It's probably because it's a small event. They'd probably play different decks at a GP/PT.
And I dunno if he wasn't feeling it or if he was tired but Reid seemed to be displeased on camera. I thought it was because he wasn't happy with the deck but I'm probably wrong since all of them have experience with Storm.
I can understand a small event, with a small number of rounds there's a real advantage to playing something with a good game 1, that just occasionally spikes games 2 and 3. I totally understand the reasoning for JA and Storm I just don't happen to agree with it. If I were playing Worlds I think my deck of choice would be Grixis Delver hedging on the idea that I could dodge aggressive decks due to the metagame and preferences of those involved while getting all of the advantages of UR Delver plus hand disruption.
Although this event has given me the itch to play Storm again even though I know it is still bad (storm went 5-7). However, I think Finkel's MB from his list back in Feb is better than any of these (Treasure Cruise seems so bad in these lists), obv Finkel's SB would have to be updated.
I agree with almost everything you said but I disagree that Storm is bad. I saw some missplays on camera and some of the CFB players didn't seem to be comfortable with Storm.
Between the JA and the Storm it looked to me like a lot of the top pro's think Modern is all about uninteractive combo. Interesting how the matches turned out for the ones who went that route.
Willy plays thoughtseize. Black spreads his hand. Willy slaps pod out of it. It spins across the table into his grave yard. All in a single motion.
That is the most pimp slapped thing Ive seen in magic to date.
"Get that weak ***** off my playmat."
lol, but for real. Willy vs Black, Rock vs Pod talk about the best players at the deck repping.
I've never been too impressed with Sam Blacks piloting of Pod. Every time I have ever seen him play it he has treated it as a combo deck that sometimes wins on the board which is completely backwards to how others treat it. Maybe his playstyle with the deck has changed though, I don't remember him posting any content with it in the past year.
