This was fun, I can't wait for round 2. I love to do this kind of thing with my decks in general (building around one particular card) so doing it as part of a competition was really enjoyable.
Creativity/Originality: 3 Elemental Aggro with mold pile vibe and Mana Acc. The Inclusion of Torchling breaks the Tribal theme in a nod to the Ling familiy.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3 The ususal Mana dump and some lesser Tribal Interactions as well as tutorable. In addition to the Acceleration plan he functions as one of the top of the curve threats.
Synergy/Tuning: 3.5 A lot of Synergy comes from the fact that you are playing Tribal. Burn would have gone together well with the aggro vibe of the deck. Groundbreaker were very hard to cast without any Smokebraider.
Power/Capacity to win: 2 The deck has 61 Cards. The lack of Burn in such an aggressive Deck downs the power a lot. Groundbreaker are hard to cast. Running many cards only 2 or three times gives the deck an unfocused feel.
Interaction/Protection: 0.5 Anti Lifegain and 2x Red Command. The Deck really was aching for Burn.
Congratulations to the Winner and hope you had have fun everybody.
All of my decks run 61 cards because of fear of being decked in a slow game (my meta is very much control-oriented). Also, I don't really understand what you meant when you said that the deck needed burn. If my deck had run burn, I felt that it would have lost focus on the Thornling theme. Also, if you could please elaborate on how does running 2 or 3 of each cards make the deck feel "unfocused." Most decks run 2 or 3 cards and have a great record. I had no issues playtesting the deck on MWS. The groundbreakers had many ways out and were meant to only be a one turn strike from out of the blue for the win.
For all of these reasons, I urge a reconsideration of my score. Not necessarily a change, but I think that as you play this deck you will grow to love it.
Sure no problem, I had already noticed. Tribal is easy to spot, I guess it's more for people who have an extended list, Make Your Own Standard, Rainbow stairwell or some similar funky thing going on. Like if Anansi hadn't provided that flavourful background story, I don't think I would have necessarily spotted that.
...
Oh and Judging is coming along nicely if you all want to know, 15 decks (-1) is some work as you might imagine, but I'm having fun.
Problem is my girlfriend has been hogging the computer because of job searching (she's out of work at the end of this month :-/). I even printed out my template and have been using the old pen and paper; that's why it's taking so long, I should have my scoring later tonight though, tomorrow morning at the latest.
Cheers...
Wait a moment, then we have to post our judgins today or tomorrow morning? Because i haven't finished yet and i won't be able to access to a computer until tomorrow night, so I might have a problem here.
Sorry if it is so.

No no, I was just telling everybody when to expect my own scores, you have until tommorow midnight of course :).

EDIT: A note to novices of this thread. This is only a game, don't take any of the judges' ratings too emotionally. We only judge as we see it and tell you like it is, in the interest of raising the standard of deckbuilding and making better players of us all. Give yourselves the right to make mistakes and have an open mind, also remember that judges make mistakes too.

Look at Hammer, he participated in 6 rounds last year and won on his last try only, the last round of the season, and now he is a master, aren't you Hammer?
Hum hum, well without further ado, here are my ratings:
Creativity/Originality: 2.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Just a basic midrange creature based deck with some tempo and disruption thrown in, not terribly original. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 1.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling could be just another green beatstick and the deck would probably play the same. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Avoid Fate is there just for bounce and RFG removal? Cause Thornling comes with auto-protect built-in, so avoid Fate seems pretty narrow here.
- Putting Natural Order in means you had the opportunity to tinker with a toolbox approach; you did put the Elder in, but stopped there.
- 23 forest? Didn't want to try a few Treetop Village or some other non-basics? Power/Capacity to win: 2.5 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Thornling is the only winning condition, he's good but not without more support than I see here sorry. Interaction/Protection: 4 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Wickerbough Elder, Avoid Fate, Desert Twister, Plow under; some questionnable choices, but they're in there so... Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
Nothing in the deck. total: 13
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- A green LD deck with some acceleration and Thornling as a finisher, you don't see it often but it was expected here so a little bit original but not too creative. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2 How well does it use the selected card?
