Heading to the last GPT this sunday, before going to GP Copenhagen in the end of this month.
I'm coming back with an update after this sunday on how it went.
Mostly because I've been adjusting away from RW Prison lately. The rise of UW Control and Storm has made this a tricky deck to run successfully lately. It's not terrible, but I'm not running it on MTGO much lately. In paper UW Control and Storm are less of a thing (at least around here).
I'm waffling on this for SCG Baltimore later this month; I feel like it could fall flat.
Walked> Isn't 4 Rugged Prairie a bit too much? I hate to get them without having a coloured mana. Or when facing some random land-destruction cards that kill our basics so that we just have colorless.
Have you tried playing around with maybe 1-2 Inspiring Vantage?
Your list looks alot like mine, and I like it alot!
I'm also eager to try out the new Cast Out instead of O-Ring/Banishing Light. It seems really good.
I'm also playing my Leylines in the sideboard, but it seems people here have different experiences of how much duty they do us in the mainboard.
No; I like 4 Rugged Prairie. It's a painless way to get on-color mana, and its extremely rare that it color screws me. When we land the blood moon it becomes a mountain anyways. The reason I want that instead of a fastland like Vantage is post-moon it comes in tapped (and shocks similarly come in tapped or cost us life). I find with virtually all of our sources being colored, the Rugged Prairie as a 4-of doesn't hurt anything.
(Personal opinion at least; obviously there are corner cases and times when someone is going to spreading seas screw us; but its rather rare)

Came to post this. This matches pretty closely with my draft list on Page 57 (no Ajani; adding new Gideon). Cast Out made the list; which the more I think on (and the more I draft Amonkhet) the more I think it is a good fit.
I like Cast Out. I'm not 100% certain on it's place as its a tad bit slow; but that's not normally a big deal.
I'm going to be doing some testing this week with new builds and hopefully be able to put down some numbers. UW Control seems to be on the upswing, and thats a bad matchup, so I'm slightly concerned about that going forward.
I'm going to be bringing Glorious End to my Modern testing group tonight. Unfortunately, my gut says its too narrow (only viable when we have Gideon on board and are confident we can keep him alive and/or when we have a wincon ready next turn).
Heart of Kiran I like in concept, but I think it may be too diluting on our gameplan.
Alright guys & girls. This is what I'm playing around with currently
Seems pretty good in the current meta, and I've currently tried it against the following decks with good results:
Valakut Combo
Eldrazi Tron
Grixis Delver
Death's Shadow
Affinity
This is very close to the list I am working with right now. The only notable change is -1 Alliance, +1 Wrath, and + 1 Plains, - 1 Sacred Foundry, as being short a W source post-moon sucks.
I'm still up in the air about mainboard Leyline, but very much on the same page as you overall.
How are your thoughts when running with so many Chandra, Torch of Defiance? I mean, with Emrakul being in the deck... not really great to find it at the top of the deck, only to get it exiled :/
Currently I'm playing out with only 1 Chandra, 4 Nahiri, 2 Gideon Jura and 2 Ajani Vengeant. I'm gonna change the 2 Gideon for the new one, but still I'm unsure if we are missing something, or need something more for a regular win?
I run 4 Nahiri, 3 Chandra, 3 gideon of the trials. Chandra is our red JTMS and accomplishes similar goals, I think it's a mistake to run less than 3. It sucks to exile Emrakul, but thankfully he's not our only wincon. I feel like I win almost as often through her ult as I do Nahiri.
I think jura just doesn't cut it anymore. If we're using him to deal with decks that go wide I'd rather have another sweeper. If we're using him to handle 1 or 2 big attackers I'd prefer his 3 mana version, and ditto if we want the clock he provides. I'm torn on Vengeant but i think his days are done. His +1 is strictly worse than 3cmc gids, the -2 helix is decent but the starting loyalty means you really don't get to use it more than once. The ult is gamewinning but too slow. If i were you i' d cut jura and ajani for more copies of Chandra and Gideon of the trials
I'm finding myself in the same train of thought myself. Ajani is nice; but rarely is the -2 Helix the difference between the win or loss; and it SUCKS to have to hold on to him until my opponent swings with something before I can effectively use his +1.
Jura is good; but I think bringing the mana curve down a step is better. I do like a 1-of because he can come down if they remove little gideon and immediate +2 and is then REALLY tough to remove.
I'm still 50/50 on dropping the Nahiri package in favor of Ensnaring Bridge, though. Being able to lock people from most 1 cmc spells or attacking Gideon + Emblem is a tough nut to crack. But she provides such a good clock I dont think I can bring myself to drop it.
So; small sample sizes here, but what I'm finding with new Gideon:
- Powerhouse on curve.
- Not very good if you're on your back foot; he doesnt do much to stabilize the game unless your opponent is focused on going tall.
He tested surprisingly well in a bridge build, though. Because what you lose the ability to swing with his 4/4 mode, you make it very, very hard for your opponent to deal with the bridge and the emblem; between fogging any creatures that might be able to go under the bridge and forcing them to answer both him and the bridge before combat damage is relevant is a big swing.
Would anyone be interested in some cockatrice playtesting? I'm happy to pilot other Tier 1 decks if someone will do the same. I'm trying to nail down a build for the next SCG Open; and I'd like to start testing some pieces from Amonkhet which is hard to do on MODO.
Do we have any consistent wincons in a RW Planeswalkerlist with maindeck Bridge? I mean, even if we play Nahiri, we can't really go combat with Emrakul or Gideon :/
Chandra / Ajani / Lightning Helix are the big ones that dont require us to swing.
I'm considering a bridge Planeswalker build with new Gideon with the ultimate goal of firing Chandra to close the game out; but I'm concerned thats just too slow of a clock.
If this meta breakdown / trending continues in the next month or so, paired with the release of New Gideon - I think Sun and Moon is REALLY well positioned.
I'm going to the SCG Baltimore in May; and I'm increasingly thinking S&M is the way to go. (I also have Eldrazi / Death's Shadow on standby just in case)
Hi everyone, just wanted to share an article on control decks in Modern. I included RW Prison, because I feel the deck can be tooled to be playable in almost any metagame context. Check it out here, and let me know what you think!
Hey man; I'm the guy from Third Eye typically rocking sun and moon. Pretty good article; keep it up.

I think Rest in Peace is still a winner; the frequency it nonbos your Emrakul is pretty minor, and when it's good its great.

This is what I'm eyeballing right now. Still feel like it needs some tweaking, though. Feels a slight bit light on removal.

Simian Spirit Guide Beats
Chandra shock to death; maybe even an emblem!
Nahiri / Emmy
Lightning Helix to face
Maybe there is some merit to a 1-of Needle Spires too; and I'll certainly be keeping a 1-of Gideon Jura.
I'm finding myself in the same train of thought myself. Ajani is nice; but rarely is the -2 Helix the difference between the win or loss; and it SUCKS to have to hold on to him until my opponent swings with something before I can effectively use his +1.

Seems fragile, but also potentially super awesome in the prison shell.

Send me a PM if so.
