At my local comics and games store, I am the M:tG department head. And in an attempt to receive more participation on Friday nights I've decided to launch Pauper Standard tournaments after our regular FNMs.
The hardest part of setting all of it up so far was going through Magiccards.info and finding every card in Standard that's currently a non-common rarity, but has been a common before. This is that list: Arrest Kitesail Oblivion Ring Phyrexian Hulk Primal Clay Rancor Rewind Righteous Charge Syncopate Torch Fiend Tormod’s Crypt
One of my regular players said that he thought some cards, like Rancor may be too powerful for the format, and as such, should be considered for a potential banhammer. I'm not sure that I agree, but that's why I've brought this here, to get ya'll's opinion.
Do you guys have any suggestions on other cards to ban? Is there already a Pauper Standard banlist forus to follow?
Not really. The 'banlist' is composed just of cards that were Common once but are now Uncommon. Which, at any rate, wouldn't be legal anyway since this is Standard Pauper we're talking about.
@GenericUser - I was under the assumptions that "former commons" were legal per the Pauper Online rules that say something along the lines of "If a common version of a particular card was ever released, any versions of that card printed at other rarities are also legal in this format." Correct me if I'm wrong though.
@TobiasX - Yeah, I had originally resorted to that link when the player I mentioned came to me with the "Rancor Problem." But since I saw no Standard cards, I thought it wise to ask around.
Only in Classic. What could loosely be described as Standard Pauper's ruleset was built upon regular Standard legalities. IIRC, after lobbying by the PDC folks, MTGO introduced a Standard Pauper filter.
Well that sucks, but it's good to know! How does this affect Torch Fiend? As it is both a common and an uncommon in Standard.
I'm of the opinion that you should just stick to the rarity given to said cards currently in standard. This also avoids confusion to the people who are unfamiliar with certain older printings. And thus Rancor.co shouldn't be allowed in T2 Pauper. But outside of T2? Sure. Go wild.
T2 Pauper sounds interesting though. Does it work?
- Hiss.
It's does, actually. I recently played a small tournament with some friends http://pdcmagic.com/ has some decklists and tournament reports.

It's not just an opinion, Standard Pauper ONLY includes cards that are common in T2 only. Rancor, and any other former commons that aren't common in a Standard set are not allowed to be used.
My local shop has had standard pauper for the lst 2 years. Ban the uncommons now. Save yourself the headache that our shop went through. They break the game badly. 2 things will happen. People stop showing up because of them or everyone is playing them and it turns into nothing but mirror matches.
The pauper standard rules by PDC standards only include cards that were printed at a common rarity /within the format/.
For example, rancor is not pauper standard legal in PDC tournaments. I don't believe wotc has an official standard pauper rules policy, so PDC is as close of an example as you'll get.
This debate seems to be over a card that is uncommon in standard? Does that make anu sense at all? Ban the cards that are not legal? Seems like a pretty good idea in any format.
I've been running some with some of the students at the college here, I was under the impression that in Paper Pauper unless it's printed at common in the sets that you are using it doesn't qualify. That's the way we've been doing it, anyway.
Same here. I've been running Standard Pauper events for years at the LGS. Cards have to be printed as a common in one of the sets legal for the format to be allowed.
The "you can use any version so long as its legal for Pauper" confuses some but its for cards like Demolish, Act of Treason, Blazing Torch, and others that were printed as uncommons previously but are commons in the current sets.
I play Standard Pauper online - the rules there are as described, the cards you listed are NOT legal. I strongly advise you to stick to the rules of MTGO as Standard Pauper is a supported format there, not competitive in the sense that you can win tickets, but you can play matches including sideboarding.
Standard pauper is a trap. You think you're giving everyone an even playing field, but the fact of the matter is, the same jerks who netdeck standard will netdeck your standard pauper tournament and ruin it for the new players. It should be an open format with people bringing in janky Vampire decks, etc, but it turns into everyone has grixis or a delver variant and you lose to Ghostly Flicker and Archaeomancer and the Rat discard and Prophetic Prism. It is not fun and it is not new player friendly.

It is an interesting format, actually, some decks that are often seen are Ghostly Flicker based, Boros Aggro, Selesnya Travel Preparations. And Seraph of the Dawn is a bomb!
my lgs had a std pauper tournament and UR delver took all three of the payout slots, all 3 of us ended up at nearly the same 75
