I think EDH is a shop by shop basis on hype. We have several LGS in the Twin Cities and only 2 of them have an EDH day. One is well attended, the other is a group of people who just are always there anyway so they might as well make it an EDH day.
Well my thought is that they have 5 decks. Each day will focus on one of those decks and will give us tips, play guides, and spoilers. Seems like the logical way to do it. It's different than other products though since we have new cards to deal with. So who knows, maybe some EDH themed articles like "This card is in this precon, but look what happens when you put it in my awesome Zur deck..."
Actually for any "non block" product, this is pretty standard process. They didn't give us decklists for Archenemy or Planechase much eariler... and Dual Decks usually aren't known unless a gunslinger brings them to a big event. Look at NPH Event Decks... we haven't seen anything on them either, and likely won't until the week it comes out.
Just as an FYI, official previews start June 6th according to Daily MTG's Twitter. So only a week, but I'm sure each deck will be featured heavily on their own day.
While I agree... those "spikey" tournament level EDH decks have also thought of this. They blow up your lands, take extra turns, counter your threats, or even worse... sit back and let everyone fight over who has the biggest threat on the board and wait till everyone is tapped out to drop everything in one turn.
And yes Chromatone... I've seen all kinds of fast kill combos at large prize events for EDH... it's just the Top ones that clear the table the quickest.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to play EDH... but to say that it's as easy as killing a threat in "tournament level EDH" is assuming that they aren't prepared for you to do so. Remember, the Storm EDH decks all run blue...
The reason top should really be banned is because it makes games drag on FOREVER and is virtually indestructible barring Krosan Grip and Stifle + Shatter effects. I hope we don't see it, because then every EDH game I play will take 3 hours to finish.
Lightning Greaves would be cool. It's been reprinted several times, but is still very high, and is a staple in most decks.
Actually the reason why it should be banned is because if Commander brings on tournaments more often, all you're going to see is Top/Etherium Sculptor/Future Sight storm combo decks that whipe the whole table. Every "large" event I've ever played has had these stupid things flying around. Sometimes winning as fast as turn 4-5 as well.
I'd REALLY like to see Simulacrum in every box. I'm guessing Top is out of the question, but stuff like new border Defense of the Heart, Future Sight, Karmic Guide, and Aura Shards isn't! Come on Wizards! Give us some cheddar!!
I think many of your suggestions are right on the money. This is the type of thing we'll see... Shocklands, likely not. Simply because it's going to be 3 slots in each deck. If anything I think they'd do enemy Lairs, enemy Alara lands, maybe some kind of artifact that taps for all three at some stupid cost... but I could see signets or karoo lands for sure. 3 common slots are easier taken than rare or uncommon.
There was a podcast posted on the main site a few weeks ago from pro Tour London... from a member of the rules commitee that has seen the sets... he basically said that it's not TOTALLY for n00bs, but it's a way to gateway into the format. This being said, he also said that EDH was not a great way for someone to learn Magic... but I think what we can take from this is that there won't be any super OMG reprint cards in this set. Outside of the "new" cards, we really can't get our hopes up too heavily here.
I honestly wouldn't expect anything until 1-2 weeks before release. Maybe one or two things via Twitter or Facebook... but they are going to spend the next couple of weeks talking about NPH and design stories etc...
Granted, we've never quite had a "new" product quite like this... but I don't see why we should expect anything other than what we'd normally have with Duel decks or sets like Planechase.
I honestly don't think we're going to see any fetches here... I really wish people would be a little more realistic. The draw is going to be in the "new" cards, and maybe one or two "nifty" surprises in the reprints. But nothing so cut and dry like a fetch. These products are made to introduce people to a format, and then let them add the "goods" later.
For the price, I would certainly HOPE that we're going to see some powerful stuff... but I'm thinking we'll see them in the new cards to draw in those of us who are established in EDH already. Functional reprints that are reworded to include "each player" as opposed to "target player."
I agree ISB... I think we'll be lucky to see one (maybee two) rare slots for land in each... and you can bet Exotic Orchard is one of them. But if they give us "good" uncommon options, I'll be a-okay...
Nano... I think you're dead on... Top and Sol Ring in FTV gives them an out and they know they could "avoid" printing them here. Besides, I doubt we'll see many repreats from deck to deck... I see things like Signets and Tallismans... where they can avoid copying the other decks identically, but still give a similar feel.
Outrageous? Not when it's what they've been doing all along... "Expected, but disapointing" is more like it.
