If you have the cards, add 1/2 gilt-leaf palace, 1 canopy (for the draw), 2/3 cavern.
If you are greedy, add another abbey.
In the side you could add 3 thoughtseize, and replace the green leyline for the white one, it's better. But if you want golgari elves don't do this... but good luck vs storm haha
You could play with kataki instead of the sage and push, path or beast within instead of the dismember and the decay.
Wow, I come here after all this time for an update on my Golgari elf and lord oh lord what a godsend you are!
I have a few question about your build:
1) Why the Eldritch Evolution? I feel likeChord of calling or even Lead the stampede would probably be better. Then again, you get to trigger another Shaman of the pack or get a sideboard piece as it act as a mini chord. I'm just not sure if sacrificing creatures is what we want.
2)No Cavern of souls? (Is it a budget reason? if so would you run it if you had them?)
3)How did Abrupt Decay and Leyline of Vitality perform for you? I must admit I never thought of any of those for my deck and I am pretty curious as to how well they perform. I usually run Beast within for universal removal and Essence warden for lifegain.
Wow, Lots of sultai elf talk. It's very interesting. It's my favorite color combo + my favorite tribe. I didn't know any of you took that color combination seriously or were even testing it for that matter.
I've not seen Beck // Call being mentioned. The Glimpse of nature like effect is strong, but is the mana cost too restrictive? Is it too "winmoar"?
Also, I have a feeling a Sultai build would make our deck slower, but not necessarily weaker. Like I feel we'd value an approach that focus more on Card advantage over Speed, meaning we'd become midrange. Or at least I think, maybe I'm wrong.
Also, Coiling oracle is an elf. Huh... color me surprised.
The best turn 3 kill I ever done with Elves is 56 trample damage. On the draw versus Titanshift w/ a mulligan to 6.
Hand : Land, Elvish Mystic, Heritage Druid, 2xCopperhorn Scout, Elvish Archdruid
Scry : Chord of Calling (stay on top)
T1 /Draw Chord of Calling/ Land, Elvish Mystic
T2 /Draw Land/ Land, 2x Copperhorn Scout, Heritage druid, Elvish Archdruid
T3 Combat Phase: Attack w/ Heritage Druid, Elvish Mystic, 2x Copperhorn
Response to first Copperhorn trigger: Tap Archdruid and 1 land for 6 mana, Chord for Ezuri
First Copperhorn trigger resolve: Tap Mystic, Archdruid and 3 Elves for 10 mana
Second Copperhorn trigger resolve: Tap Mystic, Archdruid and 3 Elves for 10 mana
20 mana in pool for 4x Ezuri ability
4x 14/14 Trample Elves attacking for 56 dmg
GG
My opponent could have done Anger of Gods T3 but he thought he could wait one more turn. Lol.
And that folks is why I think Copperhorn Scout has a place in this deck, even if just as a one of.
Whats the general opinion on Lifecrafter's Bestiary? Does it get good value in this deck, or is it generally a dead draw/win-more type card? Does it sometimes win games?
it's rather useless against most Aggro deck since you'd rather have board presence than draw cards. In these kind of match-ups, you'd wish your Lifecrafter's Bestiary was something else.
Against control decks however, this card is broken. If it resolve, your opponent will never manage to keep, or even get card advantage over you. Sweeper will slow you down instead of making you lose on the spot and all your elves are already replaced with value, so spot removal is annoying at worst. You still have to worry over cards that can lock you out like Elesh Norn, Grand cenobite or Ensnaring Bridge, but otherwise, I'd definitely recommend it. I currently play one copy in my GB build and almost everytime it got out against control, it won me the game.
Not to be a killjoy, but an Elve player transformed his Westvale abbey once against me while I was playing my token deck and I cast Path to exile, They lost five elves AND a land, which is pretty steep of a loss for one card. The player really did not do it a the right time though, since he only had 5 elves (no Ezuri or anthem ones) and I had no flying at that moment, Instead of going for 9 lifelink, he just boardwiped himself and pretty much gave me the win. Since then, I have personally been reluctant to try the card.
I think we need to stop putting down cards because of misplays by their user. I have NEVER had a Orhmendal pathed, the reason is simple: Opponent playing white? NO FLIPPING.
