I'm not sure if the inclusion of Goys can still be considered as Little Kid as this was excluded from the start and the deck was created to battle Goyfs in Jund and traditional Abzan. Don't get me wrong as I agree that the inclusion of Goyf makes the deck better as I've seen some recent Top 8s in my meta with the deck, it's just that it might be considered a traditional Abzan deck.
That's what I've observed. I usually want a T1 dork then a T2 Smiter or Anafenza if possible or Voice the least. Then a T3 Rhino to curve. Thanks Ageless127. I'll keep this in mind. I'm about to get the Hierarchs this week as well as a Razorverge Thicket. Thicket would replace Stirring Wildwood but I'm not sure how to manage my dorks. My gut tells me to go 3/3 split between Hierarchs and BOP or is 4 Hierarhs 3 BOP better?
I do not know the meta and since it's a small tourney Tier 1 decks were rare. I had a feeling I should prepare for Storm and Bogles. Btw, my previous deck list had an error with the lands. It should've been - 4 Marsh Flats, + 1 Flooded Strand. Here we go.
The Naturalize could've been another EE if I had it. I actually couldn't think of any other card outside Naturalize except for another Scooze.
The Games:
Round 1 vs Storm
G1 - I've played with the opponent before albeit he was using a different deck and he was kind enough to slow down a bit and do a play by play explanation since I mentioned this is the first time I'm playing Storm. I'm facing a combo deck so it was an unfavorable match and G1. No Abrupt Decay or Path showed up. I could've slowed him down if I was able to take care of the Goblin Electromancer.
SB: I can't remember what I took out but I jammed 8 cards from the SB +2 Thalia, +2 RIP, + 2Cage +2 Zealous (I know he plays Empty the Warrens after G1)
G2 - My opening 7 had RIP but no lands. Mull to 6 - slow hand. Mull to 5 - no land. Mull to 4 - 1 RIP and 1 land. The scry revealed another land. I guess I can extend the game to game 3. RIP came down on turn 2. Followed by 3 creatures then a Cage on turn 4 or 5. I got this. Turns out he had 2 Echoing Truths on his hand. RIP and Cage were returned to my hand and the storm player displayed great mathematical skills resulting into 50+ goblins. I need to outclass that great play so I prayed for a ZP which would win me the game but this match is not for me.
(0-2) 0-1
Round 2 vs Eldrazi Tron
G1 - I got a nice curve. T1 dork, T2 Smiter, T3 Voice and T4 Liege. He was overwhelmed. At first I thought I was playing GR Tron but this was a mash up.
SB: + Qasali, +3 Stony, +1 Naturalize, -2 Lingering, -1 Scooze, -1 Finks. I realized I could've just boarded out the 3 Decays but I was so focused on disabling his artifacts.
G2 - This was a slow hand for me but I was able to get by. I think I had 2 creatures in play and would win the game next turn but he got lucky and topdecked an Expedition Map. This made Tron online and he was able to cast Ulamog. I still have a creature in my hand and can still win if I take care of that Ulamog. He had no cards in hand. I draw. No Path. On to game 3 then.
G3 - This was the slowest hand I had. I've no creature until T3. He was able to go online in T3. Ulamog hits play after a couple more turns and I was able to Path him. I thought I can still turn it around but another Ulamog came down his next turn and I'm not able to deal with it.
(0-2) 0-2
Round 3 vs GW aggro with Knight of Reliquary
G1 - He lead with a Bird which met a path. I cast Bird and he played Scooze on his turn. I settled with Smiter on my turn and he had the Knight on T3. I was in control this game as Path and Decay was able to deal with Scooze and the Knight.
SB: +2 RIP, +2 Zealous, -1 Qasali, -1Finks
G2 - Same scenario as G1. I was able to take care of an early Knight and my opponent was overwhelmed.
(2-0) 1-2
Round 4 vs Merfolk
G1 - His first creature was Kira then he copied my Rhino. Master of the Waves came in and I was overwhelmed.
SB: +2 Zealous, +1 EE, -1 Qasali, -1 Finks
G2 - Not sure with my SB and I just realized I could've included Choke in the sb for the Naturalize. I also forgot that this deck has Vial so I could've taken out a Smiter or Rhino instead. He had a T2 Spreading Seas which sealed the deal as I was not able to removed it. I was unable to block his fishmen.
