I didn't know whether this should be a new thread or a side-note in another...
BUT, I have noticed we don't really talk about price jumps (for whatever reasons) any more. Does it feel like wasted effort? Did too many [price jumps] happen between 2017 & 2018 that it is asinine to even discuss it any more? Has the dead horse been beaten into the ground too deeply? Or is it that not as many folks are coming to the Cafe any more?
I still drop by daily to see if any new chatter pops up.
I bet this thread will get at least 30 views today, and maybe, just MAYBE, if I am lucky, one reply... wonder if anyone will prove me wrong (out of defiance or spite, lol)...
The biggest contributor is that the various price-tracking threads for various sets were retired and the concept sent to the front page (which is now the Magic Market Index). Those threads were where most of the discussion happened. Now it's a new thread every week, and people probably don't realize that they're actual open threads, and can be commented upon. Personally, I lament the loss.
Of course, if you're talking about RL price spikes, that's a different story, and for me the story goes "Ugh, another card jumping for no reason except speculation." I got sick of saying it, so I stopped. I imagine that many others have a similar feeling.

Yup... I know it's economics, but it's squeezing me out of playing Legacy.

That is why I jumped on the Puca Trade band wagon early... gave me access to cards that were rarely ever seen in trade binders or that you would have to cough up an arm and a deck for at a brick n' mortar... but w/ the spikes, it's now very difficult to get Reserved List cards sent for 2 reasons: 1) the prices are already insane & 2) fear of a ransom spike keeps the RL cards in their binders. I know I had made some mistakes sending out cards from the RL that weren't ABU or Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse because I didn't think there would be spikes that were harsh after The Dark. Learned my lesson (like many others did).
I am also disappointed that there is no discussion anymore in all price threads. There is definitely a lot to talk about, but the interest is pretty low in this community. Another problem is that there are also price discussion threads in the modern and legacy subforum. But I also have the feeling that since curse took over there is not much going on here anymore.

I haven't quite figured out why the Curse switch would have much effect on anything. Seems to work about like before.
I think the issue is threefold.
1. Magic Popularity is waning. I hate to say it, but since RTR it's been what seems like a steady decline.
2. Facebook is killing web forums. I see it all over. Once thriving forums are dying off as the older guard gets busy with families and such, the younger fans are simply not using forums.
3. Even on Facebook things are slow. Nobody seems to be talking about much. Reddit is better, but it's just not the same.

I think the curse/twitch issue was that you had to create new usernames and many people just didn't want or didn't understand why... That's why we have fewer people who actually post here...
1. I don't think mtg loses popularity. The problem might be that we have so many new formats like cube, brawl, frontier, etc. So people are less active in the established formats, because they want to try something new and different.
2. This is sadly true. I was also way more active here, but since I have a job it's really difficult to find enough time to read and post.
3. I never liked reddit and I do think that this part of the forum should be reworked. It would be better to just have 2 price discussion threads. One with cards from 8th edition till today, the other one with older cards (for example).

So, Modern and Older, instead of the five that we've got now? Personally, I feel that if we compact them that much, we may as well just have one thread for "Price deltas". But I'm always open to hearing feedback, so if you'd like to make any pitches about how the Café could be restructured to improve traffic, be assured that you have my full attention. If I may ask, why do you favor a two-thread approach?

Yes maybe one thread is enough... because you cannot always determine which format is responsible for a spike. Maybe we could have two threads. One about recent spikes and another one for speculation.
When Curse took over, some people just didn't like it, didn't want to be associated with it. Whether or not it was just Curse, or a combination of other factors, bottom line is Curse didn't help matters.
The trades/sales area took a massive hit in viewership when this site changed how users had to create their threads. It became too much work.
Reddit is king of message boards now, it just gets so much more traffic even if it's toxic at times. YMMV. Plus now you have to compete with real time options such as twitch/discord. I have seen many gaming message boards fall by the wayside and lose users.
Spikes had already been occurring with the player boon for a few years (helped by Woo/Safron and others), but last years bitcoin craze dumped so much capital into Magic that just about anything mentioned online created a buzz/spike pump/dump whatever you want to call it. FOMO was at an all time high.
Demographics of the game are changing and with that change comes real life responsibility. This is cyclical in nature and perhaps we are in a bit of a lull.

When Curse took over, half the forum users could no longer log in under their old usernames.
With apologies to the mods (and Curse), if I'm being generous, it was single most poorly managed 'Migration from Thing A to Thing B' I have ever witnessed. Users were effectively kicked out. Trying to resolve it just left users confused, then frustrated, then they stopped coming altogether. I almost did myself and I've been here forever.

They never came back. Here we are.
Pretty simple, really.
Fully agree. I lost my old account, couldn't log back in.
The identity associated with hundreds if not thousands of posts was lost.
When that was lost, I lost my tie to this site. On top of that a few other forums were removed or altered.
It just seemed like it was time to move on with my life.
That I still post here at all, is just a distant recognition of an old habit. It doesn't help that it feels like there isn't much to come back to.
I don't blame the mods. As far as I know, the mods have zero financial incentive to do anything.
Why should they put the onus on themselves to help curse.com make best it can be for them?

The only areas that are still active look like the deckbuilder, rumors and mtg general.
