Well, Wizards has gone as ****ed us good. Here is an article discussing the situation. Basically, they are making PPTQ's meaning that instead of a PTQ you have to win a Preliminary to qualify for a Regional to then get your invite to the Pro Tour. Which means grinders are screwed.
>You have to qualify to qualify just to get to the Pro Tour now
ON TOP OF THAT(Here comes the best ******* part!)
They are now giving stores the option of what format ALL PTQ's are! Meaning, NO MORE MODERN SEASON. We will no longer have a 4 month period in which all PTQs are Modern format. This means, stores will get to chose from Modern, Standard and Sealed. BUT what store is going to host a Modern one when they can host EITHER Standard or Sealed and make ALOT more money? None. This is basically saying that if you don't play Standard and Sealed you will likely be ***** out of luck when it comes to going to a PPTQ or RPTQ.
But here is where it gets even worse.
Instead of around 300 players qualifying for the Pro Tour every season (edit), even with every single event reaching Max capacity and giving out Max invite, the most you will see is around 248.
AND now if you get Top 8 of ANY GP you are now getting an invite to the Pro Tour.
This last part is probably the ONLY good news. It means that the easiest way to get into the Pro Tour is by getting top 8 of a GP. Now this is difficult but WAY easier than say driving X hours to get to a PPTQ, winning, and then driving X more hours to another location for a RPTQ that you have to get Top 4 just to qualify for.
I fail to see any downside. This will require a whole lot less driving, modern prelims all year round instead of just 2x a year during the modern PTQ season, and a much better local experience. Modern is my favorite format and I'm fairly happy with all the changes.
Eh, I'm renaming this thread. It's more than a little misleading.
Remember that Modern GPs are massive attendance magnets and that this format is growing quickly. There is a lot of incentive for local stores to do Modern events; players come out to these in force. It also means that we can have year-round Modern events instead of just a set season and then a huge off-season where there are few (if any) local American tournaments. I imagine we would see something in the States more like what we see in Italy, with dozens of 80-100 player events every few months.
This is definitely not unambiguously bad for Modern. There are a lot more pieces at play here than your post gives credit.
I can see the concern. In savannah, they wouldnt have done modern if it werent for the ptqs. However, if im reading this correctly then this means there will be lots of 300 touris rather than 4 of x formats in 4 months, right?
Edit: actually it just sounds like they are killing off the season. Not sure if i likr that. It night end up makin modern more poular in the long run, buy i liked seasons, as it let me take a break, have something to work too, and what not.
But in the upside, it means decks will constantly be evolving, in a slower meta change, that what we have now which is, one modern deck wins a big tourni, everyone uses it and ignores the other decks, until the next winner of the big modern touri.
The regional PTQs still have "seasonal" formats, and I imagine they'll be rotated much the same way as now. I expect a lot of stores will run the preliminaries the same format as the regionals, especially when it's a Constructed format.

I don't agree, I live in an area where Modern is the most played format(EDIT: I mean that most of the best players in my area and most stores hosted Modern because everyone likes the format but these stores have been cutting these events because no one is buying packs because no one wants Standard sealed product if youre looking for modern staples.) BUT most stores have cut Modern from their list of events to host more sealed and standard events. Sure, the occasional modern event in a town might attract a sizeable amount of players, but that is rare and once a season. If you were a business would you rather get the same casual crowd that comes in, buys singles and packs, buys entry and plays either Standard and Sealed or would you rather have a spikey guy come in, pay entry and play Modern and leave? You chose the one making the most money and in most cases the first situation is easiest on a business.
Sure, year round modern events are great but they wont be as numerous.
Whats good to note is that theres no legacy allowed. Not that i dont like legacy. But basicly it says "pick a format, eternal, standard, or packs." Which means its still a fair shot to be modern.
Realistically this means even more modern will be played as nythos says. Your still getting the normal ptqs, chances are people trying to get into the ptq will want to play the format the ptq is in. Thus modern ptqs will still fire. With added modern ptq quilifers. More events then.