- Again replace Thornling as a win-con, and the deck would still run on all cylinders and maybe a bit better. There is a lot of mana acceleration though so a bit better since Thornling is mana hungry. Synergy/Tuning: 3 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Why Birds in mono-green wouldn't Fyndhorn Elves be better with Priest of Titania?
- Deranged Hermit? Another choice may have been better to support the elf theme more, maybe Ambush Commander for Priest abuse with Thornling, and to give you a 2nd win-con. Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Full-on LD can win of course, there is no question about it, but see the next category for why this deck didn't score higher. Interaction/Protection: 3 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Sort of okay, A lot of interaction is aimed at the opponent's lands; what if he's playing fast aggro? Sadly there is nothing VS creatures... Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nothing here. total: 15.5
Creativity/Originality: 4 How creative and original is your deck.
- Thornling-Doran synnergy, yea! Nice find. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4 How well does it use the selected card?
- Normaly Thornling has a limited Power output, but here, there is no limit but the colorless mana you have available, cool. So the deck cares about how the card is used. Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I like the defense into offense plan in here. To Arms! is funky, especially as a combat trick (and not just on defense)
- There's one or 2 choices you made that i'd like to question. Mainly about Treefolk Harbinger, why not play Crib Swap instead of Path to exile? I Know you already have Nameless inversion as fetchable removal, but still. Also why not put at least a couple of Wickerbough Elders as fetchables in the deck? Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- I feel that yes mostly vs other creature decks, control might eat you up though. Interaction/Protection: 3 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Nameless Inversion, Path to Exile and infest all deal with creatures fines but you have nothing VS artifact and enchantments. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nope. total: 18
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- Another Green LD deck with Thornling, see previous LD deck for explanations. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Well there is a bit more acceleration in here than the previous one so Thornling may be a little bit happier but that's it. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Pretty basic synnergy; nothing stands out much. Resistant creatures that do a great job of... resisting... Power/Capacity to win: 3.5 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Hard to say, LD is pulled back some and there are more creatures, a bit Dr Jekyl and Mr Hide; traffic jam at 4 and 5cc in the curve. Garruk as a second win-con also has some potential. Interaction/Protection: 2 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Sadly again not a lot, LD is not enough, you need to be able to deal with other stuff as well, I would not consider Cloudtresher to be good removal even if he can be a pain to some decks. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Niet. total: 13.5
Creativity/Originality: 3.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Green LD/disruption that is a bit more focused at to what it wants to do. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Huge Mana! Thornling likes it yes but there is a limit as to how much mana you can dump into him, I feel the mana is more in there for your high cost spells, that's not a bad strategy, but not focused on the card at hand. Thornling is still a good finisher though. Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Lots of things to do with the mana, Imagine being able to play Stunted Growth and Plow Under in the same turn, yowch!
- I really like Elephant Grass, that thing is not leaving soon either.
- I know you played only forests because of the lens, but a couple of Rishadan Ports wouldn't have hurt at all.
- The lone Planar Portal stands out as pretty random IMO. Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- The deck seems focused enough to accomplish what it sets out to do; is there enough defense to ward off early weenie rushes, maybe... Interaction/Protection: 4.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks. - Elephant Grass, Hail Storm, Molder, Tangle Wire. Pretty solid. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- no. total: 19.5
Creativity/Originality: 2.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- I sense a theme, to play once or twice, but gets somewhat boring fast. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2 How well does it use the selected card?
- What was the card of the week again? Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- One plan, not much support, aside from the flavour of the lings, the cards don't seem to belong together; not very synnegistic. Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Tough creatures yes, Garruk is there also. Interaction/Protection: 2.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- 4 counterspells is not enough to justify higher marks and that Fire/Ice is pretty lonely.
- Lings are all cool for redirections, shrouding, and making invulnerable though. Format/Thematic: 0 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
Not focused enough as a them to justify me giving you a point here sorry. total: 12.5
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- A mild attempt at a reanimator/Threshold/black fling strategy. The idea is there, but execution is questionnable. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2 How well does it use the selected card?
