So, have you ever imagined what it's like to be Nicol Bolas? Well this deck is designed to make you feel like the multiverses oldest living being, harnessing powers unimaginable by other mere mortals.
His mastery of Blue, Black and Red magic UBR is unprecedented, so it only seems right that he helms a deck that looks to blast your opponents permanents into oblivion, while melting faces as well.
If you're into spells that have a major impact on the game, then look no further than this spellslinger deck. As Timmy once told me, go big or go home.
There are 24 instants and sorceries in the deck. They represent his vast knowledge of ancient spells.
Sometimes he calls on a select few of Ixalan and Amonkhet fiercest Gods and beasts, to rain terror on those who resist his will.
The general plan, besides taking over the multiverse, is to win via overwhelming your opponents with mass removal, spot disruption, and reducing their life totals with both spells and creatures.
The deck is priced around $146 if you were to purchase them as singles, although removing 4 of the cards would half the price if you wanted.
With so much creature removal, Revel in Riches will produce you a lot of treasure tokens, either winning you the game, or providing the mana needed to power your planeswalker spark.
Stealing opponents commanders (or other creatures/artifacts) with Kefnet's Last Word, Confiscation Coup, Entrancing Melody and Rags // Riches, are super powerful swings. This represents Nicol Bolas psychic abilities, delving deep into minds of lesser beings, causing them to break.
Cut // Ribbons can deal damage directly to your opponents life totals.
Isn't it supposed to be 59 cards plus your commander? You have 1 too many cards.

Whoops, Baral's Expertise be gone!! Often the carsd that you would cast off it would be removal, so kind of counter intuitive at times. Want to keep that land count high, because Nicol Bolas is a very hungry dragon.
I did look at including Dynavolt Tower in this Nicol Bolas deck, but just felt that it's ability is just a little too under-powered. You need 2 1/2 spells to muster 3 damage, which just not enough impact on the game imo.
I will look at trying to make an energy deck in Brawl, but just like commander with the singleton nature, it makes it hard to really synergies a strategy like this. Which is actually really interesting because if you can't get one of the hall mark mechanics of an entire block to work, then it shows a big flaw in the format, right? Maybe I'm being a bit pessimistic, maybe a good energy deck can be built.
The other thing is that the standard ban list is completely inappropriate for Brawl. An energy deck doesn't really do anything special without Aetherworks Marvel, and this card is not too powerful in the Brawl format, because of the much more random nature of one of each card.

Brawl has smaller deck size, so think that alone makes it more consistent with energy making, compare to 99 cards in EDH decks. Aetherworks Marvel has higher chance of hitting something useful in Brawl than in a regular EDH.

That's true. But Rogue Refiner is an example of a card that has no impact on Brawl at all. Basically to start things off WoTC are being super lazy with any need to have an extra specialize ban list, as it just involves more of their time. Plus they have literally no idea what would need to be banned, they are waiting for the masses to test for them.
I haven't played the deck much, but made a few changes. Taken out some of the bigger casting spells in favor of cheaper ones.
It is actually a hard deck to play, as I find it's 3 vs 1 every time. Can't complain, once you start destroying everything, that's what you sign up for. You really feel like you are Nicol Bolas versus the Gatewatch.
Too be honest Dark Intimations was pretty bad. Never got the chance to cast it, always seems overpriced for what is happening. Pity as it's basically part of the name sake of the deck, but too many token strategies to make the sacrifice any good, and too few creatures in the deck to get value consistently. Plus The Scarab God and The Locust God return to hand anyway.
Ha yeah that happens to me whenever I play my Nicol Bolas deck. It's great in 1v1 but everyone starts to freak out in multiplayer. I like the idea of swapping out torrential gearhulk for demon of dark schemes. I felt the deck would benefit from a better reanimation package since everything's getting blown up. Maybe add in a liliana, death's majesty and a vizier of many faces? In my last game I ended up with Etali, Primal Storm and torrential gearhulk in my hand for the majority of the game and the real work came from kill spells and building a late game board with the scarab god.
I do like having gonti, lord of luxury in this deck as a nice early game play and on the ground deterrence with deathtouch. Also if he gets blown up I believe you can still cast the spell which is always nice.

The Locust God and The Scarab God ability to return to hand when dies, means that you can run them into your own mass removal if necessary.
Torrential Gearhulk gains a lot of value in this deck. Tetzimoc, Primal Death is a one-sided damnation.

So don't actually want to fork out for a Torrential Gearhulk, so playing Demon of Dark Schemes in that slot, which has been really good.
