This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, Squandered Resources: Super Budget Super Series 2. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Aura Combo looks pretty baller, might have to try to adapt it to Modern, as it'd be ridiculous in that format, and we'd only have to pitch a few banned cards out of the board.
Possibly replace Vapor Snag with Unsummon if you're predominantly using it to protect your Researchers?

Yeah, I never even thought about how pretty much the whole combo is legal in modern, save for the Mythic Proportions. Let me know how that goes, I am very interested in what a modern version would look like.
I think that if you are asking what vapor snag is most used for I would say it would be for protecting yourself long enough for the combo to come online.
Ive been playing the blue cephalid deck casually ever since I saw the win condition posted somewhere (perhaps by you?) its quite fun and very cheap to slap together.
A few of your decks are basically modern decks btw. I would suggest maybe highlighting the few changes to make them modern legal for people in case they are interested.
I am a big fan of mono-green tron. I have always been a big fan of fatties. Unfortunately I was on a mtg hiatus during the eldrazi block. Anyway, I was looking into making this deck modern legal. The culprits from keeping it legal are Moments Peace, crop rotation and wall of roots. (I think that's it). Are there any good replacements in modern. I know they're not perfect but I was thinking expedition map for the crop rotation, Carven Caryatid or Vine Trellis for Wall of Blossoms. I'm not sure for moments peace replacement. Any ideas of comments?

Wall of roots was time shifted in time spiral so you should be able to use it in anycase, expedition map would be a good choice as a slower crop rotation.
It's my understanding that green urza-tron is already an established archetype in modern. Am I wrong?

Yes it is in modern, however, I thought the idea was to keep it on a budget. I have test played this deck and I really enjoy it. I know if I had more $ I would enjoy it even more. But this deck is just as good. Thank you.

If I were to make it modern, it would probably look like this. Note that this is very rough, as I don't currently play modern. I don't know how effective the other cantrips are, or if Spell peirce is where we want to be as far as counters go.
That's almost the same as my list, apart from I used gigantiform as opposed to celestial mantle. Haha
I looked at that, as well as Epic Proportions, but to me celestial mantle can just make the game get out of hand so fast. gigantiform may be better for actually finishing the game, but I felt like mantle just made it so after a bit there was no way for your opponent to come back from the life difference. I could be wrong though, as i have not actually tested it.
Careful Study digs deeper, which I think is more useful than the Researcher. If anything, Hapless Researcher could be used as an even more budget Azami. They both have the same function in the deck (get revived by the Angel and draw the last card).
If I might put in a small request, and by the way I LOVE the articles, for a variation upon them.
Sometimes a very mainstream deck has a few cards that can be excluded, making the result (while not quite budget) fairly accessible. An example of what I mean is The Epic Storm. The current mana base is pricey. Yet not so long ago, the deck ran on just rainbow lands, priced far more aggressively than duals.
It would be pretty cool for an article noting other occurrences of that, as well as certain more expensive cards (like Wasteland or Lion's Eye Diamond) that can be used in several decks that could be called budget except for this one card.
I sometimes find myself in possession of a few expensive cards and willing to make a new deck with them, but not willing to put cash into anything too rich at the moment.
Sort of a guide to improving decks and getting into different ones, how to build a collection type stuff, with the stated goal being to own as few as cards as possible that aren't in decks.
Budget lists are great, don't get me wrong, but a few words to the wise on how to grow a collection without wasting money would be appreciated.
Why not running Zur the enchanter? At 4 mana this guy is a beast!!! But if you do you may have to adjust your mana base.
In what deck? He is a triple color costing creature, which is very difficult to do in a budget deck. 2 colors is bad enough on the wallet. I won't deny that he is good, but I doubt he is viable on a budget.
@MoxBropal-
I really doubt it. It's harder to cast than you think. I can't see it being anything more than a dead card in your hand that you can almost cast.
@Lormador-
I could probably dedicate and article to something like that, but it wouldn't fit in every article I write.
I was looking over the modern thread for this deck, and Aura Finesse seemed like a very powerful interaction for this deck, specifically the ability to move an aura off the researchers and onto one of the hexproofs. Would it be worth subbing in a miser's copy for the drake? More to the point, is it powerful enough to try to make it a two of? I haven't had a chance to sleeve this up and try it, but it looks like a solid way to try and break into legacy and/or modern on a budget.
One final question, for someone new to looking at eternal formats, what should I be looking at when building a sideboard for this? As a combo deck, is it just too tight to bother sideboarding? I honestly can't see much that can stand to go from the list, it looks like the sort of deck that just does what it does, and wins or looses on the strength of the combo. Thanks in advance for those of you who answer my nub questions.
The card is interesting, but it does nothing to move the deck forward. It does nothing by itself and is not a combo piece. you can do some cool things with it sure, but I really don't think the deck can sacrifice slots to it.
As far as building a sideboard goes, you need to know what you meta is like and what you have trouble with. Sideboards for combo decks of this nature usually contain hate for graveyard based decks, faster combo decks and blue decks. For reference only, since you meta will most likely be different from ours, this is the sideboard my buddy used.
There is not a single deck that is "too tight for sideboarding." Every deck in the format can benefit from a sideboard. What you have to know going into a match is what cards are least powerful in what matchups and use that knowledge to know what comes in and what comes out in a given match.
That makes sense, thanks for the reply. As for "my meta" legacy really isn't much of a thing around here. There are very occasional tournaments, but not enough for the meta to evolve much locally as far as I know. Of course, I don't currently play any eternal formats, so I could be way off. Live and learn I guess.
Sounds good and good luck! one thing I can recommend to you based on that list is the use of ponder over preordain. Ponder is better, especially in combo decks that search for specific cards, because it sees deeper initially, potentially sees a 4th card and shuffles your library. Preordain is a very good card, but when you put the 2 next to each other it just doesnt stand up quite as high. The shuffle of ponder is also very important considering you are running brainstorm and no fetchlands. I know brainstorm is there to get rid of combo pieces that need to end up in the graveyard so it is ok to keep it. that being said, brainstorm is a much worse card when you can't shuffle away the junk that you put back. add in a ponder though, and things start to look better.
Good luck at the tournament and let us all know how you do!

While R/G seems to be more prevelant, I see no reason as to why mono green would not be.