- Why would I want to sacrifice an indestructible guy? There are a lot better card choices for this type of strategy; Mongrel being one of them. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- There isn't enough reanimation for one. The threshold is not optimal, this deck could have been so much more...
- Why pick Ivy Elemental when the new kid in the block is better; Feral Hydra. Ah, he's an old war-buddy of Thornling?... got it... Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Well, the deck can come out aggro and squeeze out a win. Interaction/Protection: 1.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- No protection at all.
- Some interaction, mainly the Rites and Thornling. Format/Thematic: 0 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- nothing in the deck total: 12
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- Green LD suite with the added control of white; a little above average on the originality curve. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is a good finisher here. Board sweepers, finaly! Someone taking advantage of the indestructability... Synergy/Tuning: 3 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I like Moment's Peace to buy time.
- I don't like Soul's Majesty though; too late game for my taste. Harmonize would probably have been better maindeck.
- I wonder why there is no top of library manipulation considering all the shuffling going on... Power/Capacity to win: 3.5 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- As far as Control decks go, this is average, LD fetching gives you quality card draw if not quantity. Interaction/Protection: 4 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Sweepers, LD, Moment's peace... Austere Command for artifacts/enchantment is slow though. Format/Thematic: 0 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nothing to see here. total: 17
Creativity/Originality: 3.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Even though Anansi had all pointed us to a similar deck, and even though a tribal elemental deck had already been posted, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt ;)... Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4 How well does it use the selected card?
- The deck cares about using Thornling profusely. Synergy/Tuning: 3.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I like the Ceaseless Searblades.
- Braid of Fire is also pretty cool.
- Lure is nice touch and with 4, one is bound to stick, eh?
- Could have gone multicolor even with the braids, but chose to keep it simple, it might be a route to pursue if you ever build the deck and it starts to get boring.
- Ways to get card advantage are non-existant.
- Volcanic Geyser would have been so right as an additional finishing touch and gone so well with the name of the deck. Power/Capacity to win: 3.5 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Creature combat domination, but succeptible to control of course. Interaction/Protection: 3.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Naturalize, Desert Twister; more creature control would have helped here (something likeFlamekin Spitfiremaybe?). Format/Thematic: 1 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Elemental tribal. total: 19
Creativity/Originality: 3.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Crucible LD deck using shapeshifters as finishers, somewhat original. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 1 How well does it use the selected card?
- I know you were going for flavour, but this deck uses just one Thornling and it you wouldn't matter much if it was any other finisher. Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I really like some choices you made like Trade Routes and Rhystic Study.
- Slow motion is a nice touch and Constant Mists in almost unbeatable in this type of deck.
- Why no Zuran Orb? Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Yes, very well, though you have to be lucky with your Mists against fast aggro, I would have like to have seen some tutors here like Mystical Tutor or even better Muddle the Mixture (besides Mists, that last one would have fetched a few other key cards likeBoom/BustorLife From the Loam). Cheap burn could also be a problem without the aforementionned Orb. Interaction/Protection: 3.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Slow Motion and Constant Mists deal efficiently with creatures and creature combat damage, but not much else y'know... Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- I don't know that this is flavourful enough to warrant a point, sorry. total: 16
Creativity/Originality: 4.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Sometimes there's an idea so simple, you'd wish you'd thought of it, this is the one for that card, very original. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Very well. The card is crucial and fits like a glove, it's the whole point of the deck Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I like Darksteel Ingot in here, goes well with the Slayer and allows Thornling to keep on using its abilities, nifty.
- Flagstones of Trokair are also a nice touch after World Slayer, no Savannah or Temple Garden?
