Nice finds on the cube art, thank you! I don't know how I walked right over mana vault.
Anyway are you asking me if I double sleeve?
I think he's asking me.
The majoriy of the collection was acquired, sleeved and toploaded, boxed, bindered whatever pre-2000, before I quit for a time. There were no products available for double sleeving (perfect fit + standard sleeve) at that time. It wasn't for lack of trying though. I used to go to the card shop and sift through penny sleeves looking for any that were under and over cut to make them fit inside each other for my decks, but I couldn't acquire enough of them to sleeve my entire collection that way. As such, top loaders are single sleeved.
Around 1997, '98 or so, sleeve size tolerances got a lot better. New card protection products were even tighter (not quite perfect fits yet). This was based around the idea that a tightly fitting sleeve would keep the opening closed and dirt would be less likely to get in. Double sleeving wasn't an option nor a product yet. If it was, it wasn't widely available yet.
Double sleeving inside top loaders? I wouldn't do it. Looking at charts for polypropelyne, you'll see chlorine is listed as poor resistance. I have to brush up on my chemistry for PVC to see what reactions occur with PP, but do you want to risk it?
Double sleeves are beyond amazing, man. I would honestly just double sleeve and go into a box. Toploaders seems excessive.
I have japanese foiled legacy decks in perfect fits + sleeves and all of the cards remain in the same condition as when I got them years ago.
So, been out of the loop for the better part of a year.
Want to resleeve the cube with sleeves that are matte on the front and back. It seems my option are Legion Double Matte, KMC hyperMatte Premium and Ultra Pro Matte.
First off the list is ultra pro, super flimsy and thin, no thank you.
Then it is between the kmc and the legion ones. I have had the old kmc hyper matte (premium and regular) and those hold up very well. It seems their quality has gone down (at least for the regular hyper mattes). My main question is if this quality drop affects the kmc hypermatte premiums too? If it does, then, are the legion double mattes better?
A last resource would be matte inner sleeves if anyone offers those and dragon shield mattes (I have found no matte inner sleeves and doubt there is a market for those)...
Up for suggestions (but some brands might be pretty hard to find where I live)
If you can find them, Ultra Pro Eclipse sleeves are a brand new product that rival the quality of Dragon Shield Mattes and the old formula KMC hyper mattes. I know it sounds weird because UP is normally awful for sleeves but they did it right this time, even removing the little silver circle on the front of all their sleeves. They come in a variety of colors and are matte on both sides.
@Zetsu_Sensei: Earlier this year we moved from black KMC Mattes to black KMC Hyper Mattes. It seems that we bust at least one sleeve every time we cube since going to the Hyper Mattes. I believe it's due to side shuffling and the corners poking into the side of the sleeves as they come down on each other. I've also noticed several that I've had to replace due to the bottom splitting. After every few drafts, I find that I need to go through the entire cube and pull the 'bad' sleeves that are busting open at the bottom. Obviously the KMC Mattes had busted sleeves and splitting issues as well, but we had those sleeves on for something like three years or so, maybe even four and the amount of busted sleeves was nowhere near what I've seen with the Hypers. The last thing I don't like as well is the texture on the back of the Hypers vs the normal Mattes. The Mattes felt just that, matte. Not glossy. The Hypers have a rough texture that, I guess, is supposed to protect from scratches and grime. I'm not a fan of it, though. That's not really a fault of the sleeve, but more a personal preference of mine.
With all that said, it's possible that I just ended up with a few bad packs when I purchased mine, however, I probably won't be going with Hypers when we upgrade sleeves again.
This is trully worrisome. It's exaxctly the kind of comment that makes me hesitate buying into KMC Hyper Mattes. Can anyone else testify on this?
My legacy decks in KMC hyper mattes barely split any sleeves, but my cube has a ton. Maybe its my ham handed people playing my cube, haha. I'm going to be going to DS Mattes when I resleeve to try them out. I like the new Sky blue color too. I did however have two full runs of hyper mattes on my cubes so far and they did the job well. I guess it just depends how your players shuffle.
I've been currently using the Large Piratelabs case. It's huge, but holding playmats and a binder all in one is fantastic for me. Holds my 555 + Basic lands + dice and 4 legacy decks in magnetic boxes. The shoulder strap is also a huge plus, especially since I bring my cube many places, and even things like GP's. If I didn't have to tote it around, I'd certainly get a nice wood box or something.
Does anyone have experience with the KMC Hypermat purple sleeves? I want a slightly offbeat color of sleeves for my cube, but after being disappointed that the Ultra Pro pro matte orange sleeves aren't actually opaque, I want to make sure the next ones I order will be.
So I have both the Purples from Dragonshield and the KMC Purple Hyper Matte. I prefer the darker tone of the Dragonshield purples. The KMCs are pretty much violet unless they came out with a new color. I did buy these sleeves over 15 years ago.
If you're looking for quality, KMC. I've had a lot of dragonshield sleeves split on me.
Anyone know where to buy bulk sleeves? All I know are LGS's and Amazon. Thanks!
EDIT: I looked through some of this post but some of the links are dead.
Potomac Dist is okay for buying bulk sleeves but you need a $150 order to make shipping free. I personally just shop on amazon for sleeves now. It's more or less wholesale price and you can get amazon prime on a lot of them. I just bought 1K KMC Perfect fits for around $25. Hard to beat that.
Same here. And then I saw your cube list on top of it.
It's a good thing you didn't post photos of the cube cards on top of the box pictures... you'd probably have been responsible for a lot of "Cleanup in Aisle 7"s.
Haha! I saw the list too. I'm guessing orange cards were proxies, and light blue foils? Either way, amazing box and sweet cube! Get on that cubetutor though!
Very nice. I do like the fact it has a whole strap and everything. That is honestly my one gripe about my current box is the briefcase style. I think it's really nice and holds well, but carrying it around a GP or something all day is just tiring. Add on the fact it holds a mat and binder and I think i'll be very pleased. Definitely on my look out for list, but I would wait for the restock on the 3 row for sure.
As time passes I'm still somewhat curious about the piratelabs large cases. Being able to hold a playmat AND a binder is a huge plus to me. They apparently got a great shoutout from TCC, so they're sold out of the 3 row tray right now, but I might give it a shot.

No love for double sleeves? It's less than $3 a pack on amazon, and it makes a 40 card deck feel really nice to shuffle.

Holds 1200 double sleeved cards, it says. Not sure if this is really better than a pirate labs or something, either.