Round 5 vs Jeskai Delver and Young Pyro
G1 - He played and casted a Probe. He saw 2 lands, a Bird and a lot of Smiters and Anafenza. I played the dork hoping for an explosive T2 but it was Helixed on the opponent's turn. I missed land drops on T3 until T7 and was defeated by a Delver and Clique. Had I got that third land he wouldn't have been able to deal with my creatures.
SB: I didn't see any Snapcaster Mage so: +2 Thalis, +2 Zealous, -1 Scooze, -1 Qasali
G2 - I was hoping too much until Snappy flashed something back. Topplegesit was annoying as it slowed down my offense but luckily I was able to overwhelm him.
SB: +1 Cage. At this point I still don't know what to take out and we're losing time so I didn't removed any card.
G3 - He had an early Topplegeist and Delver. Thalia was great in this game. His T3 upkeep revealed Anger of the Gods. I had 3 creatures that would get exiled and a Smiter in play. I played very safe and held out Voice. I was thinking of having it exiled and not take advantage of the token(s) when I should've been aggressive since he would lose his creatures too and I'll have a Smiter remain. I mana flooded after establishing a steady board with 5 creatures but I'm unable to deal with a flipped delver and Topplegeist. The Stirring Wildwood was a turn too late. His last play would've been an attack from the 2 flying creatures (I was down to 1) and I can only block one. I've learned a lot in this match.
(1-2) 1-4
I had an abysmal record but I look at the experience positively as the Storm player was lucky on G2 as well as the Eldrazi player. I had complete control vs the GW aggro deck and my G1 against the Delver deck was very unlucky. I know these are what could've beens but these are just breaks of the game and I can't control these things. Only in the Merfolk match up is where I felt I wouldn't win. Hopefully on the next big tourney I'm more experienced and I have the Hierarchs and Thicket. The only Tier 1 deck I saw was Jund. Im' not sure if Merfolk is Tier 1. I saw Elves and 2 Bogles players.
Bamt Eldrazi is a weird deck. In not sure how to board against it with any deck honestly. However, Ayiluss is correct about Lingering Souls in the Jund matchup. The only reason you don't play 5 of them against Jund is because it's not legal. That card gives them fits.
I personally don't like Stirring Wildwood. It's slow and really messes up your lines of play if you get it early. I'd rather have Sunpetal Grove in that slot if you don't have Razorverge Thicket. Playing 1 isn't the worst but I would hate playing 2.
I'm guessing you hate playing with 2 Wildwoods, right? If I'm correct then I'm glad I'm not the only person who had the same evaluation on it if you have 2 copies.
Bant Eldrazi should be a pretty good matchup, but Pridemage only kills Spellskite so it seems bad overall to board in. Zealous is definitely strong here. Remember if you happen to have a Liege or Smiter in hand and they have a Reality Smasher, you can Path it and discard Smiter/Liege and put it into play.
Btw, you should never board out Lingering Souls against Jund, period. It's one of the main reasons Abzan Midrange is favored against Jund.
Thanks for the Reality Smasher tip. I also learned that day that you can cast Path to Exile in response to a TKS. I had to board in Pridemage as I was not able to deal with TKS in game 1 since Spellskite was in play. My opponent was able to cast TKS in turn 2 if I'm not mistaken. The only consolation is that another Liege player was able to beat him so I just have to be more familiar how both deck works.
You got me with the Souls I get it's point but ow should I board against Jund? Do I still bring in RIP or just the Spellskites? Thanks!
I piloted the deck for the very first time and what a great way to do it in a small 8-man tourney. This is my first aggro deck in Modern and it feels nice to switch gears as I play Lantern. This is currently a budget build but I'll pick up the Hierarchs and Razorverge Thickets by the end of the month or by the first week of July
It has 61 cards and I had a hard time cutting out a card but would it be a Pridemage if I trim it to 60. The 2nd Stirring Wildwood could've been a Thicket but I don't have a budget for it yet. Most lists have a couple but Sunpetal Grove works fine so far so I'd like to hear some thoughts on both lands.
The Games:
Round 1 vs Bant Eldrazi
G1 - I wasn't expecting this deck. I'm new to the place, I got a new deck and I'm facing an Eldrazi deck for the first time (I skipped playing Modern during the Eldrazi outbreak and played one tournament a week before the last banning but didn't face any Eldrazi). I was nervous. The mull to 6 with a meh hand didn't help either. My opponent was able to cast Thought-Knot by turn which sealed the deal.
