I had just realized there is no official thread to post scams that are going around, either locally or globally. I believe this should have been here a long time ago to warn gamers, collectors, and shop owners.
(IF this is a good idea, can a moderator please restructure this thread with specific rules of posting, i.e. - state the location, how long it has been going on, and the red flags. And if any other pertinent info needs to be provided, please include it too
I think, as a community, we need to have each others backs since there are thousands upon thousands of scam artists, impostors, thieves, and crooks out there taking advantage of us. This is one way to fight back; to educate all of us to what is out there. The wolf pack survives by howling at the first sight of danger. So if you see or hear anything, howl as loud as you can so we all know what is going down.
For Southern California, specifically Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura County, Riverside County and San Bernadino County:
For 2 weeks now an individual from an unspecified Asian country has been trying to sell boxes of Beta for $5,000. He claims that the boxes have a value of $120,000. I already spoke w/ the owner of a local game store about the find on OfferUp. I was skeptical because the old rule of "too good to be true" came to mind. He told me that the scam has been bouncing around for a couple weeks now.
Please warn any shop or high-end Magic collectors. Not too sure how the scam is being made (are they fakes, are you robbed, etc...), but the whole thing should be avoided.
P.S. - just went and reported the post as a scam. Will see how long until it is taken down - hopefully soon.