It's probably area dependent, but in my neck of the woods, we have both. We have regular Standard events on a weekly basis, and we have Modern events every so often for those that are interested. It doesn't have to be either/or. Both can peacefully coexist. It wasn't like we had regular Modern every Friday to begin with; this just gives game shops and TOs incentive to have Modern events during all months of the year. It doesn't have to be a weekly thing. A Modern tournament every 2 months would be awesome, especially if that happened at 2-3 stores in the area. If given the choice between weekly Modern or weekly Standard, the TO is obviously picking Pack Rat. But that's not the choice. The choice is not between anything. It's the ability to have weekly Standard and supplement it with monthly Modern. Most stores don't even have that.
This might also be a good way to develop Modern more locally. No one wants a format forced on them by the Man. Hell, Magic players don't want ANYTHING forced on them by the Man, whether it's bans, new formats, new rules, etc. This gives Modern the chance to grow in a way that Legacy enjoyed in the mid 2000s. It won't just be pushed by Wizards. It won't just be their baby. These changes give it a chance to become everyone's baby.
The key to remember here is that all of this is speculative, both the positives that I gave and the negatives that you gave. And the point in that is that there are two sides to the change. It's easy to just have a kneejerk reaction to this and blast it as the death of Modern. But it's just as easy to think of how this might benefit the format. Both forces are at play.
The regional PTQs still have "seasonal" formats, and I imagine they'll be rotated much the same way as now. I expect a lot of stores will run the preliminaries the same format as the regionals, especially when it's a Constructed format.
I wouldnt be so sure of this. Probably will be a regional thing. If I was a LGS owner, I would run what is going to bring the most to my LGS. I would have rather seen a forced rotation for LGS to run them instead of podunk LGS runs strictly Standard or sealed.
I like the ideas you expressed but my area has experienced less and less support for the format.
There are 4 large LGS's in my area.
1: Is a smaller shop but hosted Modern FNM's regularly for around 8-10 months. He realized that he could not have Modern AND Standard events at his store as every week the Modern players would show up, have around 40 in number and the standard players would come, have around 6 players and no longer able to participate in a sanctioned standard event. Since Modern players never bought packs, he wasn't making money. So he stopped hosting Modern in hopes of getting more standard players to come in so he can make more money.
2: There is a really nice and a rather large store that has hosted Sealed FNMs for the longest time. They occasionally host a Legacy Event during the week/month but I haven't kept track. Now they are hosting Modern FNM which is great because its the only place hosting Modern on a consistent basis and weekly in the area. I was busy with other things this last week but I went 2 weeks ago and around 14-16 modern players turned up which is good. There were still 25+ there playing M15 draft/sealed. But they have Comics, Warhammer, and Magic all being sold there so they are probably able to host Modern without losing any money. They also have one of the largest modern/legacy collections in the area. Need duals and foil fetches? These guys have the best selection.
3: There is a small sized store with the second best selection in the area. They used to host Modern events every month (usually with a box of MM for the first place prize and using store credit/packs for other prizes) but they stopped hosting Modern events completely since they would always lose money or not make as much if someone came in looking to just crack packs.
4: There in a final store with another large selection for Legacy and Standard but hardly any Modern cards. They host sealed/standard for FNM. They host Legacy monthly. When it comes to Modern, it doesn't exist here. I walked in once to pick up some sleeves (they have unbelievable deals on sleeves) and I talked to some of the players and most of them wanted Modern events and even talked to the employees but they didn't wanna host it due to the other stores' experiences with Modern. They just cant make as much money when people aren't opening product.
I would love for them to coexist but all these big stores in the area are cutting modern out. It makes sense to me, if I ran a store id obviously do what is best for business and attracting a good crowd of customers that love standard and sealed. 2 of the stores have hosted PTQs rather recently, 1 being Modern and 1 being Standard. The modern one was good, it got something like 200+ people to come out. But besides entry fees, most of the players bought no product or singles from the stores selling there. Besides entry fees, the stores are making no money from them. With the Standard one, people were scrambling last second to find what they needed, buying packs in between rounds but attendance was around 140-150. Id imagine the standard event made the most money for the store. So if given a choice between hosting Modern, Standard and Sealed, im sure all of the stores here would chose the last 2 despite Modern being the most well liked.
Ive heard nothing but complaints from Modern only players in my area. Most are refusing to switch to standard. A few have stopped playing completely. Some are still going to the Modern FNM at store #2 but because its a newer place and a little harder to get to, it hasn't been as popular as stores #1 and #3.
I wish Modern events made enough money for stores to rely on it but the casual players and standard players buy more packs.

