Anyone else get the feeling modern is turning less into "Which pro/team do you like?" And more into "Cheer for your favorite sports team, aka Archetypes?"
Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but hasn't it always been that way? I can't recall ever seeing someone cheering for someone they like who was playing a deck they hated. I always felt people gravitated far more towards decks than players. I like Dickmann, but I can't help but root against him because I hate his deck. I haven't heard of most of these Merfolk players, but I'm on their side because they're playing Merfolk. Was I in the minority on that?
Though keep in mind, as Chapin has been trying to push all weekend, "you should play what you know." Aggro players tend to keep playing aggro, Zoo players keep playing Zoo, combo players keep playing combo. So if you like a deck, you start to like the players playing it, and then you'll likely continue to like the decks those players are playing because they usually keep with similarly themed decks because that's the kind of player they are.
Right, but I think thats because the pros learned that lesson the hard way during the pro tour. They got slapped around and the super teams were even made fun of by alot of the modern community and online. I really think they were shocked to find out they were doing it wrong, and this even shows clearly they are reversing their thoughts.
I mean, the modern community had it right from the beginning, even here on mtgsal. If I wanna test against Hatebears I hit up Dol. If I want to test against Tokens, I talk to jango. If I have a question about 8 rack, I talk to memory lapse. When ever people want to know how to play, whats good against, or test against zoo, they ask me.
Thats really how it should be.
ANd I think smart modern players get that, and probably got it from the get go. But, alot of other viewers for a lonnnngggg time would cheer AGANST the boogie man. Storm, then Zoo, then Jund. And for a tad (And maybe still going) Pod and twin.
I think the pros have taken a chance now to try to undo something (arguably they started by not playing "Their" decks and trying to find the next caw blade every time.) and preach diversity.
Also I hope they do deck lists for 32 and up. All those guys get protour invites, so it would be nice to get their names out there for them and lists out there for us. And with SOOOO many players, realistically, the difference between 32 and 16 is not wins/loses but who they lost to and how well they did.

"Cursecatcher is a terrible card in Modern" Those...those are some words. Those are some STRONG words. I always had this feeling(which is why I always played Cosi's over it), but I didn't think I'd hear a pro agree with that since it's been a pretty unpopular opinion in the merfolk thread.
I'm not sure hes a pro to be honest with you, but Ive agreed to that for a long time. I also played trickster.
I am so on top of things. Why didn't I win best mod this year. Tisk tisk.
Thats why that affinity guy is topping. He's a smart aggro player, I can smell it. He was counting damage turns ahead, doing everything to maximize his output. He's willing to take risks against a combo deck, which is a bad matchup. He's got guts, and is playing smart. I like.
How is Affinity doing so well when there are so many hate cards for this deck?
People dropped artifact hate for enchantment hate and Zoo hate. Affinity is a turn faster than zoo, but less stable to hate because of artifact kill cards. There is a distinct lack of it. Recall is good when its to buy you a turn and thats it. With Combo, its hopeful to buy a turn and win. against control its buy a turn into cryptic, wrath mana.
Recall to try to survive is not good. Recall is a soft hate card, not a permeant hate card.

Also I did the math for my zoo thread, .23% (rounded up) is one person in day 2. Meaning 8 rax got 6 players into day 2.