Non-delver Opponent has 1UUU up? NO FLIPPING.
Don't be reluctant to try the card, instead, be better at it than the pilot who messed up. We know full well the strengths and weaknesses of an Indestructible creature, so why expose ourselves to a blowout? The card is an autowin against certain decks, and that's why we use it. Orhmendal getting pathed doesn't prove the card is bad: it proves the pilot is.
That's a fair point. I do then to look down on cards my other decks have no problems dealing with, which is kind of a bad habit of mine. I'm gonna try to adapt my views to your philosophy more.
So I went to my local modern with my elves deck for valentines (Decklist in the signature). Went 2-1, but still placed first because we were only 6 and nobody ended up with 3 victories. Here are my games:
Round 1 vs Boros Burn / On the Draw(2-1): Very stressful game, I really don't like playing elf against burn. Lost game one because I played the Pokédex on turn 2 instead of an Elvish Archdruid. I should have gone for an all-out attack instead of setting up for late game, for there was no late game. I was burnt to a crisp by turn 4. Game two I sided in Essence Warden, and STILL went for the Pokédex Turn 2, but got an essence warden turn 1 which soaked a Lightning Botl. I was able this time to plus off my Pokédex and go for game. Game 3 was more standard, put a couple elf, treat them offensively to bait Volcanic Fallout. I then proceed to swarm the field and go for win. Fortunately he did not have any more sweeper and I won.
Side-in/out: Brought 4 Essence Warden and one Spellskite in for three Elvish Visionary and two Nettle Sentinel. the Warden shined here.
Round 2 vs Nahiri Burn+Emrakul / On the Draw(0-2): Ouch ouch ouch. Those weren't good game. First game, My opponent bolted my mana dorks the two first turns, he then proceeded to put up a ghostly Prison on turn 3 and turn 4, and I had no Elvish Archdruid or Heritage Druid to pass over the cost. He then mana screwed me with Blood Moon to prevent me from casting Shaman of the Pack. I proceeded to get burnt out of the game. At this point, I was sure I was playing against some kind of burn floodgate deck, so I sided in enchantment removal and the Essence Warden. Game two I mulligan to 6 with only one land and no mana dork (well I had Heritage druid, but no other one drop.) Guess what. No lands until turn 4, the turn which Nahiri, the Harbinger got out. Turn 6 Emrakul smashed my face as well as my field, got downed to 5 life. My opponent did not get any burn until turn 9, which allowed me to put up a board for a potential comeback, I even was able to coco two shaman of the pack to bring him down to 3 life, if only I had one elf more at that time, I would have clutched that game so hard. Unfortunately, he drew into his burn and I lost.
Side-in/out: four Essence Warden, two Reclamation sage (Which I saw one, but did not help that much) and one Fracturing Gust For my Elvish Visonary and Nettle Sentinel. I did not side well against him. Would have gone for the Thoughtseize as well as the Pithing Needle If I saw his nahiri game 1.
Round 3 vs Golgari Eldrazi / On the Play (2-0): Polar opposite of the previous game. Game one was a grindy game where the Pokédex saved my life in the long run. He eventually ran out of removal and I went for an avalanche of elves. Game two was over fast. Turn 1 mana dork, turn 2 Heritage druid + Dwynen's Elite + Elvish Archdruid. Turn 3 I coco into Ezuri, Renegade Leader + Shaman of the Pack (I could have swung for game, but I tapped my mana like a retard, lesson learned there). My opponent scooped because by then he did not get any of his sweeper/sideboard against me.
Side-in/out: Two Essence Warden for one of each Elvish Visonary and Nettle Sentinel (I really like siding these one out.)
I did not expect to be first though, but we're not supposed to make games when we're only six,it screws with the algorithm I guess. Bleh, I won't complain.

I personally have no interest in Chord of Calling in the GB build of elves, we plan to put as many elves as possible on the battlefield so that we can optimize the damage output of Shaman of the Pack. I feel like it goes better in GW or abzan builds where we want to tutor options for each scenario, but hey, all that is an opinion of mine, not a fact.
