I think he meant that it is not wise to not consider damnation. To be fair the other grixis list are not really like Cruel Control and more like grixis moon/ delver decks that can't afford to kill off their own creatures with a board wipe.
Most of us do not play Young Pyromancer like the other lists do. All of our lists are competitive and there is one important point I need to make.
Our lists will never be 100% the same because control decks are tuned to beat a specific meta. That is the nature of control
To a certain extent I agree that we will never run the exact same 75....we are all on this forum because we all want to play something different and still be competitive. I also think that obviously specific meta tuned lists are fine, but I also think it is possible to have a deck that is mostly good in a lot of different situations and I think that Cruel Control could get to a point where we all at least share 50 something of the same cards in the main deck...as a core set of cards we all know we use and could not cut from the deck.
Rotten my first question is cuz ur list run 0 mass removal on ur main deck, and 0 Damnation in 75, I really think we can't be competitive without those cards
Rotten my first question is cuz ur list run 0 mass removal on ur main deck, and 0 Damnation in 75, I really think we can't be competitive without those cards
I think that you are correct...I think sweepers are needed in most matches like Collected Company decks, affinity and even aginst junk/abzan decks. I think his list gets away without maindeck removal a little better because he has a lot of card draw and some bigger bodied blockers for cheap with counter magic back up...
The thing that's interesting to me is that NONE of the other Grixis lists that have placed in the top 8 on SCG: Opens or Invitationals run any Damnations in the 75 either.
What's more interesting is your guys lists are the first lists that have advocated for Damnations.
To be fair; the majority of the creature decks that we have to worry about are wipe-able with Anger of the Gods out of the side.
All the other creature decks turn out to be Combo Decks and so you wouldn't want to tap out for a Turn 4 Wipe as it is.
Thus far; I haven't felt like I needed board sweeps other than Anger of the Gods.
SO I guess It's interesting that it's being said that my list isn't competitive because it lacks Damnation... Tell that to all the Grixis players that have Top 8'ed over the last 3 months or so that also opted to not run Damnation.
Whoa dude... No one said that your list isn't competitive... But the outside of the twin decks... The collected company decks can just play as a beatdown deck the majority of the time until they hit their combo. I just said that I feel it is needed because we are generally trying to play a longer game and that affinity can just run you over without a sweeper in the main deck. If your meta is light on those decks then it is perfectly fine to not run the sweepers main. I just travel a lot and never know what kind of meta I am going to be playing so I build my deck to be able to fight any sort of deck I come across vs. Being tuned to beat my local meta decks. I usually play in a different area every week all summer long then I have a more dedicated 75 during the winter where I see the same decks every week.

...also if you want to just take a random card in a match up to see what they are working with in hand it is fairly relevant.
Such WIN!!!
I agree with this and this is a very valid thing too.
With so many decks too having access to some very early spells to help them setup; it's very reasonable that we're going to take something pretty significant in the matchup while getting to look at what they're working with.
You are correct...I think against some of these greedy delver decks with 18 land mana bases that we could actually maybe hit their serum visions and maybe sit them back on their lands enough to get ahead in the match up...I haven't tried it but it may be relavant...maybe not. I have given it plenty of thought though especially with Fulminator to take out any non basics they may fetch up.
I think the Split Second on Extirpate is great but Surgical Extraction being able to be played for 2 life can be huge against certain decks...also if you want to just take a random card in a match up to see what they are working with in hand it is fairly relevant. I think for now I will stay with what I have in Surgical Extration
Oh I have played with Fulminator before and blew up all the lands a burn player had with Kolaghan's Command recursion. He just had a lone goblin guide left...
Seems really good...They deserve the punishment for the amount of hell they put the rest of us through.
I'll let you guys choose that last sideboard slot.
Edit: I may ditch the batterskulls
I think after playtesting the fulminators you will like them a lot...they are actually that good in matches where the other deck tries to go over the top of us with huge mana...plus kolaghan's command buys us so much time against them....plus snapcaster command to get to get back fulminator is such a powerful play against them. I actually don;t know what I would play in the last sideboard slot, but I really do believe Chalice of the Void for 0 is a reasonable way to win against bloom titan forcing us to pay for pacts using Hive Mind. So it leaes them having to beat us through combat damage which is where our deck is at it's best through counter and removal. I think the deck is to popular to just not have anything in the sideboard for it. Plus I would imagine that this weekend Twin and Infect will be on the rise to try and combat Tron.