If you run Standard preliminaries for a Modern regional PTQ, people need two decks put together. (I don't think regional PTQ is likely to be high-EV enough to say "I'll put together the deck if I win the preliminary", though granted borrowing may be an option for a lot of people.) If you run them the same format (or Limited) you attract people who only have one or the other. Thus I expect stores will do that.

Makes me wonder where you play. People are going to play what ever format the LGS wants to run to qualify for the PTQ. They could need 4 decks and they would do it.
The LGS are going to run what ever format they feel will make them the most money, period. Some may take into consideration the PTQ 'season' format but not all will.
My question is this. Will more stores be able to run the preliminary PTQs than the amount that were able to run normal PTQs? Because the Pastimes PTQ was in the middle of nowhere and if other Chicago stores like MTGcardmarket and Dice Dojo could get them it would be great.
Well, guess I have less of a ******* chance than I did already...
The main problem I have, coming from an Australasian perspective, is that there's only 3 regional events in the APAC area, and will demand large amounts of travel for most competitors. Assuming that there's going to be one in Australasia, one in South-East Asia and one in/near China, it could demand international travel just to play in a Regional event that won't cover the cost of the flight over there. (Unless you manage to Top-4)
Even if the Regional is on the same coast as I live on, it could potentially be a 15-20 hour drive to get there. (Upsides are it could be in the same state as I'm in, or it could only be a 10-hour drive.)
I just hope it isn't a Draft/Sealed circle-jerk that I think it'd become here, as I don't enjoy either format. (Not particularly fond of Standard either, but at least Standard is less luck-dependent than trying to rip bombs.)

I would have to ask the local TO but I believe they have to have room for a certain amount of players (hence why pasttimes ran theirs in the Odium, its a bigger venue then the store which couldnt handle the 240 players plus everything else that goes on there). I want to say the number is 150, but I would have to ask to be certain.
Also any venue with in Chicago is expensive. You wont be seeing stores going into Chicago renting space very often. Thats why you see more of the PTQ things happening in the burbs.

I understand this. However, it would be nice if they could do it in the north suburbs instead. I am not sure where they would do it, but Villa Park is just so far away from everything.

They are expecting the same or more turn outs for the PTQ qualifiers so I wouldnt think they will be changing it, but maybe.
Yeah, Villa Park is a ways, but they are also trying to give those on the west side of the state a break also. I want to know where the regional PTQs are going ot be held since there are only 31 of them. Now thats going to be a haul unless you get lucky.

Hopefully the changes to PTQs will make them smaller and make it possible for stores to be able to run theirs in smaller areas.

I maintain my right to unreasonably hope.
At the very least they could put it somewhere by the el
If they are in large cities, Chicago is certainly getting one. There has to be one for the central US and if there is then it will probably be in the Chicago area.

The PTQ for central U.S. will probably be in Indy ran by Pasttimes. But that is a guess.

Gratz by the way, you get one close.
No, but I assume that they will be running 2 Modern and 2 Sealed or something similar.
Thanks. Now I just have to see what Dice Dojo is offering.
