This is basically the magic version of cosmetic items in free to play video games.
Honestly, I like this model, it's not random, you just buy the thing that you want. It is also a way to separate the magic card collector from the magic the gathering player. Yes, there are plenty of people that are both, particularly for commander, cube and non-rotating deck purposes.
The major problem is of course ideally this would be paired with a reprinting of the basic game pieces *cough* Fetchlands *cough*, So collectors have these sweet pretty things and magic players can just use the basic game pieces and both people end up happy.
