so maybe a new Plane makes sense. I expect to see the surviving Planeswalkers to go different ways and maybe the next year from Rotation is showing sone connections to the Phyrexians and then reuniting them after that. I don't expect them to be as big as the Bolas plot, but Karn seems to be a big player in that story. I think it is a pretty good bet to see a Return to Theros, as most players would like to see Elspeth back and if Gideon dies (which seems really strange for me to see him die before we get to visit Theros with him, but maybe they will bring him to Theros, when he dies, that he can go the underworld?) it seems a good fit to get Elspeth as the mono White main character, that fits really good in a Phyrexian plot line. I really would love to see Dack and Ashiok back too. But I would be suprised if Theros was not at least one set in the 2019/2020 season. With the new set structure I can also see two plots being made together, so we will jump from one to the other after 1-2 sets and maybe mix at some point and most likely it will be dependend on what characters will die, but I don't expect one of their faces to die except for maybe Gideon. Personally I like to see favourite characters more frequently, but that doesn't mean we need more than one version per character in Standard and some rotation would be nice (e.g. see Tamiyo for two years instead of Jace as the blue PW or Elspeth instead of Gideon etc.).
Viking plane would be so sick and it's ripe with potential for different types of cards. Valkyries/Angels, monsters, gods, barbarians, ships, shamans, druids, warriors, equipment, beasts and tons of other stuff. It's got so much potential!
My biggest wish, if it is a norse style set, would be snow covered full art lands HHHNNNNGGGG That would be so sick!!! They don't even have to be "snow basics" but just like they made Amonkhet style lands in that set, they could make norse style lands with snow themes.
I'd also be hype for a Chinese themed set, but viking or wild west is probably more likely. I'm not too hype about a wild west style set to be honest though.
