so the most obvious way to go with urza is to make it a voltron deck, right? obviously.
The plan:
1. ramp with mana rocks
2. plopp urza down.
3. chuck some equipment onto the field, tapping them for U to equip and/or activate urza's 5 to land more mana rocks/equipment
4. swing in.
5. win.
So this is probably going to play quite unlike most blue decks, since we don't wanna run cards that will whiff off urza's 5 ability. We also want things that makes urza bigger, protected, and a total beast. so that means:
1. no counterspells and other timing-restricted cards.
2. equipment that gives haste, shroud, hex proof, +x/+x, and has a low equip cost.
3. somewhat limited number of cantrips/draw spells.
So that being said, does anyone have any better ideas of what sort of cards ill need to throw down to make this work?
The biggest bummer of all this is you can't play cranial plating.
Equipment voltron when the equipment tap for mana really does take the edge off.
Probably the most obvious piece of huge tech is Strata Scythe.
Nice thing is you almost don't need to bother with protection as you can just play some cheap countermagic and use all the artifacts to recast him if someone kills him.
A potentially fun approach might be to make him an artifact and put modular stuff on him. I'm unsure if there are enough good ways to do that consistently though. lattice is surely playable in the deck esp. if you use Rebuild and Hurkyl's Recall for hilarious blowouts. And also there's liquimetal coating of course.
Modular stuff on urza? how did you mean? as in using liquimetal coating to make urza an artifact creature when modular guys die to put more +1/+1 counters on him?
The thing i actually wanted to use most in this deck (and can't) is bludgeon brawl. That would be awesome. urza carrying swords of x and y, and a darksteel ingot, and a Lion's eye diamond!
Notice also that LED doesn't tap sac to net 3 mana, so LED actually gives us UUUU when cracked. seems good.
Unless urza is getting killed on our turn, it's not really possible to float mana with urza's ability to recast him. But it's a good line of play that i probably wouldn't see!
I would expect instant speed removal in response to equips to be a common time for people to try to remove him, especially if that equipment protects him somehow. Swords for example. But yes no resilience to wraths.
That is unless you have a flash enabler which orrery at least is likely worth running, and teferi.
LED seems alright but I'm not sure.
Swords definitely seem good.
Yar, I was thinking cute would be stuff like a arcbound dudes, hangarback, mayne pentavus type stuff. It would probably take some doing to set up but with trinket and tribute mage you get a lot of help. Trophy is great too.
Nice thing is hangarback and all the thopter making nonsense is great w urza.
oh wow... i never even considered the clue tokens. and tap isn't part of the activation, so you can tap for blue, then pay to sac it to draw!
I also realised that howling mine lets me draw in upkeep (after untap), then tap for U to deny other people's draws.
I'm not sure if paradox engine is a good idea. seems to possibly break the deck (which is not the point of it), but seems silly not to add it in.

am i missing some obviously good equipment that'd work with urza?

I'd consider confirm suspicions too.
