I just wanted to ask if any of you have heard anything about your LGS's plans for the release event. Everyone I know is excited for this, but the shops aren't really making a big deal out of this. So..
1. Are the shops I have talked to under-hyping these?
2. Or am I over-hyping - not realizing that no one else cares?
In particular guided passage seems pretty likely, given it looks like Baku of two reflections copies spells and plus its such a good multiplayer politics card.
Then they are laught at and people tell them to stop being stupid.
Also, it's common to say "Ok, you played Wrath, then I change my toped cards order" and just going with it. Seriously, only 1% of the plays people do change your order anyway. It's better to allow people to change their mind in this 1% case than to allow them to top EOT.
Yup. This is where table politics play into the game a lot. You waste my time, I make fun of you.
But really does it matter if these decks have Top in them or not? I guess it will drive the sales later, but is anyone buying them now because they think there will actually be Sol Rings or Tops in there?
I know I am buying them for 2 reasons. First, they look like FUN products. Second, I like to financially support a company when it makes a good move.
I was going to call sacrilege, but then I remembered that they already did that with Meddling Mage in Alara. I don't know how I feel about that.
It will need to have a picture of a naked flaming woman to overcome the card's nickname though. I haven't heard it called anything but Sad Robot in 2 years.
The reason top should really be banned is because it makes games drag on FOREVER and is virtually indestructible barring Krosan Grip and Stifle + Shatter effects. I hope we don't see it, because then every EDH game I play will take 3 hours to finish.
Lightning Greaves would be cool. It's been reprinted several times, but is still very high, and is a staple in most decks.
That is where social pressure factors in. If you are player #1 and at the end of player #4's turn you top, you will get made fun and ganged up on. There is making the theoretical "ideal move" and there is the ideal move. Being considerate of other peoples' time is usually the way to go.
Top might be there and it might not.... not really thinking it will, but also wouldn't be shocked if it were.
RRR in Wedge colored deck using a budget mana base? I suppose it could happen, but they want people to be able to play the cards they put in there. I suspect we won't see anything that intense.
It's a multiplayer format, these are multiplayer cards. I fail to see the problem.
As much as I think those cards are junk, I can see them in these decks too. Death by Dragons is already sort of like them. I hope they aren't printed just because they have always felt pretty weak, but they are a logical reprint if they wanted to find political multiplayer cards from the past.
Who cares, with the money you make selling the fetchland you can buy 98% of the rares that exist.
Some of us want a good product that we can actually play with. I have all the cards I need so with these I am looking for a well designed and well balanced set of decks. The financial value isn't the only value of these.
And it really doesn't matter because the idea of wasting rare slots on fetchlands seems so unlikely that.... wel, it's very unlikely.
We should start seeing previews in a week, yeah? Actually since next weekend is the release and they like to do a whole "here's the new set" week anyone else think we'll start seeing these things at Wizards on the 23rd?
1) It was originally printed at uncommon rarity. Same with Sol Ring
2) It has not since original printing been reprinted Just about with same with Sol Ring. Aside from the FTV... Top = 7 years. Sol Ring = 16 years since it was printed last.
3) The price jump on the card is due to its high use, not its scarcity or how old it is Same with Sol Ring
Edited... So why not the ring?
And technically, the high price is because of the scarcity, but that scarcity is because of a high demand less than a low print run.
I doubt they'll do too many of the expensive staples. They'd really throw a monkey wrench in supply etc and they'd have to worry about balancing all 5 of the decks or 1 of them would be the most sought out by far.
The best I'd hope for is seeing the Zendikar fetches in them. They could put one in each deck and then if you got all 5 you'd have the 5 you need for EDH. They also seem to like to put player favorites into things shortly before they rotate (see the numerous duel decks etc)
Another decent cycle they could easily split amongst the decks is the ultimatums but I doubt those are going to really push people to buy the decks.
The Ultimatums are Allied tri-color, not Wedge so they won't have those. But, something like that could be done for sure - although with budget landbases that will be tough to pull off.
I am more hopeful for the Guided Passage "cycle" from Apocalypse in new borders. That would be really cool.
Online retailers are doing that in droves already, not really a big deal.
Really? Where? Starcity WAS doing "buy 4 get 1 free" and that was a pretty good deal at the time. Minituremarket was at $95 for all 5, but that deal vanished.
I should add one more important thing: oversized generals are being distributed at a 1:1 ratio with the regularly sized generals. So having an oversized general is about as pimp as Shia LeBeouf.
That's pretty much my thought... except Shia LaBeouf before he came in physical contact with Megan Fox.
Personally don't care much about the deck boxes, oversized generals was, imo, a stupid idea. They don't add any functionality and they're a hassle to carry around. They probably make your deck worse by being more psychologically imposing, too. So fine, europe, keep your stupid deck boxes! I don't even care!
Still, though, I'm curious where this info is coming from, if it's legit.
Agree. I like my deck boxes being only slightly larger than my decks. The idea of lugging these stupid things around sounds silly. I'm going to dump the oversized cards the day I get them and then just have the 5 decks in a big dumb cheap cardboard box. Practical solution to picking up 500 new cards.

I hope so. Aside from Guided Passage none of them are particularly good in EDH, but they are cool and do sorta fun things. I want to see the //gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&name=+[//">||type=+[//]||subtype=+[//]||text=+[//]&format=|[%22Ravnica%20Block%22]"]Guildpact Split cards too are the only other wedge cards they have printed and a few of them are really awesome.

In the case of EDH I am excited that they are finally acknowledging that it's kinda a big deal now.

Yeah. It was really screwed up and made WotC look like they were running around with their heads cut off. Everyone here complained a lot
Or he meant August.
And, I think that kind of preview schedule makes sense, but with all the new cards they could drag it our for a lot longer so who knows?
