I was curious what people experienced at states as far as getting beat, by luck or stupidity?
For starters I attended VA States with jund and had multiple bad beats...
2nd round I played against boros..
Game 1 I just got out played
Game 2 He had a strong start but couldnt finish me off because he had 2 lands the entire game...I got board control and swung for 8 he was at 9 life with a thrinax untapped incase he top decked a bushwacker or guide(it had summoning sickness too) but we were tied up at 1 life each. No cards in his hand and he top decks a EARTHQUAKE!$#@$ to draw the game
Game 3 I win easily
Game 4 he gets a god hand and wins the round
I was so mad...
3rd round I got locked down by time sieve second game lol...it was embarrassing but I won that round 2-1
around 5th-6th round I played against a green white token deck my opening hand I had a verdent and dragonskull summit he wins the role and plays a noble hierarch and follows turn 2 a with 2 more! turn 3 a master of the wild hunt(still cant pulse btw but i have a pulls in my hand) then turn 4 a monument
I basically lost to a noble heirarch hitting me for 3 because of exalted like 5 turns in a row...
those were my bad beats but some kid told me that he was playing jacerator against valakut/ramp and like turn 5 he safe passaged and in response the kid harrowed twice with 2 valakuts active lol...

Only bad beats story I got out of MD States was my second-round opponent, who was playing a really weird midrange Soldiers deck. He got double Emeria online both games. First game involved lots of Captains of the Watch out of the yard. Second game was recurring Knight-Captain of Eos by sacking it to Carnage Altar EOT and getting it back with Emeria. I don't think I win vs. infinite fog.

That sounds really interesting and janky, which is my kind of deck. I'd be interested in finding out that decklist.
Game 1: Don't remember
Game 2: Don't remember
Game 3: I'm at 9, he's at 8 and has control of the game with a Jar-Jar Sphinx out and I have nothing but two untapped mountains. He swings with the Sphinx, and I go to 4. He taps out to Earthquake for 4. I double Bolt him in response.
1-0
Round 5 vs B/R Vampires
I don't remember exact details, but I didn't even know what deck he was playing until after I 2-0'd him. He got completely screwed both games and I felt kind of sorry for him, the only spells I ever saw were Gatekeeper and Nighthawk and a few fetchlands.
Round 6 or 7 (can't remember which) vs Jund
Game 1: I keep a 2 land hand and proceed to not draw a land the entire game.
Game 2: It's late into the game, he's winning but he's low. I'm at 5 lands and need to play my Broodmate to stay alive. I draw a fetch, crack it, go to 3, and... can't find a swamp or forest. I have two forests and two swamps in play. I am 100% certain my deck contains 3 swamps and 2 forests. I check my hand, my gaveyard, my sideboard, where the hell is it!? I check my deckbox- Oh... *GAMELOSS*
Uh yeah...you might want to file a DCI appeal because your opponent cheated if they told you there was a game 4.
You're still wrong:
A Magic match consists of a series of games that are played until one side has won an announced number. Drawn games do not count towards this goal, and the match continues for as many games as necessary or until time ends for the round, in which case the winner of the match is the player who has won the most games at that point. If both players have equal game wins, the match is a draw. The default number of games required for winning a match is two. The Tournament Organizer may define single-elimination final rounds to be played until one player has won at least three games, but this choice must be announced before the tournament begins. Match results, not individual game results, are reported to the DCI for the purpose of inclusion in worldwide ratings and rankings.

