I know this probably isn't anything new, I just found it funny and wanted to share.
This is obviously a copy of our good friend Crypt Ghast.
The series' name is often abbreviated as Watamote, if you are interested. Keep in mind MTG isn't a major part of it.
Also, I'm sorry if this should be in television, I just figured that would be more focused on discussion of western programs.
Well, Mokoto (main heroine) in episode 8 played with some mono black control deck with Crypt Ghast (draw in into starting hand) and Sorin's Vengeance (card that she had cheated to win the game ).
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
I also play Weiss Schwarz, Chaos, Vanguard and Wixoss.
Weiss Schwarz Sets
Accel World, Angel Beats, Familiar of Zero, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Guilty Crown, Kill La Kill, Robotics;Notes, Sword Art Online.
Chaos Partners
Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Iona, Kirishima, Kongou.
Dangan Ronpa: Asahina, Togami.
Freezing: Vibration: Chiffon, Satelizer.
Vanguard Clans Favoured
Angel Feather, Dark Irregulars, Genesis, Neonecter, Pale Moon, Shadow Paladins, Tachikaze.
MTG was also referenced in an episode of the anime "Moetan." The male main character plays card games, and has a poster with the art of an MtG card in his room.
It's also referenced in the visual novel "Umineko no Naku Koro Ni," in "End of the Golden Witch" (which is also coincidentally awesome and should be read by everyone):
"......Are you done preparing the game board now?"
"Yeah, that's right. Now I'll finally move on to the game. On to October 4, 1986...!"
".........I wonder what number October 4, 1986 this is. ......So, the Endless Witch. ...Beatrice. ...She really is a frightening child."
"Is your side going to do anything, Bern?"
".........Nope. If you've refused to repeat what I asked, then I'm done." "<Turn end>, right? <Untap, upkeep, draw>!! Come!! October 4, 1986!!!"
(The stuff in <arrows> was in English in the original Japanese text.)
Wasn't there some wizard movie that had MTG in it? IIRC Wizards helped promote it but it flopped anyway.
That would be the live-action remake of the Sorcerer's Apprentice, with Nicholas Cage and Jay Baruchel, which flopped because it was terrible. Wizards did do quite a bit of promotion for it, including designing a planeswalker card for one of the characters in the film.

That must be why they were terrible players.