G2 - I'm not sure how to sideboard. I brought in another Qasali to deal with the Spellskite. A mulligan to 5 didn't help and my opponent had TKS and the Eldrazi with a blinking ability. I guess I was locked out. The deck has 6 dorks and I don't know what's up with this deck on why it mulls.
0-2 (0-1)
Round 2 vs Naya Zoo
G1 - Another mull to 6 but my opponent mulled to 5. Voice of Resurgence did the most damage followed up by Smiter. Finks was the lifeline when I was down to 6. My opponent had only one creature. Looks an easy win but the burn spells made it difficult.
SB: - 2 Lingering, + 2 Zealous
G2: For the 4th straight game I had to mulligan. Mull to 6. I had a decent hand with a Smiter on turn 2 and Rhino on turn 4. The opponent has only one land and a Loam Lion which was Pathed. This was the easy win.
2-0 (1-1)
Round 3 vs Jund
G1 - What a treat. I'll be facing the deck that inspired Abzan Liege. I want to experience first hand if my deck was really built to prey on Jund. What's new? Mull to 6. A turn 2 Resurgence was big. My opponent was not familiar with Resurgence and bolted a BOP by my end of turn. Yay, free Elemental Token. He was able to cast a Tarmogoyf but was Pathed. I was delayed as I had no Black mana since the BOP was killed but a fetch was on time for turn 4 for a Siege Rhino which sealed the deal.
SB: - 1 Lingering, - 2 Qasali, + RIP + 1 Zealous
G2: I don't know what I'm thinking and why I didn't took out all the Lingering Souls instead for 2 RIP and 2 Zealous. I was hoping I can still use Lingering Souls even if I'm unable to flashback it if RIP is in play. What do you know? I kept my opening hand! Opponent leads with an IOK hitting BOP but it doesn't matter as I got a Pilgrim on my turn which fueled a Voice on my 2nd turn. My opponent learned his lesson so no spells during my turn. He got BOB and attacked but I didn't hesitate to block with Voice. On my third turn I got another VOR and casted the second one that was in my hand. My opponent answered with a Goyf. I played the 3rd VOR and Pathed the Goyf. On the next turn my opponent had to analyze his play very hard. I thought he had a Pulse but he didn't. He played Liliana so I pitched a BOP. On my turn my opponent's headache got worse as I had 2 VOR and an Elemental token (he only has an Abrupt Decay which he revealed at the end of the round). I played Finks and I was so cautious that I attacked the token to Liliana when I should go all in to my opponent as I can pitch the Finks to Liliana's -2 next turn.
2-0 (2-1)
I placed 4th and could've been probably 3rd if the top 2 players didn't ID. But still I'm satisfied with the deck. It can win easily but I have a lot to learn as aggro and combat is not my forte. I'd like to bring Lantern to bigger tournaments but it will be difficult and being proactive in Modern is better and I don't have a budget for Goyfs that's why I settled on this deck. Hey, any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Round 1: 1-2 against Abzan Company.
Game 1, I had a nice aggressive start but he eventually assembled his combo after 3 Companies. Game 2 was much better: Turn 2 Anafenza followed up by a Smiter and later a Persecution which sealed the deal. Game 3, I had a turn 2 Anafenza but he a had a Path for it and he later won.
In: 2 Cage, 2 Zealous Persecution, 1 Mindcensor. Out: 2 Finks, 1 Voice, 2 Souls (because of Cage. Same goes for Finks).
Round 2: 0-2 against Elves.
I got obliterated both games. Nothing much to say here.
In: 2 Cage, 2 Zealous Persecution, 1 Mindcensor and 2 EE. Out: 1 Finks, 2 Souls, 2 Voice, 2 Anafenza.
Round 3: 2-0 against RB Vampires.
I won both games fairly easily. He played a budget deck.
In: 1 Purge. Out: 1 Anafenza.
Round 4: 1-1 draw against BUG Midrange.
Game 1, he had more creatures than me and I died. Game 2, I was able to come back from a Damnation sweeping 4 Spirit tokens and 3 mana creatures and later killed him with Noble and Township beats. Game 3, was very grindy and close but we couldn't finish it in time.
