Ok, you’ve seemingly spent quite a bit of time (and maybe money) picking a collectible hobby to follow and play that is primarily printed on “pieces of cardboard”.
I have spent a lot of money over a looooooong time, but I also work for minimum wage, and $14 just is a lot to pay for a card. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just think it's crazy to not consider that an expensive card (though obviously there are much more expensive ones).
I understand that I'm in a different class from most Magic players though-- it's a rich kid's game, and certainly those interested in judge foils tend to be pretty well off. But poor people play too-- probably more than you think.

Um, yeah dude, that's a lot to spend on one piece of cardboard. We don't all have $10,000 suits and four Underground Seas.
I think long and hard about buying any card over $1. Most of the time I don't do it.
