Nothing ever happens. I can't imagine actually sitting down and watching an entire match. In the words of Stephen Colbert, they hold the world cup every 4 years because thats how often someone scores a goal.
I had never really given soccer a chance in the past couple years, so I was actually pretty pumped for today... then after they had kicked the ball up and down the HUGE field about 200 times without anything happening I realized why I hadn't given it another chance for so long.

Fair enough, not all sport is for everyone. I really cant stand watching baseball, its too boring and cricket. God that game bores me.

Yeah, I don't like baseball either. Honestly, I'm not that huge of a sports fan. I can only watch a full game of something if I am reading a book or have my laptop with me at the same time (or if I'm with friends). Also, I've never had the desire to actually get really into a sport and learn everyones name and everything... I'm pretty ignorant in most sports discussions. I'd rather talk about what I heard on NPR earlier that day.
I have to completely agree with you. I really don't understand how most Americans say that soccer is too slow of a game and that nothing ever happens. I referee U-9 through High School, and I have to admit, even watching 9 year old girls play soccer is more entertaining than watching baseball.
Now I am really hoping that Algeria and Slovenia draw tomorrow morning. It will make everything so much nicer statistics wise. That and it will allow the US to have a much better chance of still making it to the next round if we lose a game.

Agreed, but better chance for England in my case.

After of watch the first 5 matches i have some opinions, First of all if RSA qualifies is due to political situation
2 - Mexico is the best team of Group A
3 - The next match of RSA against France is pretty balanced (cuz France sux atm)
4 - Mexico VS uruguay is going to be a rough game, wait for lots of free kicks, nasty plays and yellow cards
5 - Argentina is going to qualify as first of Group B (OrlY?)
6 - USA team is awful (the only descent player is the goalkeeper)
7 - Landon Donovan is Overrated
8 - the draw beetwen England and USA was the best result for USA and an Epic Fail for england.
9 - the Greek team is weak i dont think they can handle Nigeria or Argentina
10 - The Key Match is South Korea VS Nigeria and the more interesting in group B an Group A
Extra: i Cheer For Spain and Mexico this world if Mexico wins the world cup (lol) im going to run naked on the streets (sorry world you going to loose the spectacle of see me naked, cuz mexico is not going to win
I agreed wholeheartedly with the people saying that Soccer is better than Baseball. I've been an NBA addict for a little bit, and when I tried to watch Baseball again ... I never really liked watching it, but now it's pretty much unbearable. Seems like the sport's from the 1800's with women in petticoats traipsing around and moving very, very slowly.
As for the 1-1 tie: England badly outplayed us, but their goalie dropped one ball and in general they didn't finish their scoring chances. Kicked most of them right at Howard.
As for 6 above: I dunno if that's true ... it definitely looked like it through most of that game. I read that Donovan can be "mercurial". Maybe he'll step it up later?
... Most importantly, though, what's up with South Korea? Thing is crazy.

You know what I meant...XD. I'm just saying that most Americans (myself not included), don't really care for soccer because something exciting isn't happening every moment of the game.
Now I must admit that soccer is finally becoming a lot more popular among the youth in America. I say wait a couple more World Cups, and I think the US will finally start being a powerhouse country.
@_S3BaS_: I honestly think that the US had a legitimate chance at beating England. England is an over-hyped team, in my opinion. Just like how in magic you can't take all the very best cards, throw them in a deck and have a tier 1 deck, you can't just take all of the best club players from England and expect them to completely stomp everyone.
I also don't see how you think the US team is god awful. They played very well as a team, and were able to shut down England's best players, like Rooney. The only trouble the US has right now is that their defense is not used to playing with each other, and therefore they sometimes make mistakes, like leaving the man wide open in the 4th minute. As for the US goalkeeper, he did a phenomenal job of directing the US defense and keeping the US in the game.

Don't know, i think it's all about the points. A soccer game full of goals gives you 4x2, what kind of score is that?
Basketball 100x99, Football (praticed with hands!!) 40x30, Baseball 7x4 ...don't know, i believe americans have something with numbers, they like huge scores.
Now I must admit that soccer is finally becoming a lot more popular among the youth in America. I say wait a couple more World Cups, and I think the US will finally start being a powerhouse country.
Lol, not in a hundred years. It's not about money, or population, there are tons of factors involved, specially having a "swing".
You know, take England and Spain, biggest clubs in earth, both with football as a national sport (soccer for US guys), and just England, ONCE, won the WC, Spain never got close.
Now, take Brazil or Argentina for example, our clubs can't compete with the top european ones (hell, even Emirates, Ukrane and such can take our players), but we'll always produce the top notch players, just because our players have the swing, soccer is in our blood, while europeans have a "hard waist", so they just can't dribble like South Americans.
So, even if US adopt Soccer as it's main sport, even so, it'd take alot of time to become a powerhouse to at least have a real chance of World Cup title.