- Ensnaring Bridges I don't get though, they don't mesh with the rest of the deck, I don't see this deck emptying its hand that fast and they won't matter once you blow up everything... Power/Capacity to win: 3.5 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- The idea for the deck is also very deadly if you pull it off fast enough, with all the tutors in, it should help. One of the 2 pieces is indestructible though the other one is pricey, so I don't see this winning all the time, especially VS faster stuff. Interaction/Protection: 3.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Naturalize, then World Slayer to take care of the rest. There is no pinpoint easy removal of creatures, though some chumpblocking may buy you some time. Format/Thematic: 1 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Playing it, I was kinda psyched about fulfilling some kind of prophecy :link:... total: 21
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- Mid-Range rock kinda deck with Thornling playing the role of the standard tough creature. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is kind of essential and a few different cards try to make use of him. Synergy/Tuning: 3 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Average card choices.
- I like Beserk on Thornling.
- I don't like so many Worldly Tutors with only 10 critters though.
- I was thinking that some discard would have been cool in here, something like thoughtseize paired lateron to something like Liliana Vess maybe; she goes well with 4 Damnation. Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Damnation with Thornling is powerful stuff, but you might pray for Damnation if your creatures aren't coming soon. Interaction/Protection: 3.5 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Damnation, Krosan Grip, fetchable Maze of Ith. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nothing here. total: 16
Creativity/Originality: 2.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- RG Tribal elemental deck with emphasis on cheap elemental warriors. Kinda middle of the road; I've seen better. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is the high-end finisher; not much else to say, not using the possibilities of the card much. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- A bit half and half; Upwelling is nice.
- 20 lands is a bit thin, even with the smokebraiders.
- I don't get Incendiary Command much, lots of spells would have been much better, even something like Hurricane or Squall Line to at least be able to deal with flyers and deal some damage to the face. Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Very Aggro start can lead to victory but mid to late game is half and half, some synnergy with the boosting elemental/warrior plan, but the odds aren't so good. Interaction/Protection: 1 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Not much; the commands and... ?? Thorchling redirections and Thornling combat shenanigans so pretty thin. Format/Thematic: 1 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Tribal for the point. total: 12.5
Creativity/Originality: 4 How creative and original is your deck.
- 2 piece very reliable Lock-deck using known pieces with some unknown gems, and a wishboard toolbox; Very creative. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling combos nicely with lots of goodies in here, this deck cares about using ALL of Thornling's abilities; to great effect. Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- I really like the Sledge, the Scales a little less but it's still very much funky.
- The Living Wish Toolbox is always nice to play with.
- Acceleration but all on turn 3, no turn 1 or 2 plays.
- Why 1 Mirari's Wake please?
- Man-Lands in there? Like a couple of Nantuko Monestary maybe? Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Barring fast aggro, if this deck passes turn 5 or 6 it becomes very hard for opponents to get a foothold. Interaction/Protection: 4 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Magus, Austere Command, Scales, Sledge; all these try to wreck the opponent's day, but need time and mana; there are no cheap answers in the deck except Swords in the sideboard Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nada. total: 21

EDIT#2: @No Name Maddox: You're right about Chronozoa, After I playtested the deck some, I realized that with a couple of Paradox Hazes, I might get a lot of creatures but won't be able to attack much.
As For Energy Chamber you are right again, my bad for putting it in, see I had never played with it and thought it worked like Power Conduit in that you could put a +1/+1 on any creature... FAIL...
Note to myself: Read The Card ...
So yeah if I was to redo the deck I'd at least put something else, maybe some Boomerangs.
Primary and only casual rule: "any rule that is fine for the most part of the playgroup, is a fine rule". So any further thread with: "if somebody uses/does .... in a casual game, is it ethical/ok?", read the answer above.
- Being a "Johnny/Spike" means you like self-torture. You win often in casual, so everybody hates you; you loose often in competitive, so you hate yourself.
Look at Hammer, he participated in 6 rounds last year and won on his last try only, the last round of the season, and now he is a master, aren't you Hammer?
Master? Not sure about that. I just really enjoy designing crazy decks.
Creativity/Originality: 2.5 How creative and original is your deck.
