Keep in mind distributors and stores have a relationship that can vary in quality. Depending on the situation, he could be getting hosed hardcore and the product is funneled elsewhere, or the owners simply favor standard and are trying to push core 2020 out the door. Believe me, that set needs all the help it can get right now because it went off allocation super early and it still isn't selling well. I'm just waiting for people to start beating the drum that core sets are bad when the same situation happened with every summer set ever printed, regardless if it was a core set or not.

Not sure what people are saying about supply being constrained on modern horizons. It seems like it is in stock at distributors.

Before people jump on wrenn and styx, keep in mind the reason the price of the singles are outpacing the boxes is due to skittishness on distributors who are tired of wotc shoveling so much product at them during the summer.
The situation is like pre 2013 magic singles, which just cant hold. Either the box price goes up or the cards come down from mass opening.
The box EV is 20 dollars below ultimate masters without the box topper.

I've started to realize that spending money chasing the hype cards is a bad plan in general. Watched a seminar on hook, habit, hobby marketing strategies and realized that most of this is psychological manipulation.
The big problem is the company went full EA on the community post modern masters 2 and decided they can create artificially high prices by setting a high box price, and now they are going into making special mythic edition super limited print run boxes. I'm genuinely afraid of where the game is going.
They even introduced an arena season pass now to get the hooks in deeper on arena.

Yeah, who thought Narset would be the star of the set. No one blinked an eye when she was spoiled. Definitely missed that boat. She's being played in all major formats.
There was lots of talk about her almost immediately at my LGS. But we have a lot of various blue cantrip decks, and many who also play cantrip-heavy Legacy decks, so she seemed like a hit from the getgo. We all saw that it would hose our decks and be great in the mirrors.
I'm just happy she's an uncommon, so she is dirt cheap and widely available.
Hmm, asking since I'm not sure what to do..
Are the jap alternate art walkers a limited thing. Or are they eventually going to flood the market? If they are going to be limited in print, I'm getting one now. But will wait if the print run would be large. Thanks.
The problem is the availability of the boxes. I think they had a printing snafu from the new card stock getting introduced and they didn't get the Japanese boxes out on the first wave. The next wave is on the newer stock.

My fear right now is that wizards is changing the innovation sets into the masters sets. Modern Horizons is really a test to see what happens to the market when old cards that are good, but not modern legal, get introduced into modern through a format other than standard. I suspect anything reprinted from the olden days into modern that is actually on the level will increase dramatically due to the sudden surge of demand. Heck, I got a feeling modern will get really pricey for at least a few months after horizons hits even if modern horizons isn't that great of a set.
Imagine what happens next year if they do something like Battlebond 2, only they price it at the price of modern horizons and throw enemy fetchlands in.

The WAR situation is a bit of a mess, but not so much in a way that is obvious to the average buyer. It seems that the distributors either didn't order enough product and then got caught in a bad situation, or wizards withheld product to improve early reception and keep box sales moving at a steady clip. The result is a lot of smaller stores didn't get their full allocations since the distributors favor the people with the largest scale orders. That means places like CFB, CK, SCG, and Sports and More got a lot of product and everyone else got less.
Then on top of this, there is the problem with the Mythic Edition sales on Ebay plus the company wants to do a special Japanese card promotion, which means having to dedicate resources to not only print english boxes, but Japanese boxes of the same set. Then they are also releasing the Japanese promotional walkers at a rate of 1/4 prize packs.
War of the Spark is probably going to get opened even more than Dominaria thanks to the theme and power of the set, resulting in an implosion of the card values in the set and an inflation of all the shocklands as people rush to get their mana bases sorted. Guilds of Ravnica and Allegiance are no longer going to be drafted heavily, leaving a limited supply of shocklands on the table.
Meanwhile, all the checklands are rotating soon, and Sulfur Falls got a 3 of spot in the UR Tempo decks. If someone wants to get the best bang for their buck, just get UR tempo. It comes with a Phoenix, three sulfur falls, and a bunch of other decent cards at a good price. There's still one lingering at my Target that I am probably going to go get while every timmy is blowing money on WAR.
Also, Rivals and Ixalan are being powered by EDH at the moment and are mostly forgotten. If you have anything you want from there I'd grab them when you have the chance. Core 2019 was dismally opened as well and a lot of the modern playable sideboard cards are dirt cheap. All the money is stuck in Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, which is going to plummet in value once rotation hits to probably 10-15 dollars before going up again due to EDH.
Dominaria got opened so much the prices are depressed heavily on the singles. I wouldn't take the price as any indication of lack of playability. We're talking Kahns of Tarkir 2.0 due to Teferi and Karn soaking up dollar value.

