Hello! I currently have a traditional mono-red goblins list. Was planning to try out one of your GoBots lists. I would just like to ask which hands would be keepable when playing this kind of deck? TIA
@Medrage nice list! I was also thinking about increasing the free spells in order to fully maximize the new whacker. I was also pondering on using mutagenic growth as well. Mutagenic can also help us to prevent losing tempo on a T1 piledriver that eats a bolt in response.
With the new bushwhacker man i really want to go all in goblins. I think that might just be the thing to go with this archetype. Beat them before they can even blink. Haha.
Regarding the current buzz about the newly spoiled bushwhacker, Medrage's speed list becomes even more viable but serious testing is definitely needed. Goblins could possibly become the fastest aggro deck in modern.
Thanks for your quick replies. I currently run a mono-red no lords version. I really like the speed build but i am having doubts running it because it can easily be disrupted as we sacrifice consistency over speed.
That scg list is very unique. Not running vials and having playsets of wardriver, instigator, goblin king, and 3 rabblemaster as well. He went for a higher CMC build instead of the faster low CMC counterpart of the deck. To top it of, no token generators. Pretty interesting.
I just don't think the incremental life gain is better than two dudes from a sorcery. Also curious if Hordeling Outburst was better than Shared Animosity would have been looking back on it?
I personally, haven't tried animosity and i currently don't have them that's why i settled for hordeling outburst. I would like to test animosity as well once i am able to acquire some copies but as of my current deck form, it suits my play style well.
@Trapped and Franx, thanks for your replies. Yeah, the SB needs a lot of working out. I just acquired some combust and rending volley. I would try to buy some copies of torment, spree and blood moon next. I used to run a non-token mono red goblin shell but since changing the main deck to add token generators, i honestly felt that the deck became more consistent and more stable especially with a lot of board wipes around.
I just patched the SB for an unknown meta and since i am currently on a short budget, i just tried to make the best of what i can find.
Also, my deck is nearly identical with Mitchell Seymore's GPT Atlantic City Gobo Deck that won 1st place.
Here's my tourney report!
There were 14 players and the matches were divided into 4 rounds. I am completely new to the place and all the other players knew each other quite well. I wrote most that i can remember in between matches and pardon me if i can't remember all the details.
Round 1 Abzan (1-0)
Game 1 (1-0) On Play
I swarmed him right from the start with goblins and tokens. I dropped 2 Chieftains in this match and 2 tokens and 1 Mogg Fanatic but was stalled by a Scavenging Ooze. I was able to drop him to 3 life and here's the fun part : With 5 lands, he tapped 4 to cast siege rhino. I responded to play Lightning Bolt. He tapped his last land to activate scooze's ability and gain 1 life. I sac mogg fanatic in response. That was Game.
Game 2 (2-0) On Draw
T1 he cast Inquisition and he chose Guide was left with 3 lands, bushwhacker, chieftain, chieftain
T2 he fetched, cast tarmo for 3/4 i cast a token generator and passed
T3 he cast Scooze, i cast chieftain and passed
T4 he was stuck at three lands, i cast another chieftain and foundry
T5 no lands for him still, i cast a kicked bushwhacker swung for a total of 25 damage. his 3/4 tarmo blocked my 5/3 foundry I bolted his Scooze as well.
(Shake hands)
He showed me post game that he has a timely reinforcement and a kor firewalker in hand just wasn't able to cast them because he did not have any white mana source. Whew lucky.
Round 2 Genesis Wave (2-0)
Game 1 (1-0) On Play
Had a NUT DRAW: Played Foundry T1, Guide & loyalist T2, I swung for 4 damage T3 did not block with his arbor elf down to 10 life i played grenade, bolt, bolt FTW!
Game 2 (2-0) On Draw
A more challenging game i played Guide, Fodder, and Hordeling. Cant attack since he got a leatherback baloth on the field plus a burning tree shaman. He played Genesis Wave for 2 mana but was unable to combo out with craterhoof behemoth because he was not able to draw out nykthos. i dismembered his baloth during his turn, cast bushwhacker on my turn and swung 7 creatures. he was able to block 4. Then with 2 mana left, i played grenade and bolt to seal the match.
Round 3 Ad Nauseaum (3-0)
Game 1 (1-0) On Play
He won the die roll but he opted to draw. I swarmed him right from the start. I was able to deal lethal in turn 4 and 5 but 2 angel's grace saved him. Fortunately, he was unable to dig out Ad Nas during that span of time and he scooped. (Or he might have been able to get Ad Nas but he would still lose due to the draw damage effects of the spell.)
Game 2 (2-0) On Play
Same gameplan, i played full aggro mode since i need to kill him before Ad Nas becomes online. No blockers on the field, i killed him on turn 4, guide and revealed a non land card and before dying he tried to cast peer through depths, hoping to get an angel's grace and was unsuccessful. Note: angel's grace was the 6th card from the top of his library and if the guide trigger was a land he might have been saved. Again, lucky me.
Round 4 Mono G Stompy w/ mana ramp (3-1)
At this point in the match we were only the 2 players with 3-0 record so we fought for the tiebreak to determine 1st place.
Game 1 (1-0) On Draw
Denizen, Command, Hordeling, Goblin Chieftain. I tried to spread out more on this match since he's got bigger creatures than i am. Did not see the fatties in this game (e.g. thrun, leatherback baloth)
Game 2 (1-1) On Draw
I had a relatively good starting hand (denizen, guide, 2 lands, bolt, command, fodder) but the rest of the draws were mountains. Worse, as i was able to build my token army, he popped a ratchet bomb. He played utopia sprawl, arbor elf, 2 leatherback and thrun + rancor. Was able to dismember one baloth but i can't keep up trading with baloth + thrun w/ rancor.
Game 3 (1-2) On Play
Same SB. I kept a MEH hand of 4 lands, foundry, fanatic, bolt (I tried to be like the YUGIOH anime guy who believes in the power of the topdeck LOL) Should have mulliganed. He built presence with leatherback + rancor then t4 thrun which i cannot race out. I tried to cast hordeling and fodder in my turns as a last resort of defense but ratchet bomb made another appearance. I lost. Finished 2nd out of 14 players! (Not bad for a tourney newbie! :D)
Thoughts: The last game was the only time i had a very bad hand. It would be my very first tournament mulligan if i opted to. I was very lucky in this tournament and overall, i played to enjoy the moment but at the same time, i tried to give my best whenever possible. I had a lot of fun piloting the deck and i caught most people by surprise with goblin grenade + bolt out of nowhere or a kicked bushwhacker that swings the entire crew for 15+ damage. It was a great learning experience!
(P.S. i am now a level 4 Planeswalker in DCI)