I don't think England is hyped, they've got alot of good results and have 3-4 skilled players, but turned to make a real bad game vs US. I don't put the merit of the draw on US (maybe it's goalkeeper that is really good), but mostly on England making a real bad game (even so they were superior to americans).
But i'd not say US team is awful too, just a medium team with no skillful players, besides it's goalkeeper that reallly impressed me.

I agree with Halted Asylum completely. And USA isn't too bad, I feel like they are as good as Australia. It seems football has only gotten big in Australia since last WC (Its was the first time in like 50 years since Australia has been to the WC).
You know what I meant...
I did, I just had to make a joke when I saw "9 year olds" and "entertaining" in the same sentence.
I just think England's game was a bit off this morning, they will easily get through the group round and I feel that its time we win another WC!
USA Keeper was really good, but the rest of the team weren't as bad as everyone is saying they were.
Green was not great (Did you see how Capello and Beckham looked after the USA goal), it's a shame David James is injured.
You should have seen how I looked. I was really pissed off.
I don't think we will be seeing a green goalie jersey in a while...
Do you support Leeds Sephiroth Owa? My dad is from North Yorkshire and supported Leeds for years before he moved away. Apparently he went to a bunch of games.
If you want to see a game with goals. Youtube Norwich vs Colchester 2009.
7-1 on the opening day of the season to Colchester (underdogs) AT Norwich.
I'm pretty sure there is a game where Germany won 9-0. You would feel so bad if that happened.
No it isn't the fact that Americans like large scores, it's the fact that in general Americans MUST have a winner and a loser. A lot of Americans cant accept the fact that a draw is a valid result. This is one of the main reasons why the NHL, (A hockey league for those who are unfamiliar,) went from having a system that had ties to the shootout system to determine games during the regular season. It is also one of the reasons why the MLS here still isn't as big as it could be.
I hate to admit it, but it seems to me that US likes to get really lucky with goals in World Cup. Anyone remember the US' first European World Cup goal last World Cup? Here.
Now what I want to know is which one do you guys think was worse, this one or the last one?

Hmm... that's a toughie. OK maybe not, The Green one was worse. On the '06 goal, flukes like that do happen, but this time the goalie pretty much HAD it and then got a case of butterfingers. Now I wonder when Bart will come to get them back.
Screw Green or James, Joe Hart is where it's at. The only reason he didn't get the spot is because of his low age. Which is a lame reason, really.
But what's with the people badmouthing the US team? Sure, they can't compare to the likes of England on paper, but there is a lot of talent there. Michael Bradley impressed me the most - not only because of the goal (which really was Green's fault, after all), but because of how much he moves and how well he passes. Overall, the team has shown a lot of improvement over the years, even though footie would have to become their #1 sport before they can stand in the same grounds as the greats (not gonna happen). Still, I fully expect them to advance.
And after Germany's match, I'm beginning to put them among the favorites again. Superb team, and if they do well, Özil could very well end up being the player of the Cup.
Can't wait for the Brazil match on Tuesday, but even more interesting will be the match between Brazil's main adversaries. Both Ivory Coast and Portugal have what it takes to advance in my opinion, and the first match will be their most important to secure a spot.
I normally don't give a damn about soccer but hey it's the World Cup and most of the world is going to watch.
My main issue with soccer has always been the amount of "cheating" that players can get away with. I mean Thierry Henry's handball that may have cost Ireland a berth. All because the referee wasn't looking. There's also the (in)famous Maradano Hand of God.
There's also the insane amount of diving that occurs. Sure there are rules against it but when it seems like every few minutes some idiot fakes an injury I just can't watch anymore.
Also when every other sport in the world seems to have adopted the instant replay, recording ruling soccer hasn't. And seems to have actively resisted it. I mean really the FIFA president seems so naive as to state:
I appeal to all the players and coaches to observe this fair play. In 2010 we want to prove that football is more than just kicking a ball but has social and cultural value ... So we ask the players 'please observe fair play' so they will be an example to the rest of the world.
I want to ask what football fans think should happen.
I got to fell bad for Australia for losing 4-0 to Germany.

The main issue with this is that soccer is a game that's constantly moving. In order for the game to be played in a way that flows naturally, you can't have the officials running off to the sidelines and debating each time someone makes a questionable play. If you did then the games would hardly move as quickly as they do now. It wouldn't "feel" like soccer, it'd seem a different game entirely.
Also here's hoping the Danes hold it together tomorrow.