As for dealing with tron, the best strategy is to attack their mana base, so having a tutorable land destruction creature with Fulminator Mage that can also be put down with Collected Company looks like something worth trying. The BB mana cost is a bit harsh, but I think we can deal with it. Worst case scenario, you just name elemental with Cavern of souls (HA! Try to counter that now!).
In my B/W token deck (Another deck that really really hates tron), I usually go for the Ghost Quarter + Surgical Extraction combo to break the cycle of urza lands, but elves don't play a lot of lands and therefore don't have a lot of space for Ghost Quarter, not to mention we need that turn 1 green mana.
I have another modern event tonight. Probably gonna try it again just like that to feel the cards more. I was thorn between going 4/3 or 3/4 with Elvish Visionary and Nettle Sentinel and went with the latter last night. Might try the other way around this time, the few instance where I casted Elvish Visionary while the Pokédex was out felt like a really good play.
As for the Pokédex, yes I love the card and It will definitely replace Lead the stampede for me at least. I'm not sure for Chord of Calling though. Being able to tutor for what we need is very powerful, and choosing between that and the Pokédex will definitely change the way you'll build your deck. I do feel like Chord as more of a place in Green/white though, a tutorable Selfless Spirit is probably the best answer to a sweeper ever.
Also, Glissa, the traitor is suprisingly a real good removal/burn magnet. People really don't like seeing deathtouch and first-strike on the same card.
So I pretty much copied your deck for my modern tonight and it went smooth like butter. I went 3-0 with not a single game loss. Here my slightly customized decklist:
Round 1 vs Naya Zoo (On the Draw)(2-0): Turn 1 mana dork to turn 2 pokédex. He got me down to 9 life points by then, but that's where I proceed to plus out of the pokédex for the next 3 turns and overextend. He burned my Ezuri as well as a couple of my elves, but my constant aggression I could substain thanks to the pokédex put enough pressure for Shaman of the pack to finish him off. Game 2 was over quick. I got Elvish archdruid out turn 2 and he didn't get bolted. Turn 3 I proceed to coco into a shaman and an ezuri and turn 4 my nykthos got me 7 green mana Plus 5 mana from archdruid and I went for game since he hurt himself too much with his lands. He sided Anger of the gods but didn't draw into it or his burn.
Side-in/out: Sided my Essence Warden for my Nettle Sentinel. Did not matter.
Round 2 vs UB Zombie (On the Draw)(2-0): Never seen a tribal zombie deck in modern before. From what I've seen he plan to plus of Lord of the Undead, Diregraf Colossus, Cryptbreaker and Relentless Dead
and blue is to have access to Countersquall. Game 1 was the ideal game of turn 1 mana dork, turn 2 heritage druid + Dwynen elite + Elvish archdruid, to turn 3 Ezuri swing for 16, then turn 4 kill. Game two he controlled me a lot more, Saw two Inquisition of Kozilek on the first two turns, which got rid of one shaman and one dwynen, as well as two Fatal Push one revolted which killed an archdruid and the other another dwynen, and one Bile Blight Which got rid of two Elvish mystic. The mistake that ultimately gave me the win is that when he discarded cards from my hand, he picked Shaman of the Pack instead of my Elvish Mystci and it allowed me to make a lot more plays than I could have done and so he became stuck on removal mode without being able to put relevant creatures on the battlefield. Around Turn 6-7 I was able to put the pokédex and that's where the game slowly went to my favor.
Side-in/out: I didn't side anything for I did not see enough of his deck game 1, but I should have sided Nihil Spellbomb in to prevent grave interaction from his Lord of the undead
Round 3 vs UB Faerie (On the Play)(2-0): Game 1 I mulligan to 6 and he began turn 2 with Bitterblossom and at this point I knew he was planning on playing Spellstutter Sprite, so I played conservatively, while trying to bait the card on 1-drop and 2-drop and only playing my important spells when he tapped out. I was able to steal the game during my 7th turn (or 6th or 8th, lost count here) when he flashed Mistbind Clique to tap my lands and I responded by casting Collected compbany into the dream play of Dual Shaman of the Pack. It wasn't lethal, but it put enough damage to put him in a bad position until my next turn final attack. Game 2 I kept a hand with 3 lands, which coul have been a bad pick, but the poor guy was stuck at 3 land, with only 1 black mana. He showed me his hand at the end of the game and if he had the fourth land or the second black source, I was facing a Liliana of the Veil and two Cryptic Command as well as a Mistbind Clique.
