Usually, this will hit your opponent, and then one of that same person's permanents.
Why would it ever destroy a permanent controlled by the same player that it hit? Unless you're down to a duel or no one else has any non-land permanents, you hit Player A, and then Player A chooses something controlled by Player B or Player C.
I really don't like this kind of play style and anticipate it would turn a lot of people off from social cards and make them not want to work together / play together in the future.
Agreed. That's almost akin to breaking a deal and will not only make me never make a deal with you again, but it will also draw retribution in later games, possibly even with my mono-blue deck designed exactly for that type of situation.