- As others have said, not much too different or new here. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- You do have a bunch of acceleration to help beef up thorny, so pretty good. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Avoid Fate seems weak, but maybe you face a lot of bounce in your area? I guess that really is Thronling's only weakness
- love the wickerboughs, I'm glad people are starting to catch onto how great these guys are
Power/Capacity to win: 3.5 Can the deck deliver the goods? - Your curve is a little high, but you do have a lot of powerful cards that can just wreck people, like plow under
Interaction/Protection: 3 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- you have artifact/enchantment hate taken care of, land disruption too, but adding stuff like oblivion stone would have made sense here Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
Nothing in the deck.
Creativity/Originality: 4 How creative and original is your deck.
- Green land destruction with Thornling as the finisher. Sounds good to me. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2 How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is a good finisher, but I have wonder if some other fatty would do better here. His indestructibility is rendered moot since you won't be letting your opponent get to 4 mana anyway Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Deranged Hermit? This is the card that I really can't understand here. Otherwise, solid. Love the ports here.
Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Your curve is solid, and your land kill looks very good to me.
Interaction/Protection: 1 No creature kill at all, purely focused on land kill.
Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- Nothing here. total: 15
Creativity/Originality: 5 How creative and original is your deck.
- Thornling + castle, Thornling + Doran, love it! Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4 How well does it use the selected card?
- with castle and Doran, thornling's power is fully unleashed
Synergy/Tuning: 3.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- could use some artifact/enchantment kill, but otherwise ok
- don't understand the harbingers here either Power/Capacity to win: 3 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- your curve is very good and you have a lot of defense, so you should be able to last to the late game for the win Interaction/Protection: 4 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- lots of efficient creature kill, so things look good. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- None. total: 19.5
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- A weird ramp/land D/aggro concoction
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 1 How well does it use the selected card?
- I really hate the oversouls in here, who will often be your finisher of choice. I mean, if you have both in your hand, which would you play? Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
-Not sure why Blasto is in here. He belongs in an all out aggro build. Could use some creature kill.
Power/Capacity to win: 2.5 - poor curve, could use some more 2 drops.
Interaction/Protection: 0 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
-No creature kill or artifact/enchantment hate Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- none
Creativity/Originality: 4 How creative and original is your deck.
- Green control deck with LD focus. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5 How well does it use the selected card?
- Lens + thornling are friends, but again, some other big green beatstick would work. Synergy/Tuning: 2 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- stunted growth? Why? Where are your creature control elements like Oblivion stone? No early game at all. Power/Capacity to win: 2 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- I really hate the fact that you have only one play before turn 2 here. What about 4 x traproot kami? He would love this deck. Interaction/Protection: 3 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks. - The 2 molders seem random, I would rather have wickerbough elders. Format/Thematic: 0 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour

Creativity/Originality: 2.5 How creative and original is your deck.
All the 'lings in one pile. Interesting I guess. Not much else though. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 1 How well does it use the selected card?
Thornling and his brothers are your beaters, but who's to say which one is the best in here? Depends on the matchup I suppose. Synergy/Tuning: 2.5 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Fire/Ice is fantastic, but why only one?
- what is the point of Garruk here? Power/Capacity to win: 1 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- curve is awful. You are going to have hands with 3 lings in it at any given point. Interaction/Protection: 1 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Fire/Ice and Torchling are your only creature control. Not nearly enough. Format/Thematic: 1 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
- hey, at least you can say that you built a deck with all 3 lings in it. total: 9
Creativity/Originality: 3.5 How creative and original is your deck.
Graveyard recursion+fast mana+threshold. I would have never considered attempting this. Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2 How well does it use the selected card?
Hmmm... well, he is your biggest creature, but sacrificing him seems bad. Recurring with the vigor mortis seems fun, but you have no consisitent way of getting him into your 'yard. Synergy/Tuning: 2 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- No kill spells, and you are playing black, the best colour for spot removal?
- needs more acceleration as well, 4 BOP isn't enough and the rituals don't last long enough to really help Thorny. Power/Capacity to win: 2 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- see above, no sustained acceleration, no way to get Thorny into yard, weird assortment of creatures. Interaction/Protection: 1 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
-No creature kill, no artifact/enchantment kill Format/Thematic: 0 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour
none. total: 10.5
Creativity/Originality: 3 How creative and original is your deck.
