You know the drill. Feel free to discuss in this thread, though keep guesses/answers in spoiler tags please!
(You have ideas that you want to keep hidden? Somehow I'm thinking that you've already got the two 14-letter answers but don't want to share them yet...)
STIRS UP: anagram of 'purists' meaning "to cause trouble"
AURORA ILLUMINA, you mad egotist
More specifically, I sort-of anagrammed 'uproar' for 'auror' then noticed the pattern (6,8). Then metagamed my way to certainty
Still working on how exactly to get there from the clue though.
Ah:
For first half: 'left about' gives A, then sorta-anagram 'uproar' -> AURORA
For second half: 'almost semi-illusory name' -> ILLUMINA
And of course the clue describes the author in a couple senses ("soul", "illusory", "name on paper").
And this has something to do with the other 14-character clue certainly.
Bump, with a notice.
There doesn't seem to be much activity here for a few days, and only two people have posted answers in this thread so far. Maybe I made it too hard? If there's no activity in this thread for another 24 hours, I'll probably post the quick version on my page. (I have made a few slight deviations from Ximenian standards, but there shouldn't be anything that makes it impossible to solve...)
No... I was referring to a specific Italian island, by English name.
PS. After thinking about it, I'm not sure that A3-down should have the !. I'll change that to a "!?", which isn't standard notation in a cryptic crossword, but I'll put it there to be different; there's a bit of logic to the clue as being taken as an "& lit." clue, but it's not something you'd think of immediately.
