I am very saddened to read the news on MTGSalvation. I have strong empathy for the site as it helped to get where I am today. Thanks, everyone for reading my primers and I hope we can continue our journey together on my website and discord server, where I still continue to post content frequently!
Its rough to answer, but I believe that tokens are less impactful now. UW runs enough sweepers. Humans can just fly over them or you just chump with souls tokens. Hardened scales can produce more tokens and stronger threats in a shorter amount of time etc. A missing clock also hurts. Its still quite good and the power of looting is imo the most meaningful aspect of the deck which adds needed consistancy to the deck. Also GY hate can be quite impactful. But thats just my impression on this.
When you buy a land, for the sake of competitiveness, then always buy Cliffs first. However, I can understand that you want to skimp on that due to possible reprints in the future.
If you wanna buy other cards, then I would get LtLH, EE and Surgical. Leylines and Bridge are not necessary.
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong in investing in LtLH, EE, Surgical and fetchlands. Those should not drop in price regardless of Mardus playability in the future. Overall I think Mardu gets worse in the meta imo. But its still a very good deck to play.
I feel like the new Assassin's Trophy might push BGx decks to be more powerful than ours unfortunately. Its a better card than Terminate or Dreadbore which are our unconditional removal spells. What do ya'll think?
Assassin's trophy may be a house in standard and could warrant some legacy play but in modern the card is for almost all intents and purposes outclassed by Abrupt Decay. Jund and Abzan would only want to play it as a means to disrupt Tron on turn 2 on the draw, but I don't see it being more than a Sideboard card for them.
Trophy will actually be at its best in modern. The uncounterable clause is way more important in legacy than it is in modern. And decay is really bad in modern right now. Trophy will absolutely be played maindeck as a 3 or 4 of. I think you are really underevaluating the card overall.
I like 2 LtLH alongside 2 Rabblemaster in the main atm, no Blood Moon. Alternatively you could run 1 Hazoret and 1 Manamorphose instead of rabblemasters to have faster revelers.
I don't particularly agree with that. I view Mardu as being more a proactive control deck. Its not a prizon deck just because it jams a bunch of BM in there. And BM is not a guarantee to lock out the opponent. BM is a card that can grant free wins, but doesn't contribute to the main strategy of Mardu imo. Otherwise we would run 4 copies of it.
If you bring in surgical against tron, then the best use is to extract one tron land and use the tempo to win before they naturally cast a threat. their threats are very diverse, so one surgical on a threat wont do much. Also trying to prevent them from assembling tron by extracting their cantrips or land searching engines is not the best use, since tron is very consistant by assembling tron.
I have recently been playing Vengevine in addition to Mardu, and I have to say that a mix of Surgical, Spellbomb and Anger of the Gods is often more effective against the deck than leyline.
I have 4 Nature's Claim in the board for Leyline, but Surgical is a real beating.
What in your experience has been most devastating for your as a surgical target? Bridge or Vengevine I am assuming?
It's been a while since my last video series/stream, but this morning I streamed a full competitive league with Mardu Pyromancer. I've uploaded the stream VOD to YouTube. The forums are acting up a bit, so I'll post the raw link below:
A subscribe on YouTube and/or a follow on Twitch (at twitch.tv/olagziel) would help a lot if you enjoyed the videos! I've been rocking about the same 75 for the past month or so and it never fails me. This league had a lot of matches against Bant Spirits (three of the five), so if you want to get a bit of understanding on that match-up, I highly recommend watching. Anyways, enjoy and let me know if you have any thoughts.
Oh its you olagziel, nice to see you in the forums as well
Will definitely watch the VOD. I will also spread the word in my Midrange Discord channel (btw you and all are welcome to join if you want. the link is in the primer and here as well: https://discord.gg/guSNj7s)
I really like the pen trick you can do against them. When they attack you with an infect creature you can immediatly grab the pen to signalize that you dont have anything. They might now try to go all in and kill you immediatly nd we all know the person stepping in first in this situation is disadvantaged. Its a little mind trick you can do.
Since you mention vials, i guess you board it against humans then? If yes, i dont really think that this is quite correct. It seems pretty narrow to me.
Indeed, but the reason why we choose Molten/Fulminator over Sphere/Alpine is because Sphere hits us pretty hard as well and Alpine is pretty specific hate for Tron. When considering that the matchup is pretty bad anyway, it makes sense to cover other matchups to a better extend (Moltens/Fulminator are more usable across the format and less specific).
