Ok, booster boxes of Avacyn Restored are selling, on average, at $104-$109 at most of the online retailers. What's up with that? That is about $15 more than any other set during the week or two prior to release. I mean if you read these forums everybody hates this set (don't get me started on all the people who post they think a set sucks before they've even played it). What is going on?
Maybe because Miracle is so new people don't know how to evaluate it properly so they just want to get their hands on Miracle cards for pet decks? Or maybe this is EDH.set and people are willing to pay more to get stuff as soon as possible?
Who knows.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
It's still preorder season until Friday. Speculation is hotter than ever, and everyone wants to see their pet cards triple in value. Retailers are taking advantage of the hype more and more each set since Jace and are cashing in.
Spoiler alert!
People will be disappointed when the dust settles and their $15-$25 chase cards find a home at the $5-$15 lounge.
Normally a box will cost me 110, and it went up to 116, it's possible Wizards up the cost themselves.
That sounds good except I price checked it three weeks ago and I could get it for under $100 at an online store I use. It is now $115 at the same store.
The set is proving to be popular so the stores are raising prices to increase profits.
I hope that after it is out a few weeks they will come back down.

Is WOTC limiting how much AVR is going out to a point of stranglehold again? I know with INN and DKA, my LGS's couldn't get enough in to host weekly drafts for only about 12 people until about a month after release... I really hope WOTC starts upping the production, ESPECIALLY with RTR coming out this fall.
Hopefully my LGS sticks with $100 out the door for AVR like they have for the last few sets. They raise the price a few bucks after a month or so, but the last few sets have been. I'll find out after my exam tomorrow morning.
Right now, there is a shortage of AVR. I asked my LGS last night about the price increase and that was the reason right now. He's currently only on his first wave of cases while some stores have had to recieve a third wave of product.
step three: Wonder why wizards doesn't prevent wholesalers from selling at 5-10% above cost which hurts brick and mortar stores like no other.
step four: profit?
step five: Sell your paper collection at a huge loss since your only local store just closed.
step six: Enjoy the "community" of MTGO!
So I should drive 20 miles each way to buy from my "local" brick and mortar store? The one that has a custom EDH ban list that precludes me from running half of my decks?
No thanks.

if you buy the new stuff and then win FNM that very night you could say you off set with your winnings the extra cash you dropped to get the new stuff early.

If you have to drive 20 miles an live in anyplace with more people than death valley the wholesalers/wizards have already killed your local store/s.

I support my LGS. I always buy a box there and I play FNM most every week. I purchase all of my game supplies there as well. It gets plenty of my monetary support.

How the heck do you allege "wizards" are responsible for killing local stores? I am positive many a local game/comic stores are only still in business because of MtG.
My box is going to be around 105 to 115. The manager there told me they have to charge more because there is a higher demand than Dark Ascension. If may be a bull crap reason, but I still like to support my local that likes to offer me a place to play [and the occasional free tournament, like on May 12 and 15] rather than support an online store that offers me nothing more than a good value.
You know, I know it is more expensive than buying online, but I like to support my local. Buying cheaper is why we...I am going to snip that conversation.
Huh. The store I work at has no problem at all getting AVR, and we got a LOT. Maybe so much got preordered that a lot of the stores that typically sell cheap boxes instead are cracking them?

Wizards has every ability to mandate that people they supply boxes to either sell for MSRP or ensure that who they distribute to do the same (for the duration the set is in standard) or be banned from ordering from them. My experience with magic shops is that players spend nearly half of their money on packs, and losing those sales or being forces to sell cheap is often the difference between staying open, running a charity or closing.
It also drives down the price of singles making secondary sales less profitable, especially when cracking packs to sell the singles.
the vast majority of players got their strong attachment to the game at local stores that specialize in MTG. A little help to them is not uncalled for as most of them make very little profit to pay for the time of partners, employees and operators as things have been for the last 15 years.

Well Im sorry if they're that oppressive but I certainly see their side of it. My shop had a similar list which I lobbied to add to it myself fairly often.(no one wanted to play against easy win combos. Time Stretch ect) No one was forced to abide by the list if they didn't want to of course, but most people were happy with it more or less and tended to use it. We often did have groups form wit a different perspective and they used their own rules. That's typical of how casual magic works.

We had a local store that was being funded by the owner. He was making a net loss each quarter and having to keep the place open by having a second job. Wizards did nothing to support him, instead they started stripping his store of privileges because he wasn't making enough sales. Instead of trying to breath new life into those stores. After a couple months of this he was stripped of his ability to sanction events and the player rewards got canceled so people just quit coming and started driving 30mins to stores who had a prize payout instead. So, YES I blame wizards for not giving people a reason to play locally instead of online or where the money is.

No offense to whoever that store owner may be, but if he was running a net loss each quarter, he probably wasnt doing something right. It is not Wizard's job to hold every store owners hand in how to run their business. I doubt him having to close down had anything to do with how Wizards runs their company, or what they charge him for boxes or anything like that.

The supply of Avacyn Restored booster boxes is not enough to meet demand of people willing to buy Avacyn Restored booster boxes. Therefore, the price goes up in an effort to reduce demand to match supply.
No idea whether the shortage is caused by Wizards (for not printing enough) or by John Q. Public (for demanding more than usual).
My LGS sucks. They really don't care about the Magic community. They stay afloat because of the other games and numerous times they have shafted MTG players because they just don't care. I, for one, am more than willing to not support a store who doesn't support me.

Supply and demand. This set is a lot more popular than Dark Ascension, so naturally stores are selling out and raising the prices of boxes. Plus stores are allocated a certain amount of boxes through distributors, and it could be that a majority of stores didn't set high enough numbers for pre-order and are running out. The store I work at got 240 boxes of Avacyn for pre-orders and we're almost sold out. Compared to Dark Ascension were we only had about 140 box pre-orders.
