Because Shrapnel Blast was not impressive, and Atog gives a) Another threat and b) recurring sac outlet for Disciple shenanigans.
5 damage was great, but I felt like I flooded on Burn and fell behind. Maybe its better than Atog, not sure. But gonna try this out and see how it goes (Please feel free to help me out)
Alright. So I tested my affinity list and here are my thoughts:
Disciple of the Vault broke the mirror. In half. I didnt realise the card says when "AN" artifact, not when an artifact you control, dies. So ya. Card was nuts and I 2-0'd my 2 matches vs Affinity easily.
I also lost to burn for the first time in a very long time 1-2, but I could have played much better. I was trying a couple different things and it didnt work, I know now. It happens.
I also beat Junk on the back of Disciples saccing to get around Lingering Souls, and Etched Champion being Etched Champion. But after I showed him how to properly board I won 2 games of 10 post board, but the only time he did win was turn 2 Stony Silence. So that wasnt too good, but at the same time Stony Silence just isnt played very much. Regardless, made some tweaks.
As such, this is what I'm trying the next few days:
Need to work on the sideboard a lot, but I think the main board is at the point where if the deck doesnt perform, I'm just going to perfect/tune my stock list, as I dont think Days Undoing is gaining percentage vs Jund and Grixis Control (which is already a favorable matchup) to lose a lot of points vs the mirror and burn.
My major problem with Undoing is that it somewhat seems to be overkill : the only real bad and frequent match-up I have is Twin, which won't get significantly better with Undoing. For other matches-up, I don't feel Undoing is necessary, and it reduces the synergies of the deck. Still, it is so asymetrical and combines well with ravager...
Actually, Undoing is insane against that deck. It draws you into Galvanic Blast and forces them to shuffle away all the cards they've scryed with Serum Visions and accumulated with Electrolyze, Snapcaster Mage, and Cryptic Command.
Undoing is at its very best against midrange decks. AKA the decks Affinity loses to.
My concern is does it make you lose percentage against decks like Burn, Scapeshift, the mirror, infect and Tron? If so, I dont think its worth it...main board. If its honestly good vs Midrange decks, I could see it boarded.
Or something similar to this. I dont typically like 17 lands, but with Star not being a "permanent" mana source and requiring more colors I like going up to 17.
Would it kill you to look back at the thread? I posted this 18 days ago. We discussed it
I think with focusing that many 2 drops we may have to go to 17 lands. We really wanna hit 4 mana more with Hangarback than before.
One thing I want to say is this: This list has been putting up a lot of results this week. The first 3-1 I kinda dismissed, but its been 3-1ìng and 4-0ing all week, and its worth testing.
Hi all, robots player, coming back with new account.
What I want to ask you are some suggestion about my decklist, I have a PPTQ next week and I'm a bit in trouble with sideboard and the choice to cut off (with some tears) Master of Etherium for 4 Etched Champion maindeck. This opened me 2 spot in the side but I'm not pretty sure how to fill them to have more versatile answers. I'm also not pretty sure of the 2x Thoughtcast..
I'm expecting a lot of twin/podless/griselshoal so I put in some combo disruption and graveyard hate.
I had split the 2 Torpor Orb in 1 and 1 Illness in the Ranks that works vs twin but also for BW token/lingering souls on junk/abzan. Grafdigger's Cage for dredge, living end, griselshoal and URX cutting off all the snapcaster/flashback tools.
I'm trying the 1x Wear / Tear for have at least one possibility to escape from a Stony Silence (but it needs a Glimmervoid on the board) that I haven't countered/discarded with spell pierce or duress (don't have kozilek/seize atm).
Will be my first tournament that I play without Master of Etherium but in this meta full of removal and hate, Etched Champion is a safier cast over Master and over Steel Overseer too, because usually it will not even be able to use his ability once, too much hate to face.
Any suggetions? Ty
Barbe
Do not cut a mana source. 16 lands, 4 Mox 4 Springleaf Drum is the minimum if your gonna be playing 3 drops.
After testing some more, Hangarback Walker is too slow for the main, and with Grixis Control on the rise 4 Galvanic Blast isnt that good. I'm going to try 1 Thoughtcast instead of 1 of the Galvanic Blasts and see if that helps, but I was also (ironically after calling out Frank Karsten lol) having Mana issues for the first time.
I am going to be trying Day's Undoing vs Grixis more, and I'm going to be testing a lot of tweaks to find what feels optimal.
Considering Frank Karsten is regarded as probably one of the best robots players and knows what he's talking about, you probably should take his opinion to heart.
Trust me when I say I take Frank Karsten's opinion to heart. However innovation and progress does not happen when you look to others consistently. The key is to also make some decisions for yourself.
For example, Frank swears by 17 lands. How many lands do you run? I run 16, because I have made that decision for myself as 17 has been too many too often.
As for his argument for Dismember, you can find that here:
Quote from Frank Karsten on Dismember »
It's colored which is a problem for two reasons: (i) you're already bringing in too many colored spells for the mirror and you don't want the draw with Ancient Grudge, Dispatch, and no Opal/Drum/Glimmervoid, (ii) Pestermite taps down your Glimmervoid, and the Blinkmoth Nexus you still have untapped cannot cast Dispatch in response to Splinter Twin. Hence, I prefer Dismember. Moreover, I board out removal against Junk to focus on artifact synergies, not board in.
I understand this argument, but I feel it is flawed. And its the argument I have argued against already, so I'm not going to again. And this was also his decision a month ago. It may change.
I can count the number of times on one hand I havent had metalcraft that I didnt just lose the game immediately after losing metalcraft, and I have played THOUSANDS of games with Affinity.
If we dont have metalcraft, casting a Dismember isnt going to catch us back up. We are in serious trouble.
Dispatch is also better vs Grixis Control, as the 4 life is surprisingly relevant vs their clocks.
I run Dismember for Deceiver Exarch. Deceiver can easily tap you off White mana forcing you to cast it early.
The difference between Dismembering an Exarch before the Twin and after the twin is miniscule, and typically if they untap with 5 mana and an Exarch, they have Dispel. Casting it early is not a downside.
On top of that, 4 life is important in a lot of matchups.
I would rather just use Dispatch and have it gone.

So your running 18 land, 3 Springleaf and 4 Mox instead of 17 land, 4 Springleaf and 4 Mox? I'm not sure if I like that but it is worth testing.
What are your lands? 4 Glimmer, 4 Inkmoth, 4 Blinkmoth, 4 Darksteel 2 basics?