The london mulligan will make combo a lot more consistent, but it also makes it so that the opponent can line up answers better as well. The main thing I've seen online is that people who are not used to the rule will keep hands that are not fit for the match.

Blackcleave Cliffs and Verdant Catacombs are some of the main cards I'd like to pick up soon. I have 2 Blackcleave cliffs so far but no immediate need for them (I have Mardu pyro together but no intention of playing). I would like the Catacombs for 4c shadow every so often. Although I wouldn't mind playing Junk/Jund sometimes so both might be good
is now a good time to get either or can anyone see them dropping anytime soon?
It's best not to think about the end of tomorrow, but in terms of two years. What do you think the possibility is in two years time they are reprinting Blackcleave Cliffs and Verdant Catacombs? Given how things worked last time they brought in shock lands they had the fast lands adjacent to the shocks. The only other possibilities that could be adjacent to shocks are Temples, pain lands, and filter lands.

Ah no, not in a rush. Just want to test a copy or two in my Mardu Pyro, since it looks like a really good card.
As money is low right now, would just wait for the price to settle down as well.
This set is going so strong that I'm expecting it to end up like dominaria on the box EV. Just wait for June after modern horizons. They are probably going to be drafting this at GP Vegas as well.
I've been picking up Rishadan Port, sanctum prelate, and other cards that look like they will go up a lot if introduced to modern. If they include containment priest I'd be surprised as it was just printed, unless they wanted to soften the card price due to it only being in the old commander decks.

Why didnt wizards print Modern Masters 2019?
Thats so stupid of them imo
They could sell modern staples at $10 per piece of paper
Now players complain and counterfeiters get a free season of printing Jace, Opal, Liliana, fetches and so on
I think horizons will bring them more money than another masters set easily. If even 2 new cards are staples in modern that’ll be enough to sell tons of packs as it’s the only way to get them.
i dunno, i dont think there is enough information about production costs to make this assumption. choosing a set of reprints-only adhering to some theme seems quite a bit easier than designing entirely new cards and testing them. horizons will cost more than standard sets with a premium attached, but still falls short of the ludicrous margins masters had despite (or maybe because) of their 'limited print' nature.
as for the original question, the simple and reductive answer is that the masters series wasnt sustainable. too many competing interests, and the product either had to adapt or move aside for something new.
They're bringing it back. Wizards of the Coast has a very predictable pattern with how they do things: Find a successful something, and then do it until people are so sick of it that they start turning into raving lunatics on social media and have to cart out some new popular voice of reason to tell everyone they are fixing things. Then they "fix magic" and proceed to run the new direction into the ground.
There is just too much untapped potential in modern and commander cards to not cash in on it. They are just making a strategic retreat to let the market settle down and recover from the insanity printing levels they did the last few years.

Went to shop online for some Grim Flayers to add to my sultai deck, then discovered they have dipped. Some months ago it was 7-8 dollars each, that was after trophy got spoiled. Then today, they're just 3-4 dollars each... I guess since goyf is cheap, the budget goyf alternatives also become cheaper.
Modern is extremely hot right now and I think it's going to get extremely turbulent in the next two. I've actually put my buy list on cards for enhancing my death and taxes list with legacy cards viable for reprint that will definitely stabilize higher than they are at now. I'm thinking they may go cleric and angel tribal on this one off set to print both sanctum prelate and containment priest into modern. Prelate is a nightmare for a format with a compressed mana curve.
Err... on prices, I think modern is a sellers market and will be so for the next six months.

The entire market for magic is going to go up. Also, still going to be about the fetchlands as far as modern goes given that everyone was sitting around doing absolutely nothing with Kahns, and now the gambler tax is finally increasing the prices on the boxes.
Right now this market is a sellers market. I'm just dodging bullets left and right and sitting on my mox opal / Engineered Explosive goodness for a bit. I'm anticipating Modern Horizons is going to cause prices to spike even harder.