i dont know the rules exactly here, but game 3 wasnt it a draw, or did it count as a win for you because he was at 3 you were at 4 so the earthquake killed him first or something?
Matches are not best two of three; they're first to two. If it takes ten games to do it, so be it.
Anyway, I made a misplay in round 7 at VA States that handed me loss #2 and showed me the door. I'm fairly confident I could of won the round (I was playing Jund; opponent playing Boros) had I not of made it. No idea what round eight would of brought.
I don't have any "bad beats" stories, but I'll share an Epic topdeck moment. I was playing round two against five colour cascade, and boarded in four Goblin Ruinblasters. My opening hand..
3x Swamp
2x Ruinblaster
1x Catacombs
1x Rampant Growth
I won game one, so I was feeling confident and keep. Turn 2 rampant into a Mountain and pray for a top deck untapped red land. My next four draws..
- Rootbound Crag (hello T3 kicked ruinblaster)
- Siege-Gang Commander (hello T4 kicked ruinblaster)
- Basic land
- Broodmate Dragon
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
Yeah, CorpT's definitely right here. Back when I played Vintage competitively, I was witness to a match slip that read 2-0-7. Before the last several rules cleanups, a player with Worldgorger Dragon combo could intentionally cause a draw at will with any of their Animate Dead effects, as long as they didn't have a viable target to end their loop. The Dragon player kept drawing the games anytime he felt he was going to lose control, then eventually managed to take the match.
I built a Bant Shroud deck the night before the tournament and played it at FNM. It was beating Jund and Boros Bushwacker decks with ease. I registered it as FUJu. (F.U. Jund). But I ended up going 0-2 and dropping. Both my matches were against Jund and both first games of the matches I crushed them, no questions asked. Then game 2 and 3 of the first match, I ended up with 10+ lands both games. I would start off with a strong hand, and then flood out. 2nd match, I crushed him game 1 and game 2 I mulliganed to 4. Then never drew more land. Game 3 I had to mulligan to 5 to see 2 land, then I drew 8 more in the next 10 draws. =( I consider that bad beats.
My list made most of the removal in their deck worthless.
A few notes about my list, I would have ran two more Ajani over Harrows, and a better land base if I had the cards. Where I play, its difficult to trade for anything because one of the local owners trades for every copy of every money card and ebays them. Fine, I understand he's running a business, but it makes our card pool very shallow, and people from other areas of the state always have a lot better cards than we do here. I'm not ready to drop four hundred dollars for cards on ebay.
Back on topic, though, the sideboard choices are fairly obvious I think, except maybe the Traps. We have a lot of people that play Crypt Combo here, and after a Tome Scour or Hedron Crab activation, I always play the trap for free and take the game.
One funny game I had, even though I lost. I mulliganed to five against Jund and kept Seaside Citadel, Island, Hindering Light, Hindering Light, Flashfreeze. My opponent cast Blightning four turns in a row, and I Hindering Lighted it twice in a row, and then Flashfroze it twice. Both Lights hit land, however, and besides a Wall of Denial, every card I drew the rest of the game was land. First game of States against Jund I did have three 5/4 Deft Duelist, a 3/11 Wall of Denial and an 8/8 Sphinx of Jwar Isle with Ajani Goldmane.
Try this deck at your local FNM. If you play it well and don't get landflooded, which I do no matter what deck I play (I obviously shuffle poorly, but I really try to shuffle better...), this deck crushes Boros and Jund.
Took possibly my worst beat ever in round 4 of states VS my old roommate.
I'm playing vamps with a bloodwitch and gatekeeper in play, and a witch, tendrils, and noctun in hand. I'm at 20 life, he is at 14 or so- he has 2 hierarchs, a war monk an elspeth soldier, and a baneslayer with one card in hand.
I pass the turn, he draws, looks at his two cards, and plays finest hour. I'm ok with that, I can block whatever with my witch or take a little damage from the hierarch, no big deal. Then he taps a plays brave the elements... swings for 8 with the angel, then 12 with the rest for exactly 20 and the game.
The pest part is both finest hour and brave the elements are one ofs in his deck!! FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU!
I played a pretty typical Jund list, nothing weird or techy, just what I thought would be the most solid and consistent answers, while maximizing cascades. My version wasn't optimized to beat anything specific or the mirror, just to have the best shot against the field that I could. I have have bad beats and some goods beats stories.
I started winning my first 2 rounds, beating WU with no issue due to his bad draws VS my average to mediocre draws, then beating RB Vampires 2/1 after some close games, my game loss being due to not cascading into removal and dying to Noctournus flipping a black permanent.
Round 3 I ran into WGu and the first game I kept a Leach/Thrinax/Garruk hand which was solid, but when my opponent who won the dye roll went T1 Noble, T2 Rhox War Monk, T3 Emeria Angel, T4 Emeria Angel, I ended up loosing the turn before lethal to a swarm of bird tokens and topdecked Path. Game 2, I keep a hand without red, and even with a Pulse, I draw red on turn 4 which is to late to come back from, you guessed it, T1 Noble, T2 Rhox War Monk, T3 Emeria Angel, T4 Emeria Angel, T5 Elspeth, T6 Baneslayer Angel. Ouch. I deserved it for keeping the red-less hand.
Next round I loose in 3 to red deck wins. Game 1 I Pulse 2 Zektar Shrine Expeditions which where going live next turn and win. Game 2 and 3 my opponent doesn't play a creature, but kills me by casting Earthquake 3 and 4 times, along with loads of other burn, OUCH! My hand full of dead removal was sad times, probably should have mulled into Thrinax or Blightning, but my inexperience VS the deck cost me. Lesson learned.
At 2-2 my chances of top 8ing are very slim, but still exist. I almost head home to play Modern Warfare 2, but decide to stick it out for rating and the chance of a win. Round 5, I'm up against Jund, yuck, hate the mirror match, and while I have a decent idea of how to play against it, I don't have a ton of actual experience playing the games. I win 2/0. Round 6 I sit down, win the die roll, and my opponent plays... a Savage Lands. Yuck, mirror again. I win 2/1.
Round 7 I sit down across from another guy I know, but I'm not completely sure what he's playing. He's not thrilled to be matched up with me, but he's better than he gives himself credit for. And yes, he's playing Jund. I won 2/1. Final round! Again I have no clue what I'm up against when I sit down, as I'm sure you can guess by now, it's Jund. I win another close round, with the highlight being my opponent choosing to cast Broodmate into my board of Broodmate token instead of Blightninging me, leaving me to trade tokens, then drop my second Broodate, then follow up with a removal spell allowing my final Broodmate token finish things up.
Unfortunately the top 8 pairings where still a bit beyond me, but I was happy coming in at 13th of 160ish, winning 12 packs, and opening 2 fetches and a Day of J was pretty cool as well. I'm almost as happy about winning the mirror match 4 times in row as I am my standings, and I'm pretty happy to have locked in my 1800+ rating a bit better (I'm not bragging, I know that the 1800's are not much, but I'm a newbie and states was my biggest tournament to date, so it's another goal met.)

