This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, Squandered Resources: Super Budget Super Series 1. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?
Abundant Growth is a little misleading. The card does not actually create a mana ramp, it merely creates mana fixing. Utopia Sprawl is still better in this deck.
I think the Transmuter deck can use Sphinx Summoner and a few Drowned catacombs to reliably abuse the summoner's fetching of your 1 of silver bullets
Also Sundering Titan says hi
Almost forgot Grim Poppet was also a fun card to abuse when I played with transmuter
the summoner was considered, but I took him out at the last second. As were Drowned catacombs, but they are kind of expensive so i made the deck stictly mono-blue. once you start adding additional colors the decks get much more pricey. I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend on the deck.
Yes, I probably should have included the titan, seems strange that I did not. Maybe I had him but took him out long ago? Not sure.
Haha great job! Very fun decks for me to introduce new players to. I think that super budget decks provide great ideas to build upon, but aren't comp ready.
Perhaps a single line summary of how to improve the decks would be a great addition.
By the way, I have a wicked idea for a competitive legacy budget deck, will send you PM to not embarass myself haha
Have you tested the contamination deck? It looks really interesting and fun but is it more casual or competitive.
Did you test the zombies BB package instead or maybe did that put it over 100?
I have tested the contamination deck. It is actually pretty darn powerful. Of course, putting more money into it makes it better, but the deck can certainly hold it's own in the creature based meta we have today. Hymn to tourach, duress and innocent blood just get there. I never did test the BB zombie package, but part of that is because, yes, it made the deck a little too expensive.
Can we consider Endless Wurm for the first deck (aura gnarly)? Combos well with rancor. I have three, so might as well. Also, removal spells can be placed on the SB...
I've always had a fascination for Legacy, although this is the first time I'm going to build one.
Good stuff. I cut my Magic teeth on Vintage and legacy, most of it just watching people play. Black has always been a color I liked, and Pox was a deck I've always wanted to try. Looking forward to trying this out... It will probably be the first time I've played a deck composed entirely of cards I really like.
I just had to post here. I think your articles are ultra-uber-mega awesome. Im a Legacy player for 8 years now, and i must say, this is the kind of thing that we just NEED to make friends get into the game.
Most people that wants their friends to play magic with them, just trow a bunch of cards with the same color or 2 colors with lands to them and start playing but get stomped sooner or later and its chaos everywhere. This decks help that , giving new players options to test the game with relatively powerfull decks at low cost, and giving experienced players a bit of variety to play more than the Tipical-Boring-Metagame around you.
Who doesnt like to win , and say "u know that my deck cost the same as one card in your deck?, and its not even the pricey ones..."
Also, just giving a bit of feedback, you should try to do this Budget series with Tribal decks, people just love tribal decks. For example, 3-5 Elf decks with price ranges bellow 150$, idem with Zombies, Goblins, Faeries(rogues), and whatnot. That will be even more entertaining to new players.

Thanks for the ideas, idea guy spooky!
You can certainly try. He is kind of anti-synergistic, as he makes your other fatties smaller through time, but a 9/9 is nothing to scoff at.
You are very welcome for the ideas, love the fact that you like my writings!

Sweet! That deck is getting a lot of attention from a lot of people. Tell me how it works for you! Glad I could help you!

Keep up the good work!
I have actually seriously considered putting together a tribal themed article. I have 2-3 more in the works, but after those come out, well who knows?
It's great to hear that you appreciate what I'm doing. I really appreciate it myself. It keeps me going. =)

What's BB Zombie?
Also, what do you suggest to change if budget allows it?
Also, what do you suggest to change if budget allows it?
1st Question:
Gravecrawler being able to recur itself if more zombies are in the graveyard. This can be achived through buried alive and similar cards. Also the dredging of Dakmore Salvage
2nd:
Liliana of the veil is always a good start. Including 2-3 would be strong. Also, many would say to include wasteland and/or sinkhole but this deck is different from other pox decks in the sense that its mana denial is not in the form of destruction, but in transformation. It is because of this that those cards really are not needed, in my opinion at least. Instead, I feel that a white splash would be much more beneficial. Fetch lands and Scrublands would give your the mana you need. Enlightened tutor would be able to find either contamination or bitterblossom. White also opens the deck up to removal spells like Swords to plowshares and vindicate.
With gravecrawler you get one in play and buried alive the rest. This gives you multiples. One for sacking the rest provide a clock.
Intuition is also an option in that sense.
As far as contamination destroying your own white splash, it doesnt really matter. As long as your actual win conditions are not white being able to use enlightened tutor before contamination hits is pretty powerful. Once it does you may have dead draws, but your opponent is locked out of the game entirely.
That being said, you could also just go the traditional pox route.
No sideboards for the decks? I thought they would be tournament viable. Thanks for nice ideas anyhow!
I have touched on in past articles, but I guess i can't assume people have read everything I have done. I don't like providing sideboards because such things should be constructed based on one's own personal meta. Despite what the high end tournaments would hint at, the actual meta of legacy is drastically different everywhere you go. If I give a sideboard for one meta and someone copies it and walks into another meta then it just doesn't work out. That's my justification at least.
Beyond all that, I'm glad you enjoyed the article!
It is a great series of articles, and one thing I enjoy most is that they don't come with any suggestions for how to increase their potency by adding more expensive cards. The decks stand complete and aloof. Such things should be left to the reader.
I find this feature of the articles quite tasteful.

Well thank you! I have actually had quite a few people tell me that I should include a sort of "how you can improve this deck with more money" feature. It's nice to hear from someone who doesn't think that.
It's not generally that hard to improve a deck if one is willing to put up the cold, hard cash to do so. Especially not in the age of the Internet. Maybe way back when decklists and deckbuilding were the closely guarded secrets of a few people, that would have been warranted.
Today though, I find the value of these articles and decklists twofold: to keep me in fun decks to play for variety's sake, and for helping other players get into Legacy. No one's going to enter the format eager to drop the several hundred dollars for the most accessible established decks. Even if they were, they'd mostly be playing Dredge, and an asymmetrical deck that everyone packs hate for is not precisely the place a beginner is going to feel comfortable.
Besides, creating a budget list and creating an easily upgradeable list are two different problems.
If I might be so bold as to make a request, it would be cool to have a Squandered Resources for each mono color, or one that featured a gauntlet of all the budget Green decks, or actually some kind of budget deck competition in general. Perhaps a Budget vs. Maverick, or Budget vs. any particular dominant deck would be wonderful to read.
Just took the Aura Gnarly for a spin, and discovered how hard things are to remove. At first I had my doubts of its competitiveness, but then realised that although I can dismember a Baneslayer, I can't handle a 1/1 Ledgewalker with two Rancors.
Btw, I proxied some Argothian Enchantresses for funsies to improve the deck
Ha ha. Yup, thats what makes the deck strong. All the removal in the world doesnt matter if silhana gets pumped or aura gnarlid gets enchanted with a canopy cover. Glad you like the deck. Its looking pretty likely that i will take it to the detroit scg legacy trial saturday( not the open on sunday though, have to represent dream halls). Should be fun.
Yes, argothian would be strictly better than verduran. I'm sure it makes the deck that much stronger.

Nah, the ramp is better than unnecessary colorfixing.

Magic players have made it abundantly clear that their time is worth $0/hour in their opinion, so no sympathy there. -DR jeebus or something

I was honestly thinking more in the lines of thoughtseize, Cabal Therapy, etc.
Those are both good choices.
