I like the box but I probably wouldn't put cards bareback in it. Not saying you did (except for those Pokemon cards). The Etsy link shows a bunch bare cards in the box.
They're not Pokemon cards, they're Energy Counters for his new Kaladesh expansion.
Seriously, though... nice box, Steve! Looks good!
Does anyone have experience with the KMC Hypermat purple sleeves? I want a slightly offbeat color of sleeves for my cube, but after being disappointed that the Ultra Pro pro matte orange sleeves aren't actually opaque, I want to make sure the next ones I order will be.
A few weeks late, sorry, but I've got the purple Hypermattes on my kids peasant cube.
Totally opaque, and currently happily standing up to a 7yo's rough handling.
I've had it together for about six months now, and haven't had to replace a single sleeve yet.
Same here. And then I saw your cube list on top of it.
It's a good thing you didn't post photos of the cube cards on top of the box pictures... you'd probably have been responsible for a lot of "Cleanup in Aisle 7"s.
My purple Hyper Mattes arrived yesterday (yay for early Christmas presents!)... already in love...
... now trying to figure out how to justify forking out for them on my primary cube...
Yes, waiting sucks.
My purple Hyper Mattes were due last Tuesday... but there's been a train derailment in the outback that's held up packages between the left and right coasts of Australia for about a week. So I'm guessing they're baking in 100+ degree heat somewhere in the middle of nowhere as I type. Be safe, little sleeves!
KMC Super Mattes (black, FWIW) have been fantastic for me. Cut evenly, they don't split, work perfectly for double-sleeving, and they don't attract dirt and scratches like a magnet (which Dragon Shields did for us).
Same here (coincidentally, also black). Mine is single-sleeved, so maybe that holds to Otto's theory above (that KMCs are great when single-sleeved).
I've just bought a stack of purple KMC Hyper Mattes for my new pauper cube - they turn up in about a week. I'll let you all know how I go with them. This will be my first feel of a Hyper Matte, let alone use of them, but everyone on here raves about them, so I've given them a go. This cube is going to get punished by a 6yo, so I'll know if they split or not pretty quick.
I'm considering making my own... It's hard to tell from the picture, but what type of joints is that box? Dovetail, overlap? Are there any screws? It looks really nice.
Haha! Do you know, without it actually infront of me, I have no idea about half of it!
My father-in-law is the builder-type - I handed my wife the measurements off this thread, and the two of them conspired together for a Christmas present.
The joints are definitely miter joints (i.e. 45-degree joins). I don't think there are any screws in there... probably just a motherlode of wood glue.
Going completely off my memory, the hinges are small dovetail hinges with screws. But I might be wrong. I'll see if I can wrangle a photo of the back hinges for you over the coming days if you wish (might take me a few days to get to this, but all for the benefit of the hive mind, right?)...
Copying from my cube thread, so I don't have to retype this, for those interested in building their own (or having someone else do it for them)...
This was built for me from old jarrah offcuts. Jarrah is one of the hardest woods on the planet (and they use it for bridges, jetties and railway sleepers in my neck of the woods), so you can imagine how much this thing weighs. It is lined on the inside with blue felt. The ribbon in the picture is loose, and just used as a divider between the cube and the basic land / creature tokens.
You too can build one like this if you (or someone you know) has the skill to. Mine was built to the following dimensions - L 15 1/4", H 3", W 3 13/16". These dimensions are the measurements of the internal space inside the box - you can make the outside as big or small as you choose. To fit a bigger cube, make the length figure of 15 1/4" longer. The other two measurements are absolutely spot on (the width is particularly important... you do not want to go over or under this figure). As can be seen above, it holds the 360-card cube and 150 land quite comfortably. The guy who came up with the original measurements says that this length should hold a 500-card cube snugly.
I'd love to take that safe to con, and when about ready to Cube, drop it onto the table.
THUD.
WHO'S READY TO GAME?!?
-AA
I should totally weigh mine sometime, as this is exactly what mine does. THUD. CUBE TIME. Yay custom-made hardwood boxes!
You know, not that I want to get into a manly size-comparison contest or anything... that thing looks incredible, Palanthas!
Who uses KMCs to sleeve? Have you liked the quality? Do you prefer smooth or matte?
I'm running KMC Matte Blacks, and they have been faultless. I lost my first sleeve a few weeks back, and it took 2.5 years.
I certainly won't be switching from KMC, but I'll certainly be looking at the Hypermattes when it comes time to resleeve - what others say above about the sleeves getting a little tacky to touch over time is true. But it's not like I'm busting them or anything... it might be a while before I have to indulge that fantasy.
But yeah, matte over smooth. Much easier to shuffle and get a grip on.
I just got my matte black KMCs and perfect fits. I didn't realize how thick it would make the card! Also, they slide all over the place, can't even hold a deck without the cards flying everywhere. Please tell me that they stop doing this after a while.
Yeah, the KMCs do stop sliding around like they're covered in oil eventually.
It probably took my cube a year of play for that to stop happening (though my cube is not played as frequently as some). They're wonderful now, though. Worth every cent. Had them on for two years now, and still haven't even gone close to losing a sleeve.
Does anyone have any information regarding the transparency of the backs of KMC matte, hypermatte and dragonshields? I currently use UltraPro sleeves for my cube and because some of my cards are gold bordered with different backs, you can see them through the sleeve (same also goes for double faced cards). I plan to buy a bunch of new sleeves in the near future and don't want to get burned if they're semi-transparent. Thanks
KMC Matte blacks are absolutely, positively not transparent. Streets ahead of the UltraPros in that regard.
They're not Pokemon cards, they're Energy Counters for his new Kaladesh expansion.
Seriously, though... nice box, Steve! Looks good!