This is a good one--and sorry to hear that...
I was playing for top 8 with Barely Boros, with Path in the MD vs some kid playing GW Junk. I was kicking the crap out of him, when I ran out of burn to finish the job. We are in topdeck mode with empty boards. I had the land to kick a burst lightning and asked my deck for it for like 2 turns, cause he was at 4 life. He topdecks and plays....you guessed it-Baneslayer. So now I ask my deck for either a Path so I can keep him low on life or a Burst Lightning to finish it. I rip a land . I pass, and he ofc attacks with the Baneslayer, putting him out of Burst Lightning range. I rip a Burst Lightning for my next draw (where were you last turn?), but was asking for Path at this point, but I am only at 15 life...so I can maybe still pull it off. He attacks with the baneslayer the next turn, and drops another. I rip a path on my next draw, but I scoop. I knew this was right as I looked at my next few cards...land...land...land.
So I went to the VA states with boros bushwacker. Round 4 played against Jund. Game one I mulligan'd down to 5 and lost. Game 2 win with a sideboarded baneslayer going the distance. Game 3 got him down to 4 life and had nothing left while he had a full field. I count the number of cards left in my deck which was 44. I still have yet to draw one of my 2 burst lightnings. I figure the odds are under 5 percent of it being a burst lightning. I draw my card and whip it on the table without looking at it and then begin to start laughing as it was a burst lightning.
On a side note. Rebel what was left in your hand during the round 7 when you made your play mistake. I'll let you know if you would have won.

I was in a mana pocket with a fetch land in hand. I opted not to play and pop it so I could get a shuffle given the state of my opponents board. Whether I would of won or loss is impossible to tell; I could of shuffled and went Bit Bit into Elf into Pulse and been fine. I could of also continued to draw land or Rampant Growth's.
Either way, was a terrible mistake, but but ☺☺☺☺ happens in the heat of the moment. *Shrug*

That's not true. If you draw one game, you play a 4th. It's not actually best 2/3, it's first to 2 wins.