Bloom is on the rise--spell snare is critical there. Spell snare is nuts against twin in conjunction with other removal. Spell snare hits all of the IMPORTANT burn spells-- we don't really care about bolts, lava spikes, and goblin guides, it's the cmc 2 utility burn spells that you really don't want resolving. Full set of spell snare is perfectly fine, as when it's bad it's easy to cut postboard.
I know that Bloom is going to get played and it is part of the reason I run the build of cruel I run with maindeck Fulminator and shadow of doubt. I think overloading on spell snare as a 4 of makes some of your other matches much worse. Against Twin sure it's probably okay. Against Tron the card is downright miserable and I think that a hand with 2 is almost not a keep if you know they are on it. I think 3 is probably alright but I am not that confident in a narrow range counterspell that isn't good in every match especially with it lining up poorly against the tron match up. I'd rather be on kolaghan's command/Fulminator than 4 snare. Also out of the board I think having the surgical extraction for the land you destroy makes that match up much better for us as it makes them play our game except there Spells that kill us start at 6 mana which is a fight we can easily win.
Bloom Titan is a pain but I've had mild success against it and I feel it it winnable... Granted it is a grind, but it's fine realistically. I think a good option to look into is Chalice of the Void for zero to cut off the kills with hivemind/pact. We have terminate for titan and Thragtusk.. We have Damnation/anger/electrolyze for Hornet queen plus infinite counterspells going late.
Burn everywhere so I set some snares for those fire happy mofos
The full set on snares seems maybe one to many... Lol. I think if you want another counterspell main you could possibly rock a counterflux or maybe even something as bad as a Mindswipe.
I also question Chandra in your list because generally speaking she isn't typically run with counterspells because he exiting one is typically real bad... I think she could be good enough if you were planning on having some way to manage the top of your deck with serum visions or condescend so you knew what the top card you wanted to exile is.
I do agree with most of the choices in the deck... I will say that if you with Delver decks everywhere I don't know that you will actually ever get the card you wanna hit with the cruel edicts. I think the terminates are fine for the thoughtscour tarmogoyf tasigur/Angler decks as none of our other removal outside damnation touches them. Maybe far/away is a solid choice to give you an out to a hex proof dude and leaving you with a potential snapcaster bounce in the process or to just shoot a tasigur back to hand if necessary.
Granted you know what you want to be playing so good luck either way.
Gj guru . Keep testing fulminator mage ... I need ur feedback
between the Fulminator Mage in the maindeck I really think it makes our tron match much more manageable. You get to counter their first thing or two and then pop a tron land. (usually whatever they searched for). Then we can buy back the Fulminator with kolaghan's command and usually hit a meaningful artifact like an oblivion stone or a map if they are tapped low or tapped out and just make them grind through the first x amount of turns. In my build specifically I get to keep them under pressure to find the lands by making them discard to liliana. Then when she ultimates it's usually enough to keep them at bay long enough for snapcaster/Tasigur/Tar Pit to win the game.
Alright, so here is my decklist that I used tonight....Main deck is 61 cards because I was finalinzing my landbase and accidently kept the blackcleave cliffs in and it was awesome all night so now I kinda don't want to lose it.
Round 1 Mardu Aristocrats - 2 wins - 0 losses Similar to the list while it was still standard legal except with path's and bolts to help kill his opponent's even still used the borors reckoner/blasphemous act combo kill...games wasn't even close.
Round 2 - Bant Sun Titan combo - 2wins - 0 losses Game one I actually thought he was n ad nausem tendrils when I seen the suspend Lotus Bloom Turns out he was just playing a leyline of anticipation bant titan deck that could combo kill you with Kessig Wolf Run on a titan...I happen to draw all my crytics and both terminates with 3 snapcasters and that's an easy game one...Game two he has a set Cavern of Souls on titan...he casts turn 4 sun titan with leyline and sun titan triggers returning lotus bloom...I cast terminate on it and he right echoing truth's it back to hand...I play fulminator mage and pop his cavern...he misses land drop for the turn and attempts to recast titan and it resolves and I cast sideboardd in Rakdos Charm to exile his graveyard in respone only to top a liliana and make him scarifice titan then I drew crytic snapcaster crytic and finished out the game with snapcastering his lands to hsi hand and making him discard them via liliana...
