Now I watched some of the World Cup last year, and I have to say I'm kind of confused on this whole "groups" situation. Can someone explain how this works to me (put simply)?
First of all, you definitely didn't watch the World Cup, unless it was some kind of replay or something. World Cups are only every four years, so the last one was in 2006.
The group system is very simple, really. The 32 teams are spread semi-randomly into eight groups of four, and in each group every team will play the other teams in the group once (so three games for each team in the group stage). The best two teams from each group after three games advance to the best-of-sixteen playoffs, and the winner of those advance to the quarterfinals, and then to the semis, and then the winners play in the finals (and the losers of the semis play in the 3rd place playoff).
Hmm I suppose it must've been old footage. All I remember was that Brazil was playing and doing pretty good. So are the quarter/semi's single elimination?
Also, what channel( s ) are these on, and is there somewhere I can find a schedule?
In an eight player game, is anything good? Don't you just sit there countering combos until someone genesis waves for 42 after all the blue players tap out fighting over a bribery?

Quarterfinals and semifinals are per definition single elimination.
Channels? I haven't the slightest idea, since you can be anywhere in the world. For schedule, I guess Google is your friend
how about in 3D ? anyone else curious as too how that will work?
Tell me about it! We had a 3D TV Company make a presentation in the company I work in about a month ago, and I couldn't help but wonder what would a World Cup match look like in 3D. My guess is it won't work so well this time, but chances are this technology will be a lot more developed come 2014.
Im sooooooooo thankful to have something to help bridge the gap between the end of hockey season and the beginning of football season this year. Love the World Cup and international tournaments of its likeness. Im taking Spain to beat the Dutch in the Finals. The US makes it out of pool play but goes no firther than that.
I'm currently hoping some of the injured big stars (Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben) can make it. It just won't be as amazing a spectacle without some of them.
Also, seeing how this is the first African WC, I'd really like to see an African side do well, and Ivory Coast seems like the best candidate. Without Drogba, however, I'd say their chances are very limited, especially in such a tough group.
I believe Ghana will do the best out of the African sides, just like last time. Though they don't have Appiah, they still have a strong side, and the group isn't too tough.
Still, their chances are probably the best of all African sides, especially because they got a relatively easy group. I still like Ivory Coast better, but they'll have a considerably tougher time getting past group stage.
By the way, the opening ceremony happens in just a few hours. Can't wait!

With Essien out Ghana's chances are probably blown. They are a solid second, but are behind two teams tied for first as far as "best chances for african teams" go. Ivory Coast is obviously the most talented and skilled team, and has the best african player, but they have a terrible pool. Without Essien, Ghana falls below Cameroon, who has striker Samuel E'to, and also plays in a somewhat weak group. I expect E'to to be to this World Cup what Essien was to the last one, and Cameroon to be to this one what Ghana was to the last.

Who's looking forward to the biggy tomorrow night?
I sense a bit of hostility on these here boards
I picked England to win in my pick'em game (hey, 50 bucks is on the line, I can't be hanging my hat on national pride). I want us to win the whole thing obviously (shout outs to whichever african team can reach the next round though, I'm rooting for them), but I think you guys have a vastly superior team to ours.

The only call I'm not really happy about in the SA game was the one where the Mexican player pulled down the SA player in the box, and the the ref didn't call anything. That being said, the ref definitely could not of had any view of it because the Mexican player obstructed it with his body, so I really can't blame him.

I have to say after reading this, I have to give a bit more respect to Soccer refs. The job seems very demanding.
