Slivers will be a one-off of M14, a "returning mechanic" as they say in R&D. They're just a test subject for some new fuel to an old theme injected into a modern set (a Core Set) where they can be free to design whatever they want and not have to worry about setting.
The same is true of Exalted, Bloodthirst, and Scry.
Yes, a mechanic doesn't have to be a keyword.

Um, that's just silly. Everyone knows the sliver's mantis like claw. People are really weird about his kind of stuff. They personalize it way to much and it happens when any modifications are made to a preexisting archtype.
No one knows that, Slivers adapt to the things around them. We do not actually know what they look like.

Few here have hated the idea of different Slivers. We just hate and despise these "Slivers" because they throw out everything Slivers used to be visually.
It's like having a fluffy bunny with flippers who breathes fire and putting "Vampire" on the type line. No, really, it's a Vampire, it has lifelink and flying, please buy this crock.
What slivers used to be visually are the same thing as these new ones. We saw creatures that changed according to their surroundings. get used to change people.

I've always had a disdain for flavor writing and backstories. Its too easy to wave a hand, say wizards did it and bridge any gaps. If half the people in this thread put forth a speculation about "why do sliver look humanoid now", wizards could pick one at random and fly with it.
Its definitely a case where story design follows art/game design, they wanted humanoid slivers, and the backstory will only be a crutch to serve that end. Reminds me of bradywalkers again
The story existed before this announcement.

If they wanted to do something like this in a more modern formatting, why not do allies? They do need more support and they fit the current formatting instead of defiling slivers.
plus they have eyes...
Because slivers will sell more packs.

As the majority seem to be saying in this thread: "The art direction for these slivers has gone too far in favor of selling packs and not far enough in resembling previous slivers. I understand adding to them for more evolutionary directions but they should have stayed distinctively un-humanoid".
These things are sliver in name and effect, but not in appearance.
The thing is, we don't know what actual slivers look like. The previous ones we've seen are just them adapting to what is around them.

Seriously dude, I see you in every thread making up your own fanfic that justifies the changes. Good for you if you can come up with a reason to explain stuff but you're not wotc and your explanations aren't canon or very satisfying. It's the equivalent of "it was all a dream/time travel/etc", I don't care what your lame excuses for mechanics are. Slivers have worked a certain way since 1997 and your little tidbit about "hives", while plausible, is not important.
Generally, WOTC doesn't do things without reasonable explanation. What happened to slivers was simply a flavor change. That was the point. Having an opinion is a different discussion.

Nobody will take you seriously if you don't give a reason.
Slivers adapt to their surroundings, it makes sense flavor wise, but not for hellions.
Yet you give no reason why.
No one knows that, Slivers adapt to the things around them. We do not actually know what they look like.
Source? they did adapt at one time to become the best species they can be. Slivers did the same thing.
Yes, but the story that they change according to their surroundings has existed for a long time before they even started planning M14.
Most likely we'll see another single multicolored card, probably a 5 color legendary sliver.

There is already, and there is a backround story as to why they looked the way they did before. Slivers adapt to their surroundings.
Because slivers will sell more packs.

Most people get it, just disagree with it.