Side-in/out: Nothing. I almost went for my Essence Warden to punish Bitterblossom but I didn't.
Probably a lot of luck tonight since except for game 2 of round 2, I ran into almost no removal and saw no sweeper. My hardest game was against fairy game 1, but I do feel like I played very well there. SO I was right to fall in love with that deck. Definitely got a thumbs up from me!
I've been playing the GB Lead the Stampede version for awhile, and I wanted to test the new Lifecrafter's Bestiary that I've seen some talk of. I decided to just go all in with an artifact subtheme to see if it paid off. I'm not sure about the other random artifacts yet, but Lifecrafter's Bestiary really stood out. Against any slower deck, it can just grind away 1 for 1 removal all day. After a quick burst, my play pattern usually involved never playing a creature without drawing a card, ensuring you never run out of gas. And don't underestimate scrying away lands to find more action (which is any creature). The only match I lost was against grixis delver, where in game 3 he topdecked a kolghan's command after being out of resources the turn before I was set to really go off with the Lifecrafter's Bestiary.
Anyway, I plan to take the deck to a local tournament if I can in the future, and like I said it needs more testing on the other random artifacts and Glissa, the Traitor to see if the whole subtheme is actually worth it, but I don't think I'm going back to Lead the Stampede. For the matchups where it is good, Lifecrafter's Bestiary is just better, and it is not that much slower overall with the amount of mana this deck creates. I'd love to hear if other people have similar thoughts, or any suggestions for the deck moving forward. I can also explain other card choices and do a more in depth write up of the matchups I faced if people want. Thanks.
How many copies do you run? I want to try two since I can tutor it with elvish Harbinger and with some luck Sylvan Messenger, but I want some stats. I hardly ever see the card in decklists and it's actually nice hearing some positives about it from someone else.
Also, nice Shaman of the Pack interaction there. Somehow I completely overlooked that Shaman doesn't require creatures, but only elves. It's just like with Heritage druid, it totally counts!
I've been looking into Prowess of the Fair lately in my GB Build, and it's a pretty neat card. It goes a bit against the aggro/combo nature of the deck, however it put such a nice warranty on our creature and help keep the board presence high for Shaman of the pack. I still need to test it at an event though, so maybe it's just me being too hyped by my card sequencing.
I'm already aware of the fact that this card is useless against Anger of the Gods and that you can tap it for the effect of Heritage druid, but outside of that, any of you have pros/cons to share on this card?
Somehow, I completely forgot that Glissa, the traitor was a thing. Talk about tutorable removal, and it could be run at one copy in the BG variant easily. I'm probably gonna try it out. Looks fun.

3)How did Abrupt Decay and Leyline of Vitality perform for you? I must admit I never thought of any of those for my deck and I am pretty curious as to how well they perform. I usually run Beast within for universal removal and Essence warden for lifegain.

Other options are: Pithing Needle/Phyrexian Revoker for Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Karn Liberated. It can also bind some interesting cards like Expedition Map and Oblivion Stone. Thoughtseize is fantastic here, almost necessary even. There's also the Stain the Mind you mentionned.
I have non tron in my meta, but I'm prepared in case one deck show its ugly face. Or at least I hope I am.
EDIT: Name Shaman with Cavern of souls so that you can still make black mana for Shaman of the pack and Fulminator Mage Since they're both Shamans

I am Totally sold on Lifecrafter's Beastiery (which I will totally call the pokédex from now on, thanks ketoglutarate). This card basically transform all of our elf into cantrip once our mana engine is up and running, it's insane. I replaced Smuggler's Copter for an extra Nettle Sentinel, played Nykthos, shrine to Nyx instead of Mutavault and two forest instead of the Horizon Canopy and fourth copy of Cavern of Souls. For the sideboard, a second Pithing Needle replaced Chameleon Colossus which I didn't have. (would have really helped tonight) Here are my matches:
Round 1 vs Naya Zoo (On the Draw)(2-0): Turn 1 mana dork to turn 2 pokédex. He got me down to 9 life points by then, but that's where I proceed to plus out of the pokédex for the next 3 turns and overextend.
