i'm not very familiar with T1 ubastax especially since i don't have access to power or the $200+ lands like workshop and bazaar....but i was curious of why thirst for knowledge isn't in the deck, i probably already know the answer though but anyways ubastax really does look like an awesome deck
but i was curious of why thirst for knowledge isn't in the deck
Two reasons:
1)Only 3 blue mana sources in the deck (Sapphire, Lotus, Academy)
2)Without Welder in play you're tying up a lot of mana for not a lot of benefit, especially if you have out Uba Mask.

This is definitely my favorite version of Stax... Although it doesn't really compare to MUD - my favorite Workshop deck by far...
I think with the return of Ichorid and the birth of Hulk Flash combined with their approachability by the less experienced player, Trinisphere and Sphere of Resistance could play a big part and bring Stax back. I think Tangle Wire would be the disposable agent due to the sheer speed of these combo decks, doing everything in one turn - I'd probably replace them with the aforementioned SoR's. Null Rods become useful only if they come down Turn 1 with Hulk to stop Mox-fueled Flash and almost not at all against Ichorid, especially Manaless versions. Pithing Needle seems a much better answer in both matchups.
What do you guys think are the chances that Stax can effectively slow down or stop altogether these new threats? Once again, I would expect these decks to show in big numbers, wouldn't it make sense to plan for that?
Just some thoughts...

"Dying with good cards in your hand is the surest sign that you did something wrong, somewhere." -Caleb Durward
+ Gorrila Shaman: How many? (And is there a reason it isn't here that I haven't realised? I have started playing UbaStax lately and have never once wanted a Mox Monkey. Tangle Wire and Smokestack have them tapped out or sacced out anyways and once that happens the Masks negate their draws anyways so I never really have had the need to Shaman something away.
- Tangle wire: I don't know how many, probably not all, but I don't like it particurlaly. In my little experience with the deck, if its tapped it might as well not be there for them. I love seeing a Tangle Wire in my openning hand.
- Barbarian ring?? This card with Crucible is your Finisher. Stax is about a slow locked out long game. Once you have them locked out you just Ring each turn until they are dead. 10 turns of Ringing them does the same end result as 2 turns with the Colossus.
+1 Finisher? Sundering titan or Darksteel Colossus plays well with Welder? See above, Stax is the Tortuise in this race.
+More simulacrum? My build doesn't run any creatures other than the requesite Welders so I really can't comment here.
I guess I should reiterate that I only started playing UbaStax about 2 months ago but have been learning from a friend who plays the deck ALOT so my comments might be right on or way off, I don't really know.
I don't have a ton of experience with Stax, but Null Rod and Gorilla Shaman seems like rather poor lock pieces in the current environment. For win conditions I would cut Solemn Simulacrum and add at least two of Sundering Titan/Triskelion/Duplicant. You are a prison deck but you still need efficient win conditions. Running 4 Crucibles but only 3 Wastelands seems a little odd given the number of non-basics nowadays.
Well, I'm sort of new to playing stax, but have tried Glimmervoid in place of some cities of brass and gemstone mines in my multicolored list for recall and time walk, and have been pretty pleased with the results. Is there a reason stax doesn't usually run glimmervoid? It would seem to lower the pain and loss of gemstone mine counters...

I think you are referring to 5C Stax which is being discussed here:
I have to wonder if Uba Mask is a good choice right now for red stax. The major issue is that it doesn't really do anything against decks that aren't GAT and Platinum Control. With more of a focus to aggro decks like Dawn of the Dead, Goblins, and Deez Naughts, Uba Mask seems like dead weight.
has this deck died now that Uba mask's wording has been changed to add mask counters to the cards that are removed?

Round One: Bill Copes playing Stax
Bill seems like a nice guy till I see that he's playing Stax and realize (by way of a concrete Magic formula I learned from my 4th grade math teacher) he has no soul.
there are still a couple stax players that use the uba mask engine here in my meta, so I am pretty happy about the change. But I agree that it doesnt seem like this was needed. Seems that wizards has there finger on the pulse of vintage as always...yeah right.

What happened to your testing regarding Null Brooch?
I like prison against combo. Seems pretty good, I'll have to test it.
creatures
4 birds of paradise
other spells
4 exploration

I use Glimmervoids in my 5C Stax build instead of City of Brass and they work just fine.
That being said, that is a very odd errata, I don't really see why it was necessary, seems very unintuitive to me.
