The problem I have with textless promos is that I don't like mixing textless nonfoil with foil cards.

Have any of you tried playing soul manipulation? I'm starting to consider jamming cruel again when I get two more snapcasters, and that looks like a way to take advantage of playing a full set of snapcaster mage.
Also, yeah, I need a few more multi-judge events, then I'm good to go; I have two big ones down and I'm scheduled to floor judge a pptq at the SCG game center in roanoake next month.

I hear you on that bolas; the devil for me is getting the "multi-judge" event requirement in. Got 96 and 92 on my practice tests, have all the other requirements.

Guys, I wouldn't go crazy about that IQ finish; a quick trip over to google maps followed by a quick city record building plans search tells me that that IQ couldn't possibly have had more than 30 folks show up (and that's pushing it) which means 2-1-1 could have put him in the top 8. Regular IQ's are not a super significant finish--Super IQ's and Elite IQ's have much greater regular participation and more rounds, so those results say a lot more, but for an IQ that small, it's as easy as playing against some budget brew round one, burning out a storm player round two after a quick piece of countermagic or two, losing to a tier one deck, and ID'ing into top 8, then losing in top 8.

technically, shouldn't discussion of the build chapin took go in the other grixis thread, the non-cruel grixis control thread? Or are we going to merge the threads to just "grixis control"?

Bloom is on the rise--spell snare is critical there. Spell snare is nuts against twin in conjunction with other removal. Spell snare hits all of the IMPORTANT burn spells-- we don't really care about bolts, lava spikes, and goblin guides, it's the cmc 2 utility burn spells that you really don't want resolving. Full set of spell snare is perfectly fine, as when it's bad it's easy to cut postboard.

Sorry about the bad run at the PPTQ. But, we are control players. Control the things you can. Not making dexterity errors (shuffling your opponents cards poorly, continuing to hold your "hand" in one hand while scrying with the other) is something we can control with practice and discipline, and so we should control them. We play control, so we end up making far more decisions than most people in a match, which means we should be more practiced at the self discipline of making the "correct" and "safe" choice each time, even if we're pretty sure nothing can really go wrong. If you culture the self discipline to play control, you have the self discipline to make the changes to avoid stupid mistakes (dexterity errors, decklist errors, failing to desideboard, etc).

I really question the "testing" that a lot of people do on cockatrice, in all threads, not just this one. It's been my experience that on cockatrice, 9/10 players aren't worth the time investment for testing purposes--opponents lack the tight play and good mulligan decisions of a tournament-caliber (GP day 2) player. I also see a ton of severely non-optimized lists all over the place on cockatrice.
In your collective experience, does cockatrice yield poor testing for you all, or am I being overly high in my expectations? I mostly play at a shop where I'm near the fewest GP day 2's in the room (only two myself, though granted I'm more likely to judge), but maybe this is unrealistic to expect that level of play from the general online populace at large?

I think a lot of that has to do with the tools cruel control has in modern at the moment, and also part of the reason it'll never really be a tier one deck--cruel control is a reactive control deck that lacks strong sweepers or sideboard hate, because it lacks white. Therefore, you're much more dependent on having access to the right types of utility in your 75 to win, and in an open field at a large event there's just too much diversity of decks for you to be prepared for everything. You pick the decks you want to beat, and the decks you want to lose to, and that's that. My dream would be to have the tools for any UBx control deck to be able to be a "50/50" deck the same way jund/junk are in the metagame, but that's just not going to happen with how scared R&D is of strong spells right now.

I'll have to double check how disrupting shoal works, but for reference Wear//tear flipped off of dark confidant is 3; I think fuse/dual faced cards count their combined mana cost when pitched to shoal.
Edit: NVM, you're golden--as long as any of the characteristics on either part of the card return a yes, the answer is yes, so when querying as to whether it's cmc 2 or 3, the answer is always yes, so when disrupting shoal queries for the CMC of your blue spell, it can see either 2 or 3 (but not 5).

I know the dude personally. Yes, he is, like most of us, an addict to cryptic command. He also has all of his vivids pimped out, because why not?
Most ridiculous singleton card in his deck--extirpate. There's an unbelievable number of games and matchups where you wish you could find ONE copy, never draw multiples, but always have the first one. Mystical teachings makes that possible. Yes, if you turn three blood moon him and he doesn't have charm/leak/abrupt decay/disenchant/whatever up, he does scoop it up. I've lost many games in the vivid control vs esper matchup to his mainboard extirpate cleaning out cryptics, esper charms, or path to exile.
And yes, he started playing during Lorowyn-alara standard, and yes, he plays a bastardized miracles list in legacy and an esper control build in standard.

That's like the grixis version of the fabiano sultai deck. Interesting. Too midrangey for my tastes, but interesting. I like recurring EE lock.

interesting approach... between those, bolts, snapcasters, and electrolyze, the bolt-snap-bolt finish seems much more realistic. Has anyone considered going more of a traditional UB "death of a thousand stings" style of build with cruel ultimatum as the finisher, not just the massive advantage engine?

25 lands is too few, you want at least 26, maybe 27. If you're going to run 4-of, rune snag cleanly beats out mana leak. I don't particularly like either but definitely snag>leak. I don't like dreadbore, if you want that effect I feel like you should split it with hero's downfall (instant speed). Kolaghan's command is good, maybe consier it over the second jace and a condescend, and cut the 2nd condescend for a 2nd spell snare. spell snare is crazy good.
