i have a few questions for some of the card choices here:
1. Remand seems too good to exclude from the list, especially considering that it can take think twice's slot, and it interacts with IOKs and seizes. is there a specific reason that remand is not run?
2. with the unban of BB and nacatl, how do we choose among the 3 sideboard(or possibly main board) red sweepers, pyroclasm, volcanic fallout, and anger of the gods? i can see fallout performing well against UB Fae, but anger of the gods is definitely better against zoo/VoR, while pyroclasm is easier on the mana base.
3. would we still consider white splash as an option? it opens us up to cards like lightning helix and PtE, and much better SB options such as stoney silent or even possibly supreme verdict.
This link provides a good reference chart for how to construct your mana base
For instance, I want to have the ability to play a turn 1 lightning bolt or turn 1 Inquisition of Kozilek with a 90% consistency rating
This means that for lightning bolt I need 14 untapped red sources and for IOK i need 14 untapped black sources.
Cryptic Command (You need 21 Blue total for 90% consistency of casting this on turn 4)
4 Scalding tarn
3 Marsh Flats
4 Steam vents
2 Watery Grave
2 Creeping Tar Pit
3 Island
2 Sunken Ruins
I'm able to fudge the blue number with only 20 blue by means of Sunken Ruins and all the cheap cantrips
You might not like running that amount of fetches and shocks, but it allows for more reliability for playing on curve. It's just my preference, but you're going to have to sacrifice consistency for a less painful mana base. My philosophy is that if you're not able to cast your spells, then you will be taking more damage than you otherwise would with the more consistent(although more painful) mana base
And on the maindeck, all I can really say after playing this deck for long is that Inquisition of Kozilek is kind of a must. Especially if you want to have a chance against the aether vial decks.
Remand is a lot more powerful in cruel control than it is in esper or uwr since we have IOK and Cruel ultimatum to compliment it
thanks for the advice! i read through pages before this, where the OP discusses the manabase with others, i find reflecting pool a quite interesting choice as it can be run alongside manlands, storage lands and shock lands. So I would attempt to put some reflecting pools in the mana base for a start. but the thing that bothers me is that reflecting pool doesnt produce anything on its own, and if i run 4x i risk a great chance of drawing more than 1 in my opponening hand, which is almost surely a mulligan... i might start with running 8 fetches and 6 shocks to begin with, and running 4 manlands and 1-2 storage lands alongside 3 reflecting pool might do the trick...
btw, do you feel that 26 lands is a necessity in this deck if i were to run 4 colours?
im currently playing esper control and it has not proven to be a solid control deck thus far, and im very interested in the grixis cruel control or the version with white splash. I have a few questions and i wonder if you guys can help me with them
1. should i run vendilion clique MB or in the SB? do we need the clique? what about a singleton batterskull for the same purpose?
2. please help with my manabase conversion, what is the most convenient/cheapest option for me?
I currently have this:
i have 1 steam vent and 1 blood crypt to work with right now... thinking about getting the storage lands and the 4x reflecting pools....
Thank you guys!
