No, you can't. The challenge wants them to be separate. The goal is to abstractly simulate a return block with old and new mechanics that work together. It's atypical for those mechanics to be on the same card, yet alone twice. And this month is about inter-card synergy. Your idea defeats the point.
For the current round, I guess I can mix and match my keywords between the cards as I'd like? I can create two cards and both have both keywords?
For your two cards they can both be keyword abilities, both be ability words, or one can be a keyword and the other an ability word. Does that answer your question?

I guess a good question to ask is when does a round technically close? When the host posts and says the round is closed or when the time on the first post in the round states?
IMO it's the posted deadline unless the host posts otherwise saying that there is going to be a delay and they won't get to it at the posted time. That's how I've run it as an organizer and how I judge.
You're correct that everyone here should try to foster a fun and friendly environment, but you have to realize that it is not fun for someone who stayed up beyond their normal bedtime to ensure they got their card in by the deadline only to find out that someone else was allowed to post their card much later. I understand that you have not done this, but your post implies that you plan for the host not to close the round at the exact time they say they're going to. Please forgive me if I'm somehow misinterpreted your post.
The scenario you present doesn't make any sense.
Except it totally does becasue that would of been the exact scenario if I was right about it being EST. I worked untill the exact time I thought was the deadline, you had work past it when I had stayed up explicit to try and get it done. It's unfun and unfair to me if someone gets to take extra time past a posted deadline when I work hard to meet it.
As I already admitted, I was wrong about the timing. But the scenario is not unrealistic or nonsensical at all.
"Getting your card done before you go to sleep" is a pretty good rule of thumb to go by
Actually its not.
Presumably we're all adults aged 15-75, who live in various places, with various schedules.
Which is the problem with "getting your card done before you go to sleep."
Since you've only been here 9 months, let me tell you a story. Not all that long ago, in a contest called the DCC, they did exactly as you proposed. People would post cards throught out the day, and the organizer would at some point close it based on their schedule and time zone difference. There were even times when the same organizer would close it at largely different times. There were times when it would close late in the morning the following day, and times when it would close before they day had had passed. At least from my timezone, as perhaps a European friend has decided to close it when they woke up for work in the morning, shutting the days entries down well before midnight my time. Or yours. This made it so many times people would get their entries cut off. They thought they had more time because the day before it closed at a completely different time. Perhaps it even closed before they day was over for them! It made people sad and upset, and botched close races. It was even discussed in the threads. It became clear to the organizers at the time that they needed to be more consistent with their timing.
None of that was hypothetical. I've had it happen, and you can ask long time DCC people and many if not all of them have probably had a time where they didnt post before the organizer unexpectedly closed it. It doesn't feel good or fun. That's why we have deadlines, as a way to say "Anything you post after this time isn't protected from being late!"
So that leaves the CCL deadlines as to how a judge wants to go about it. If you personally feel that it should be more lax, continue to judge that way. I don't and I judge accordingly. Because without adhering to deadlines other unfun things happen.
It's alarming that he insists it's "his right as a judge" to disqualify entries on these grounds because that means he could do it again in the future.
Are you suggesting the a judge isn't allowed to decide whether an entry followed the rules or not? What's "alarming" isn't my attitude on time, it's your entitlement to that idea that you should be allowed to do things later. Whether we are talking about real life work or a any casual game that has a timer, why is it fair that you or someone else get extra time when everyone else did it by the rules? So you can finish your workout?
I'm not discussing my score, and I'm typing in English so I don't know what the problem is. I understand that my entry was not perfect. I am, however, deeply concerned that I will be unable to participate in any event in which IcariiFA is participating.
Stop insulting everyone with quips about "typing in English." You're being overly dramatic with your concerns.
You had 5-6 days to work on it. You can finish it any one of those days. You can also post and say "hey I need more time" and in the super majority of cases, organizers will give you an extension. When someone has posted asking for an extension when I've hosted, I've granted it. That's including when you asked me when I hosted in January. So complaining about the POTENTIAL for someone to penalize you for being late is both moot and overly anxious. If someone chooses to penalize you because you are late, it's their right as judge. If they don't care, they don't care.
Trying to disqualify people for petty reasons does nothing to foster a positive atmosphere on this forum and does nothing to make people want to participate. It's not a big deal if someone submits something at 1 AM ET or whatever. I always workout from 11-12 during which time I think of designs, so usually I get home, eat something, and jot down what I was thinking about at the gym. People have different schedules.[/spoiler]
Disqualifying people for being late isn't petty, nor is the fact you have a real life schedule an excuse. We all do. If you have something in your schedule that makes it so you can't work on the project at the last minute, you do it before your scheduling conflict, not after. It is totally reasonable and within my right when judging to doc points or disqualify people when late, especially in a position where I make a point of working till the last minute available to me and then stop at the deadline. When someone else takes extra time and I did not, it's unfair and I'll treat it that way when judging.
Now in your case, you were right that you weren't late. I still judged your mechanic and cards for their merits but like I said I felt my top 3 was still correct. I wasn't the only judge who put you last either. There have been plenty of times in the CCL and MCC were I've judged your work and given you good ranking/scores. This time you just lost out.
I wasn’t aware that there was a “standard” time zone for the contests.
What is it, and where is that documented?
PST has been used for the CCL for almost two months now, and this seems to be the first time it’s being mentioned.
Almost two months you say? That's a short time. You did it this month and kjsharp last month. By "standard" I meant "most often used", not "codified into the rules." Out of all of 2017, only 1 single month wasn't based on EST, and January (my) month of this year was EST too. All other timezones are outliers currently. While you're not required to use a specific timezone, what I said was not wrong.
Well, you are right on one count. Cardz5000 did do PST, which is non standard for these contest. Regardless, I still feel your mechanic/entry is overall the weakest as it is the least fun to play with. So I'll edit my critique, but the places wont change.
|Katamari|: Side note: I really dislike when someone feels the need to explain their designs. If you feel you have to explain it, its a sign that it doesn't stand up well on its own.
My goal was to answer preventively to the question: does this mess up with other cards with ice counters? I could have used other counters but it seemed fine to use something already existing
You didn't need to explain that. It's a given. Explaining your design process for people to consider when judging I see to be poor form/covering weaker design. Why? Because the goal of our designs is to be of a quality that can be opened in a magic booster/product. Are you going to be standing next to everyone as they open up your designs? Of course not. The designs have to be understood on their own. Which is why I detest explanations. Let us judge without an explanation because if you were a real designer, you wouldn't get the chance to explain them to the consumer.

Congrats to you all, and with no disrespect to those moving forward, may the rest of the rounds be decided on scores.
