Hi, after 6 month I had time to start to rebuild the commander 2017 decks. Vampire Bloodlust is the first one.
Please, help with some tips.
First, of all, some rules for all decks:
1 - No uncondidional tutors alowed, all decks have win game combos (nothing like turn 3-5 combos), free tutors wouldn't be fun.
2 - No ultra ramp like Mana Crypt.
All decks have high cmc, with heavy bombs and board wipes (I think vampire bloodlust is the one with less).
The idea in the deck is make a bunch of creatures, get counters, gain life, drain life and tax opponent creatures. Isn't a aggro vampire deck, those vampire are addicted in blood, they like to eat, they're slow and big.
3,71 avg cmc. All decks will have high cmc, but looks like the problem of this one will be the low ramp (until now)
11 card draws
10 ramp, 4 are land (problem)
20 lifegains
2 remove artifact and enchantment (another problem)
13 creatures removals
14 counters (8 mass counters)
3 grave recover
8 anthem effects
The non vampires are: Archangel of Thune - This is the face of the deck, gain life, counters, to do more damage and gain more life. The card is just stupid with Sanctum Seeker or Blood Artist.
Metallic Mimic isn't a vampire but is, counters are good, probably worth 2 mana
Tymna the Weaver card draw and life link? Yes please. Accept hits for other cards like that.
Vizkopa Guildmage, this isn't a 2 drop, is a finisher. Buuuut, mana sink
The biggest problem to me is mana, the ramp ins't enought, the cmc is high and there is 15 permanents with activated abilities that need mana. Options to add more colored mana?
Some maybeboard considerations: Anguished Unmaking and Council's Judgment would be other options to deal with permanents, creatures aren't the problem, but Enchantment and Artifacts are (none or almost none planeswalkers in the table). Anguished Unmaking probably would be better since I only have 1 instant, lol.
Mana Echoes is a nice ramp, but the colorless don't help here, I need to produce Brw... creatures ramp don't live enought to make difference.
Harvester of Souls could be the best card draw here, but I don't know how to put it in the deck. If I could recover things easier from graveyard (Cauldron of Souls?) would be nice.
Falkenrath Exterminator looks perfect for the deck, but it will fight against dragons, giant cats and wizards... besides Wizards, it need a lot of counters to do something. And Wizards are just ETB effects with bodies that can recover from graveyard.
Serra Ascendant is busted, don't know what to cut. I didn't want to cut a vampire for him.
Zulaport Cutthroat would be another insane card with Archangel of Thune, but another human in the deck.
No Viscera Seer? No Havengul Vampire? Those should be auto-includes, friend(one for sac and deck manipulation, the other due to insane counter ramp). Also, with all this card draw, unless you intend to be very careful, I would recommend utilizing something like Reliquary Tower or Thought Vessel to avoid getting backlash from your own Necropotence.
I would also suggest that Edgar Markov works best with cheap vampires. Dropping bombs isn't bad, but if you need bodies, and you can only draw up bombs that take up most of your mana, you can find yourself in a bad spot. To that end, my suggestions for cuts are:
- Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet is too slow. Assuming he even survives a round to take his shot, all it takes is one intervention of regeneration or indestructability to ruin your plan and his use.
- Butcher of Malakir, I feel, is overkill since you have pact and dictate in this deck. But I can see the value of making people think twice about attacking into chump blocks too.
- Guul Draz Assassin, like most other levelers, are FAR too slow to justify, even as cannon or sac fodder the turn they ETB. Pitch him.
- Necropolis Regent is dangerous in how much you must commit to B. You can have enough mana to cast her but for one more black...I would eyeball her for pitching.
- Vizkopa Guildmage can be easily replaced by Basilisk Collar. Granted, the collar can only be placed on one creature at a time, but with its 2 for 1 package, wouldn't that be enough? Plus, Vault of the Archangel does the same effect for all your dudes...
- Tymna the Weaver is on the list only because I think there are enough vampires that you might want to go straight tribal(a few deviations...Athreos is too good to discount, for example). She may provide good card draw, but you're playing black too...card draw should rarely be an issue.
- Cover of Darkness is nice, but the menace effect you'll get from Iroas will often be enough, especially with your deathtouchers. YMMV depending on your playgroup, though.
- Crypt of Agadeem should also be on your watch list, given your concerns about Vampire Nocturnus(valid concern, btw); perhaps even moreso, as it relies on a full graveyard of black critters.
