It's a shame to see this deck drop another Tier...it will always be a Top Deck in my opinion.
But I would like to bring up Murder Investigation for discussion. (now with it's reprint coming soon in origins)
It fits our curve for sure.
I'm curious if it will see sideboard against Jund. Normally we can sac our Dryad Arbor for the first Lilly, but when it happens again we're screwed. We know our creature can get really, really big with the right string of enchantments so we'll get our value for it. I know there are some drawbacks to having a bunch of 1/1 creatures, but it almost feels like we get an Empty the Warrens secondary win condition with the card.
Mainboard Fields...such a tough call. When they resolved it was an immediate threat, but it wasn't enough of a stall against Lilly as I would have hoped.
I'll probably go back to mainboard Paths for a little bit to see what feels better.
Well...Baltimore was a bust...still a fun time though playing modern with 761 other players! I won't go into much detail but I'll give a report. I'll gladly expand on any of the matches if you would like me to.
Round one was Tez Artifacts...just wow...didn't see that one. Game one he blew me out with 5/5 indestructible lands and a lilly killing my only creature.
Game two was closer...until Damnation hit the field...that was that. 0-2
Round 2 I saw Abzan: Went to game three, and I made a horrible misplay. Game two I hit my leyline, but game three I stayed with my original seven as the hand was so powerful. He got stuck on two lands and I got greedy and went for an extra aura drop rather than getting my Dryad Arbor...then he top decks a land and that was it. 1-2
At this point I was already out of day two, but hell I didn't care. I paid $50 for this event so I'm going to play and have some fun.
Round 3 was Skred Red: This one blew my mind! Game on turn three Blood Moon...all I had out was a Spiritdancer and two non basics...Koth Mountains ended that game for me. Game two fetch all basics and my opening hand had a nature's claim so I knew I was OK until I had a big creature, which is exactly what happened. Game 3 same thing for a really big bogle. 2-1
Round 4 was Twin Game one he couldn't combo off thanks to Suppression Field. Game two saw wear-snap-wear into a really drawn out came with a lot of counters. Game three was turn four combo. 1-2
Round 5 was UWR Twin. The white just didn't work for him. Suppression Field and Torpor Orb did it's job. 2-0
Round 6 was Amulet...I found out I don't like this deck on bit! Both games turn two wins (Prime time and Hive Mind wins). Just crazy. 0-2
Round 7 was Abzan. This guy was really nice and we both had great plays. This time I did it right with the dryad arbor on game two. We went to game three and I ended up sicking a Spiritdancer after pathing two goys back to back. The next turn I drew into amazing auras with the dancers swinging for the win.
Round 8 was Loam Pox...just...damn. Sacrificing a creating on turn two when you don't have many to begin with is pretty bad... 0-2
There was one more round left for the day but I was hungry and there was an alehouse right next door calling my name....so that was that.
Even with a 3-5 record I had a blast playing the deck. Suppression field did it's job or at least made the threats.
Add Invisible Stalker, Aqueous Form, and maybe a counter or two (Swan Song)
I would cut down on the Spirit Dancers and Spider Umbras, and maybe add Keen Sense (Aqueous Form followed by Keen Sense- ship all your bad cards to the bottom...not too shabby)
Still tweaking the Baltimore Deck...As much as I appreciate Daniel Ward's deck I have to go with my own that's been pretty effective over the last few weeks here locally.
How have the Mainboard Suppression Fields Beine working out for you? In which matchups have they been effective? I like the two Volkes copies of Choke in the Sideboard. Are they as good as they seem? I am still toying around with the idea of having 2 copies of Mana Tithe in the Sideboard, just to catch Twin completly off-guard with them. I have a PPTQ coming up in April and I am really unsure with my sideboard, especially the Suppression Fields. If I want to have them Mainboard or not. What is your experience with them?
Regarding Rest in Peace: The card is awesome right now, hands down. Shuts down Snappy, makes Lingering Souls really bad, removes the biggest Upside that Tasigur has (Delve, and I expect to see him a LOT), turns Goyf into a 0/1, Scavenging Ooze wont be able to do anything. Try it.
Suppression Fields on the Main have been great. I think I started playing around with close to two months ago. The look on some players has been quite interesting. One Twin player basically said he felt like scooping when it landed.
Overall Suppression Field slows down a lot the decks that hurt us. It does hurt us a little bit with fetching our own land, or cycling our Horizon Canopy.
Tmiller: I'm a little surprised you bring in leyline against zoo, is it just for bolts and helix? I imagine they might side a number of those out, and I don't see them being that big of a deal anyway. I could see leyline coming after turn 1 and hurting you a lot more than it would have helped had you drawn it in your opener.
I'm also a litte surprised by the fact that ethereal armor would ever get sided out - it seems like that is one of your critical pieces in the deck and against Abzan I'd rather cut one of the suppression fields due to the fact that having seven answers to Lilliana in addition to the main board outs of dryad arbor/second bogle/spirit dancer/ etc. may be excessive.
Thank you for your input. Zoo is one of those match ups where I'm just not sure, so my though process went to stop the burn with leyline...but this is one of those decks where I don't want to see it other than my opening hand. Path is really our go to card and the life gain.
As for Abzan, I agree ethereal probably isn't the best card to dump..
Thankfully I have some time to keep tweaking, as well as get some advice from other players
I've also been working on the best sideboard options...here's what I'm thinking so far...
(I had to cut down Twin's card a lot- at one point there was 8 cards to replace which just killed our overall game plan)
I do feel at times I need to find room for Rest In Peace, but it's going to be hard to make that happen.
Still tweaking the Baltimore Deck...As much as I appreciate Daniel Ward's deck I have to go with my own that's been pretty effective over the last few weeks here locally.
I've tried it (Sage's Reverie) as a one of...when it first come out I was excited to see how it worked...but in the end it's a four drop...and that's pretty high for us.
So Taking what Daniel Ward played and adding in the Suppression Fields (I think at this point they are too good not to be considered in the 75) (Also recent SCG events show Hexproof decks in top 8 using them as well. Here is my "might be final build" for SCG Baltimore this weekend.
Congrats to him! He played his games very well, especially against the twin deck. The Abazan player in top 8 had the best draws ever...I mean...Curse of Death's Hold??!!!
Post game interview he stated he wish he had more chokes in the sideboard. I agree with Twin everywhere in the meta.
I'm definitely taking his advice on putting 2x Spellskite in the main for Baltimore. Although I'm not sold on 3x Unflinching Courage. I wonder if he was worried about Chalice so he wanted more three drops.