- Straight up G/W control deck with plenty of control elements, including mass creature kill and land D Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4 How well does it use the selected card?
- He is the man here, surviving all of your wraths and beating for the win. Synergy/Tuning: 4 How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Soul's majesty is a really bad card, even here. I would rather play Harmonize any day of the week.
- Got to love STEve
- Moment's peace is one of greens best ever casual cards IMHO, so good choice Power/Capacity to win: 4 Can the deck deliver the goods?
- lots of mana accel, creature kill, land destruction. It seems like you have all of your bases covered here.
- Ghostly prison + land destruction is pure evil Interaction/Protection: 2 How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- lots of creature control, but little in way of dealing with enchantments/artifacts. Format/Thematic: 0 (can't go over 25) 1 point for any format adherence; 1 point for incorporation of theme/flavour

Note that the most Influence of your Power Score is due to the Inability to deal halfway realibly with blockers in an aggro Deck. Burn is also the best way to go here as it will also double up on getting extra oomph mid to late game to push through the Win over a stabilized Board.
I have to veto the lost Focus of the Thornling Theme. First of all is your Use of the Contest Card loose and could even theoretically be replaced with any other Finsher (which holds true to many Decks of this rounds however - myself not execluded). Second is the Deck you entered the Contest with obviously aggresive and sligh realted. Removal and Burn especially in red Aggro Builds are an essential Part of theese Archetypes since the emergence of theese types of Decks and are a crucial Part of the Success of these Decks.
As for the Unfocused Feel (which was Minor compared to the lacking Burn anyways): This Part would have not been weighty if you would have played your Tutor 4of instead and would not have constructed the Deck to be this Aggro-Minded. As it is though the Deck feels like it wants to knock over the opponent quick due to the aggresive Cards but does't really know how. I couldn't avoid the feeling of a rather dull Deck that cares more for having a Tribal Theme going on than carrying out a Strategy and judged accordingly.
The reason I mentioned the groundbreaker again there was becasue it stuck most in my Mind as maniphestation of this Impression. It's more in here becasue it is an Elemental and less thought was given in how to accomplish tripple G in turn 3 whcih by nature was the best turn for the Deck to swing for 6 with the 6/1 becasue the probability of your OP both being tapped out and having no answer just is bigger early Games than Later.
The Issue of 61 cards also was only a Minor one though in my Opinion important one to enter the score. It is one of the most agreed upon Rule for warranting Maximum Efficency to stick to the Minimum of Cards you can. Yes I know a good deck won't suddenly become bad becasue you add one card extra. However the afformentioned guideline is so basic and important that I think its Violation justifies its serious consideration for going into the score. I do not think the argument of "casual we don't need to be so strict here" holds value as this issue is the most outside line to include every Rules of how the Game works behind it. If anything the reason to be strict on this is even strengthened by the fact its Casual - If not we whom then is to hold up the Correctness for this in order to spread magic as it is supposed to work?
I kow you haven't asked for this but I felt this needed of my chest in context of this. Considering your argument in particular: Adding one additional Card to your deck will do absolutely nothing against Control Decks. Even if you are playing some bad Turbo Sasis Version that that is soley based upon having you start then freeze everything until the decks are drewn you would always have the option of going for a Mulligan Victory. The one case when your one extra card will be the reason you win pops up only once in a million and thisway can't be considered tech especially if you weigh up the loss of probability to drew certain cards (which is already low for the 2 offs). And just becasue oyur Library has one more Card then your opponent's one doesn't add up attriton for you neither: Attrition is creatued by resuable effects and by perfect Mana exploitation in Late Game as well as simply creating CardAdvantage - All of the Things Aggro Decks by nature are lacking and don't achieve neither by adding one extra card. Aggro wnats to push through that Damage and to come back on this: somewhere in the Games with that Deck you just wish you had some burn spells to shot free the way to the dome.
Ok thanks I understand much better now and will incorporate some fun new ideas next time. I was seeing this contest as too linearly. Now to think outside the box!