To answer your maybeboard questions:
Anguished Unmaking is a great choice. The life loss would be negligibla(especially in a lifegain deck), and exiling is always worthwhile. Consider TIE fighters as well. EDIT: Utter End would help in the instant category if you prefer.
The only comparison to Mana Echoes that I can think of is Braid of Fire, but I don't know if you need other colors as well or not. Ah,
I forgot; Phyrexian Altar may be another option(if you can afford it).
I would prefer to use Living Death over Rise of the Dark Realms, personally. While the obvious alpha strike is euphoric, played right(i.e., with a sac outlet of your own), Living Death is a one-sided boardwipe. Creatures may not be a concern, but it feels just as euphoric to have the only (threatening) creatures on the board either.
Harvester of Souls would work well with just single use sac effects, given that you will be popping tokens or saccing. Cauldron would just make him more bonkers(that's not to say it wouldn't be a good plan for it). Wraths are where you see some serious value, though.
I've pointed out the concerns about Nocturnus and Agadeem earlier...most people say this(a deck run by Edgar, Licia, or Mathas) is not the deck for him, and I tend to agree. I would say that Iroas should provide the evasion you need for SOMETHING to get through.
The exterminator would not be an easy critter to fit in; you either play him early by ramping into him(thus swinging for counters before your opponents have a defense up), or you play him late with a huge counter engine so he only needs one or two swings(maybe none). If you do use him, he should always have Blade of the Bloodchief on, which leads into the next point(out of order, I know)...
Blade of the Bloodchief can't get enough 'yes'. You ABSOLUTELY want to play it in a deck that focuses on vampires. End of that point.
Serra Ascendant is too busted, IMO. You either run away with the game and paint a huge target on yourself for the rest of the night, or it doesn't show up soon enough to make a difference. Without tutors, I wouldn't justify it.
Reconnaissance can be good if you use it on creatures that only need the attack trigger, not necessarily the damage(Edgar is one such example). It may be worth looking at if someone focuses on blocking and killing the right creatures.
Divinity of Pride doesn't add anything, as you say, though more lifelink isn't wrong, and having a better chance of it ETBing as a 8/8 isn't bad. Still, I can't find a place for it in my Markov deck either, so you're probably right to just toss it aside.
I totaly forgot Viscera Seer, this is a great 1 drop. and with Butcher of Malakir, pact and dictate, is even better. Viscera Seer is better than Guul Draz Assassin in the deck for one mana, but I'll give Guul Draz Assassin a chance since it is 2 body for 1 mana. Havengul Vampire is nice, but it doesn't have evasion, lifelink, kill things, isn't black and the 4 cmc space have some of the best creatures in the deck. But may put it in the sideboard, worth try it.
You're 100% right about Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet, damn it is slow, cut number 1. Funny how sometimes we can't see the obvious.
Need to try Necropolis Regent, doubling creatures power after a hit is way too good to pass.
Vizkopa Guildmage isn't in the deck because his first ability. It is because of the second ability. 10 life gained with 6 open mana means 20 damage in each opponent. Is sanguine bond number 2, easily to remove, but you can multiply the effect for mana.
Tymna the Weaver probably will be a cut if I get more card draw, for sure. It probably will not live to draw enought cards to worth it. Harvester of Souls cost the double, but with Viscera Seer and othe sacs, worth 10x more. Probably will put him instead of Kalitas and Visera instead Tymna.
Cover of Darkness is waaaay to good here. In that deck, is better than Ionas. The deck will play against cats, 0 artifacts/black creatures, Wizards probably 5 artifacts/black creatures, and dragons, maybe 5-10 artifacts/black creatures. Unblockable is better than menace, is black and cost 2 manas..
Crypt of Agadeem doesn't look a problem, 32 of 38 creatures are black, and it can add B even without creatures in graveyard.
Good call about Phyrexian Altar, I already have it. But probably would work better with a lower curve or more graveyard recursion.
Living Death is great, but I only own one, and is in Wizard deck. Wizard can put way more creatures in the graveyard and has some great ETB. Dragons could had Living Death too, since dragons are big and the deck has many options do give haste to all creatures. Vampires don't have so many ETB or haste, so Living Death would be underwhelming for vampires in that table.
I Agree in all your points about the rest of the maybeboard. I'll change something soon. Thanks!