In: 1 Purge, 2 Persecution (had Confidant, Clique and Kathari Remnant. Plus it pumps my Spirit tokens and is good in combat). Out: 2 Anafenza, 1 Finks.
Round 5: 2-0 against Grixis Thing in the Ice control.
Won both games fairly easily as well. Smiter got through counter spells and Siege Rhino was a champ.
In: 3 Thalias, 1 Purge. Out: 2 Anafenza, 2 Finks
Round 6: 2-1 against Grixis Control.
Game 1, I had 3 Spirit tokens, a Voice of Resurgence and a Wilt-Leaf Liege which attacked for lethal eventually. Game 2, Staticaster killed my Spirit tokens and mana dorks. I Decayed the Staticaster but a K-command returning the Staticaster and later a Kiki-Jiki + Exarch won him the game. Game 3 was similar to game 1.
In: 3 Thalias, 1 Purge. Out: 2 Anafenza, 1 Path (should've kept it in), 1 Finks.
I'm not too sure about Anafenza. I boarded her out in all the matches except for Abzan Company but there was a Living End player and a Dredge player, so they might be decent to have but I'm not too convinced yet.
1 Abzan Charm was good overall. Never a bad top deck and was also relevant against BUG Midrange.
Might cut 1 BoP. Had some openers with too many mana creatures.
Feel free to ask any questions.
I'm not convinced with Anafenza in the main but if there's a lot of Abzan Coco then she needs to be in there but if not then she is SB material. I haven't played the deck yet but I'm happy when I'm doing goldfishing. It looks promising compared to the dorkless version I built before. I tried to insert a pet card but it doesn't work well and the deck is better on it's original plan). I'd rather put an additional Abrupt Decay or Path in the main since I lack Hierarchs and surprisingly I couldn't find Avacyn's Plgrims as a replacement. I'm using an Arbor Elf and Elvish Mystic for now while I'm waiting for the Pilgrims and hopefully the Hierarchs by end of next month. I know these are common cards but I haven't gone out for a while and in place of the third elf I'm goldfishing a Selesnya Evangel. Works silly when you have an Elemental token and might not get noticed but it'll be replaced once I play this week.
The Anafenzas are obviously very strong against Melira Company which has been proven a very difficult matchup game. Cage and Zealous (to wipe their board) also helps against Abzan Company.
Against slower combo decks like Ad Nauseum and Scapeshift I've chosen to go with 4 Lieges simply because I don't feel like 2 Thoughtseizes does enough against them and being more aggressive seems like the way to go. Too much hand disruption can instead dilute our aggressive game plan.
Kitchen Finks is one of the weakest creatures in the deck as Burn is slightly getting played less nowadays but synergizes well with Anafenza.
Lingering Souls as a 4-off is very strong together with 7 pump effects.
I'm trying out 3 Thalias in the side again. I helps against Ad Nauseum, Infect, Burn, Storm. Basically all non-creature combo decks and also control to some extent. I don't think it is the best against GR Valakut and RUG Scapeshift but it might slow them down. Aven Mindcensor is much better here.
Memoricide is for all the combo decks that rely on a specific card to combo off.
This is very much appreciated. I have everything except Hierarchs and some lands. Is it really that bad for the dorkless build? I'll try to substitute it with another mana dork and see from there.
Anyone who can post an updated competitive dorkless build?
I've no budget yet to build the aggro version (lacking Hierarchs) and I can only build the dorkless version based on my pool of cards. I plan to give it a test on small tourney (probably 10-15 people).
I do not know the meta and since it's a small tourney Tier 1 decks were rare. I had a feeling I should prepare for Storm and Bogles. Btw, my previous deck list had an error with the lands. It should've been - 4 Marsh Flats, + 1 Flooded Strand. Here we go.

I'd like to bring Lantern to bigger tournaments but it will be difficult and being proactive in Modern is better and I don't have a budget for Goyfs that's why I settled on this deck. Hey, any feedback is greatly appreciated.
This is very much appreciated. I have everything except Hierarchs and some lands. Is it really that bad for the dorkless build? I'll try to substitute it with another mana dork and see from there.
I've no budget yet to build the aggro version (lacking Hierarchs) and I can only build the dorkless version based on my pool of cards. I plan to give it a test on small tourney (probably 10-15 people).
Thanks.
