The results for the modern event at SCG Richmond is missing a decklist. A friend of mine made top 8 with jund and was DQ'd for wagering because someone had joked that if he won he would have to buy everyone dinner. At the time he was crushing elves in the top 8. Here's his list.
Wow, really? That sucks.
Kinda ridiculous that something like that can get you DQ. Anyway that explains why there are only 15 decks listed and I like the list from your friend. I prefer Olivia Voldaren over Huntmaster of the Fells too.
Definitely not on an entire meta-game wide scale. Something that people should be keep it mind is that BG/x rarely had any competition at being a fair and highly disruptive deck but now with Grixis Control on the map people do have an alternative to Jund/Abzan if they want to play such a style of deck and no Liliana of the Veils and Tarmogoyfs means the deck is more affordable despite the last price surge of Snapcaster Mage
Top 32 for SCG Chicago is up! 248 players attended the event which was held nowhere near "Chicago" so that number probably should have been higher. This is the first large American Modern event where Origins has been legal, so I tried to highlight Origins cards that got used. Let me know if I missed any!
So, it's been 3 weeks since the SCG Premier IQ. Any predictions for the top 8? I'm going to predict 8 Jund.
Looks fine to me.
I mean we still have room until we hit 30% of the meta again and our Standard Abzan brothers were over 30% of the Day 2 meta at the latest SCG Event.
Looking at these results it looks like Grixis Control is the big winner here putting three copies in the Top 16. That doesn't come as a surprise to me since I think it's the strongest Grixis deck becaue it utilizes the potential of the cards better than Twin and Delver can do.
Other than that Jund put two copies in the Top 8 and Scapeshift managed its way into another Top 8 which is good to see considering the huge fall that the deck had. I guess a reduction of Aggro is certainly helpful for the the deck.
One thing I noticed from all the Jund decks in that top 32 is that none of them play Tectonic Edge. Is this a card that has just fallen out of favor from the Modern meta entirely? Is this because Celestial Colonnade Control decks are no longer prevalent in the meta? Or is there another reason? I'm looking to cut mine from my Abzan Midrange deck because it just screws with my mana too much.
Jund was never big on colorless lands.
Take a look at Andrew Boswells list for example and his color requirements
Having colorless lands is just too awkward. Terminate and Abrupt Decay are uncastable with them and those are your premium removal spells and since you are a disruptive deck actually being able to play them when you want to is a pretty big deal too.
Abzan has a bit more leeway in this since it for one doesn't play a spell like Terminate alongside the Decays for example. Lingering Souls also provides a stream of chump blockers that can buy you a lot of time so you are not as reliant on killing everything. Another luxury that Jund doesn't have.
Really like Andrew Boswells Jund list there.
I saw a few people in the Jund thread talking bad about Olivia Voldaren but the fact is that she takes over games like almost no other card can. There are a ton of decks that simply cannot beat an Olivia. Period.
Mathias also mentioned it that even against stuff like Amulet Bloom an Olivia with mana is pretty damn good because their plan is to play big dumb green creatures and overwhelm you with them and she is pretty damn good against that kind of stuff.
That's why Im definitely a fan of maindecking her while having the Huntmaster of the Fells in the sideboard for matchups where their value actually matters.
Also like the 5 five planeswalkers package of 1 Chandra, Pyromaster and 4 Liliana of the Veil.
Also love the new Jund lists. 2, 3 Decays max. The matchup with my Faeries and Storm hasn't been as good since a very long time .

Me neither. For an explanation, I didn't like the meta when Melira Pod was dominant and I'm okay with the environment as it is right now, way more than what it was in December. I would not be glad to see it rise again as a very solid tier 2 deck that could potentialy be tier 1 with some bannings.
Let's remember that there's a middle ground between being 20% of the metagame and being 0%. If Abzan Company becomes some kind of 6%-8% deck (kind of like Affinity overall or Grixis Delver on MTGO), then that's a net positive for format diversity. Particularly if the deck's Burn matchup remains as solid as it's looking now, in which case Burn's metagame share might fall as Company's rises. Obviously no one wants Abzan Company to be 15%+ of the format, or probably even 10%-12% like the big three (Twin, Abzan, Burn). But having Abzan Company as a tier 1 deck or a solidly tier 2 deck is overall good for the format. And unlike Pod, Company imposes enough restrictions and has enough limitations that it doesn't necessarily hit those insane metagame shares if it's successful. It can have a more moderate definition of success.
I agree that a 4-6% metagame share would be adequate for Junk Company. Being a solid tier 2 deck is fine too, but I'm concerned on a personal note about the fall of aggro decks : Burn, Affinity and Infect are fine for me. Being a Burn player, I suffer from the rise of Junk Company, but as a Living End player, I'm glad to see it also. So I'm in between, but in all, if it ends up being a good tier 2 deck, then I'd be glad to see the meta being diversified and healthy!
How does Living End beat a board with a Viscera Seer without grave hate?
Every time I have seen that matchup watching replays the Living End player just got wrecked when that happened. You are actually doing them a favor since they will get a ton of scry and ETB effects and die effects in case of Voice of Resurgence out of it.
Sample size is obviously low though since Living End is not really a deck you see often.

I totally agree with this.
Especially since the deck "polices" a different subset of decks than traditional Abzan. It's good against aggressive decks. That should be kinda obvious when we are talking about a deck with 4 maindeck Kitchen Finks and an infinite life combo. In my eyes that can only be an improvement to the format and I hope that it rises higher in the meta and facilitates some changes to the the way the meta looks like. It's no coincide that we never had such an Aggro-heavy meta when Pod was around.
And as it was with Pod it also helps that it is a Midrange deck in Abzan colors that doesn't require goyf/lili and is therefore only half the price.
This weekend, there's the SCG 5K Premier IQ in Worcester: what do you guys expect to see?
The Legendary Trio
But realistically speaking I would say that Abzan Company stands a better chance. Elves can have ridiculous starts but it has way more trouble coming back from behind because almost none of the creatures provide value and it doesn't have an actual game-ending combo either. It is also lacking in interaction in it's current form which can get you into trouble.
A really nice Top 16 there.
An Abzan Company deck showed up as expected. Also cool to see BG Obliterator Rock considering that you don't see it that often and there is an ongoing discussion about Phyrexian Obliterator.
Also curious about that Crux of Fate in the sideboard. Because I fail to see a reason to run it over Damnation considering that there are no dragons in the list. Most likely an availability issue and not a budget issue considering we are talking about a BG deck full of money cards.

These are some of the obvious ones.
I do hope to see some of the new cards though that are currently a bit under the radar.
Now that you say it, yes you are right.
You have to admit thought that these two decks can be confused with each other from time to time.
No, they don't do coverage for these events. Only Opens have coverage.
You linked two decks wrongs. Here are the right links
11. Amulet Bloom
15. Abzan
GW Hatebears also played a copy of Hallowed Moonlight in the sideboard.
Also Harbinger of the Tides...ugh
Not the biggest fan of fish

Jund was doing well though. That's for sure. Excellent