I totaly forgot Viscera Seer, this is a great 1 drop. and with Butcher of Malakir, pact and dictate, is even better. Viscera Seer is better than Guul Draz Assassin in the deck for one mana, but I'll give Guul Draz Assassin a chance since it is 2 body for 1 mana.
...

Don't feel bad about missing Viscera Seer. Being a common vampire, he's quite frequently overlooked for the bombs, such as Kalitas 1.0. Then, experience or a mentor tells you what the real deal is, and...:) But yeah, we've all done it.
I can acknowledge wanting to try Necropolis Regent. When it happens, it's great...but it's also scary to the rest of the table, which can have a backlash too. Still, like Palpatine says, "Do it!".
As for Vizkopa Guildmage, I don't know WHY I keep thinking its second ability is "Target creature gets deathtouch". >.< Anyway, I see where you're going with this, so how about this for your mana sink problem, and getting more mileage out of the Viz-gal; Exsanguinate. Another to consider is Debt to the Deathless. Whichever one floats your boat. Or be greedy and do both.
Removed:
1x Butcher of Malakir - Slooow. Is nice to have another copy of Grave Pact, but you need this before 7 manas. Better add some card draw instead.
1x Guul Draz Assassin - I can see this being good in an fast aggro, sometime you neeed to do things with your mana... here is just 2 1/1 for, and this isn't enought
1x Iroas, God of Victory - The card is good, but to be true, Grave Pact,Dark Prophecy,Harvester of Souls, Dictate of Erebos made a better evasion work, lol. Most of the time, many times, I don't even care if my creature die.
1x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet - slooooooooooow
1x Tymna the Weaver - I think Grim Haruspex would make a better card draw job here... I'll test that one.
1x Strip Mine - I care more to produce colored mana than destroy lands... lose a land isn't good for that deck either
1x Legion's Landing - This card is basicly an extra land in a low curve Edgar. Here is a waste of time until a point that you don't care for one extra W.
Added:
1x Viscera Seer - How I forgot this??? Viscera is stupid
1x Harvester of Souls - Now, that's a fun card draw
1x Sacred Foundry - colored mana is important
1x Windswept Heath - colored mana is important
1x Cauldron of Souls - This card is just way too fun, lol.
1x Grim Haruspex - draw cards is what move the world. Let's see if this one can make enought draws... if not, I probably will put a Council's Judgment here, you know, removals.
1x Mana Echoes - Colorless mana is important too. In fact, the deck really shine when you can ramp and draw cards, which deck don't? If I draw enought cards, I need things like Mana Echoes to put half of my hand in the table.

Mana Echoes is a nice ramp, but the colorless don't help here, I need to produce Brw... creatures ramp don't live enought to make difference.
Talisman of Indulgence is probably highly necessary, I don't know what to cut.
Cauldron of Souls is the number one sideboard I want to try, with all those +1/+1, recurrent vampires would be awesome, the ETB ones and food for sac.
Rise of the Dark Realms is always busted, don't need to say anything.
Harvester of Souls could be the best card draw here, but I don't know how to put it in the deck. If I could recover things easier from graveyard (Cauldron of Souls?) would be nice.
Vampire Nocturnus, I don't know... 43 cards are black, so, most of the time, vampires wouldn't get the bonus. The only library manipulation is Volrath's Stronghold... This worth more than Iroas, God of Victory?
Falkenrath Exterminator looks perfect for the deck, but it will fight against dragons, giant cats and wizards... besides Wizards, it need a lot of counters to do something. And Wizards are just ETB effects with bodies that can recover from graveyard.
Serra Ascendant is busted, don't know what to cut. I didn't want to cut a vampire for him.
Zulaport Cutthroat would be another insane card with Archangel of Thune, but another human in the deck.
Blade of the Bloodchief worth it? I had a very nice result in the precon with it.
Reconnaissance is nice to protection, but creatures need to cause damage in this deck.
Divinity of Pride is busted by itself, isn't a vampire and don't and things to the rest of the team, like Anchangel do. Probably wouldn't use it.
Colorless lands don't help too, probably I'll need to change some lands.
I would also suggest that Edgar Markov works best with cheap vampires. Dropping bombs isn't bad, but if you need bodies, and you can only draw up bombs that take up most of your mana, you can find yourself in a bad spot. To that end, my suggestions for cuts are:

Consider Sulfurous Springs before Talisman of Indulgence, or even Boros Signet.
Can't argue with the cauldron.