Ok thanks I understand much better now and will incorporate some fun new ideas next time. I was seeing this contest as too linearly. Now to think outside the box!
That's a good way to put it actually.
A good way to get ahead is to try to think of something original. Sometimes it's harder because of card limitations, sometimes it's easier. Just throwing cards for fun and calling it a deck (and I'm not pointing anybody in particular here) can make for a fullfilling casual experience at the table, but will not get you a lot of points.
A deck that is trying to be the next "Big Idea" will always get noticed.
A deck that uses old ideas in new ways will also invite the same type of scrutiny.
Though creativity and originality are rated in the first category, I think they influence overall scoring more than one might think; new ideas will almost always warrant unorthodox card choices, evolve unheard-of synergies, and thread new paths to victory.
Judges are just begging to be impressed, that's all.
The cards like the commonly seen birds of paradise are commonly seen for a reason. A deck that uses old established ideas that have proven to be good tends to attempt to be good. A deck that tries to find new synergies isn't neccesarily better. Making something different isn't neccesarily better in many senses.
That said, this is casual. So new ideas are highly valued and welcomed.

horray :-). I'm glad the judges enjoyed the way I did my deck description. I've PMed the head judge, fdtori, with my card submission. I hope everyone has fun with it.
cheers to Anansi, your submission was as great as allways.
2nd place - awesome, for less than an hour 'work'.
some notes for jugdges:
- the Wake was a random one off, because I like the card. @ Hammer: complaining my curve is to high and then say I need more of a 5cc card makes me go :eyebrow:.
- Sapling should not draw cards but be a second indestructible creature, and it's like the cheapest we have atm.
- Scales are not ment to be consitant.
- I admit the curve is to high, pro'ly the cheaper option would have been better...
@ fdtori: is it possible that the submission time for r2 either starts within the next 20h or that it lasts 'til next sunday? I want to try my luck again.

Sorry if my critique was unclear.
-The bottom line is that your build had way too high a mana curve no matter how many copies of wake that you played. What I should have recommended was cutting the wakes altogether.
- I like the saplings, but with 3 of him in the deck, there was less focus on Thornling since you can use both for your combos.
- I admit that I absolutely hate coin flip cards. I can see how you are going for casual here, but there is a difference between casual fun (worldslayer) and casual jank that should not go into any deck.
I was going to wait till tonight to start round 2, but heck I've had Anansi's choice since yesterday and I figure some of you might have more computer time on sundays anyway. So here goes...

horrible card choice... forces to play domain and forces to play very expensive spells only other option that comes to my mind atm is sunburst, but there are only 7 cards with cmc < 5. ... lets see what we can do with this. *frown*
Accel, stall and disrupt, 'til you have the Hand and Domain* out and can play the Grozoth. Search for the rest of the 9cc cards. Next turn play the Myojin and drop the rest 'til the next eot of the op (exact time of activation depends on the op) -> Win.
* by Domain I mean WUBRG, and you can achieve that by either getting one of each basic land into play or any 5 lands + the Omen.
Gargoyle, Reya and the Spirt are played to add a divesrity of threads, but could be Leviathans as well. Only the Gargoyle is more or less vital to prevent ***s from ruining your day.
I don't recommend playing this in multiplayer or against a MUC deck and it's a bit risky anyways. Target audience for the deck is Timmy/Johnny with a tiny splash Spike.
note for judges: Vintage legal (no point expected) , no theme (no point expected)
Edit: I swear that I was editing my post to make my deck while Hammer and kruemel posted their decks. but I somehow expected shenanigans like that and it only proves my first paragraph.
I for one found this card- Fist of Suns to be an excellent choice. It allows for some very synergistical strategies with some more powerful spells and some lesser used cards. I combined fatty creatures like Progenitus with some of the best targeted removal spells like Path to Exile. The biggest issue with old Proggy is his immense cost, along with the other fatties of my deck. I used the Fist to reduce their costs to a more manageable WUBRG. To achieve this, as opposed to taking the standard Domain approach, I only used W/G lands and that is where some of the tricks lie.