Round 3 - 1 win - 2 losses Bant infinite turns combo... Game one he lands Narset Transcendentwhile I have no counters in hand and I untap and cast a Tasigur for one holding up mana to activate him and he uses the negative ability and casts time warp with rebound during his next turn he casts garruk wildspeaker and untaps his bounceland and casts eternal witness getting back his time warp. I activate Tasigur get back a electrolyze...it finds me land and he shows me the infinite combo and we go to game 2.
I side in Rakdos Charm, Counterflux, surgical extraction and Vendilion clique, and thoughtsieze...I open on blackcleave cliffis into Inquistion and take his eternal witness see that he is light on lands and pass he...plays island serum visions...I play fetch and thoughtsieze...take his narset, transcendent and he plays another visions and casts u/g bounce land...I fulminator his bounce land and follow it up with Vendilion clique and bolt snap botl and he dies with 3 lands in play...Game 3 I get to inquisition/surgical extraction his time warp out of his deck and follow it up with a snapcaster on his eternal witness...but I end up losing to a Narset ultimate when I can't draw a lighting bolt to keep her off her ultimate...not one to cal it yet I land Keranos and hit bolt after bolt against him until he lands kiora naming Keranos and I have no way left to win after a supreme verdict cleared my bard the turn before. I eventually fall to 9/9 Krakens.
Round 4 G/R Tron 2 wins 0 losses- Game one he leads on Groveof the Burnwillows into Ancient Stirring...Finds piece #1 I play fetch we trade land drops and I drop turn 3 fulminator and hit the tron land he fetched for...follow up with liliana to get us both into a top deck war...I use kolagah's command the following turn to destroy his oblivion stone and return fulminator...recast fulminator taking out another tron piece...ends up scooping to Liliana ultimate with Jace in play.
Game two is about the same as the first....3rd turn tron natrually I leak the karn...cast fulminator mage into Surgical extraction on the tron piece and he cusses for a bit about who plays that terrible card and I follow it up with a jace and get free ultimatum and cast emrakul.
We play 3 other games and he won 1 of the 3...
Final thoughts...I was 3-1 on the nght and I think Fulminator Mage was absolutely instrumeental in the wins that we had...Tasiur wasn't bad, but icould see him going down to a 1 of because his ability wasn't really all that impressive past the first couple times you activate it...but to give the man credit he is an awesome blocker and he can end the game swiftly if left unchecked. I mean in this deck cruel is mostly an afterthought because I can usually win with Tasigur, fulminator, snap, tar pit before I even draw cruel. Granted it is a nice back up plan to have, it just didn't show itself this week. Oh and Shadow of doubt main deck is fine but not great. When it is good it's awesome and sometimes it just rots in your hand if you are stubborn and wanna get your opponent with it.
Grixis is one of my favorite color combinations and I do like the flexibility I have seen here. Admittedly, going the Cruel route is probably not as straight forward as non-Cruel, but I'll be damned if the spell is not satisfying to play.
Is there a consensus on the ideal number of Cryptics to play, or is it rather subjective?
I think it depends mostly on how aggresive of a format you are going to be playing in honestly...I've played up to four...currently I play 3 as I draw them often enough...I think most people that aren't on pure draw - go style decks play 2. I don't think that it is wrong to play more but because of how I play my deck late game I really don't want to counter everything anymore and I really switch into a more beatdown role as their hand goes empty. It is hard to invest into attacking with man lands and holding up cryptic so I cut one out.
Quick question, how playable is this deck currently without Tarns or Lili? I am looking into building something new and this is one of the options that interests me the most.
I am pretty sure I am the ony one on here that plays Liliana of the Veil...so the deck is highly playable without her it's just how I prefer to run this deck.
Scalding Tarn on the other hand is not needed necessarily but it is handy to have because it can fetch island which is real good against people who intend on casting Blood Moon against you...which I will say sucks but is still very winnable.
Good to know on Lili. I understand that about Tarn, but at this point in time $50 a pop is a bit much for me and this is for local play anyway where I rarely see Blood Moon (and am less likely to see more of it soon with the price spike).
Seems good...Good luck and have fun with the deck...if you look on this thread you will see the deck itself is playable in many different forms and really is strong against any match up as long as they don't run a high number of enchantments because outside of artifacts we do not get get enchantment removal in these colors.