Progenitus was added, mainly to be whimsical and also due to the flavor of the embodiment of 5 colors being channeled at once. Removal spells like Oblivion Ring help, however I initially found this deck to run out of steam very quickly. So then I decided to add Greater Good for more fun interactions.
- Bringer of the Red Dawn- Takes Pesky Creatures and comboes with Greater Good to get card advantage in exchange for an opponent's creature
- Progenitus- Draw 10 and the Hydra goes back in the deck.
Overall, this was a fun deck to create and I am sure that while testing, you will come to adopt this deck for your very own Metagame.
This is a super slow combo deck intended mostly for multiplayer
Main combo: Play grozoth with fist, fill your hand with fatties + myojin. Next turn, play myojin and dump as many fatties into play as you wish.
Second combo: erratic explosion flipping over any of my 9 mana cards
Card selection:
Grozoth: big beater that searches for combo pieces or Plague wind if necessary
Slice and dice: kill hordes of weenies or cycle to kill all of the spirits that you have given out with your orchards
Leviathan+dragon: finishers of choice
Suncrusher: Beatstick who can also blow up annoying creatures
Fabricate: Search for the fist, leviathan, prism, or artifact land if desperate
The nicest thing is that since the introduction of conflux, I can use all of my lands as the only true fixers here
sorry you don't like the card blutsau. Part of the reason I picked it was because it is tough to work with, and I wanted to see what this creative group could do with it. I was going to submit a backup along with it in case it wasn't acceptable, but none popped to mind. I'm not eligible for this round, but just to help people get thinking about the card... well I guess I'll fix this thing and turn it into a submission
I am such a Timmy. I want to win big, and splashy, and thoroughly.
I want to play hypnox and reiver demon from my hand for 5 mana
I want to set up the top cards of my library to chain hypergenesis brilliant ultimatum and all sun's dawn. because I want to play spells too huge to see play without fist of the suns.
well it still isn't as good as I want it to be. hopefully I'll have time later to tune it a bit more.
I'm not eligible for this round, but just to help people get thinking about the card...
Yes you are, if you wish of course, there are no restrictions that says a judge can't participate, so it's up to you. If you do, just don't rate your own deck.
this is not a good deck. It is not well tuned, doesn't interact much with your opponent and needs lots of luck to work properly before you are killed horribly, but I post it to get people thinking about what can be done with the fist of the suns.
Nice of you to give counsel, but again you should tune it, you do have a reputation to uphold ;).
I too was on the fence about Fist, and I almost asked you to pick another one, but I thought your reasons for wanting the card were good, it is a harder card; it does try to force you into a corner, design-wise, so finding something original should be a good test IMO.
Also I gotta leave some leeway to the winner, this being the only prize y'know...

The idea is to accelerate with a lot of mana elves (and non elves) while drawing cards off archdruid and glimpse until you find the fist, you use the leafcaller to make sure you have mana of any color and then cast conflux to search for any myojin you see fit, then if you go bored you can finish your opponent with a torrent of fire.
Forum auto logout ate the deck once, hopefully I get it out quickly enough this time. This is very tricky to do and especially to do something original. My idea is to combine fist of the suns with edgewalker such that all the more expensive clerics cost only RGU. This is probably not a good idea, but at least I'd imagine nobody else would come up with it. Oh I can judge, but good gravy would this thing be tough to judge.
Ehh I was just trying to do something other than the obvious ridiculously expensive tactic. It's already been done in the decks that went before me, so I just looked at what else could conceivably work with it. I have no illusions about scoring anything except for maybe sheer mad creativity with it. Mostly I wasn't even going to participate in this round and said, hey edgewalker, why not? I've got no better ideas that hadn't already been done by the time I noticed the thread had updated. I actually did have an idea that would fix the problem you suggested I think, but I'm not sure how celestial dawn interacts with the fist. Huh I should have just read the oracle rulings on the card. It does work Hmmm deck editing again. It's still probably a horrible idea, but it's MY horrible idea, which makes it special to me, and "special" to anyone else usually.
A little on the heavy side, as one might expect, but acceleration and draw should help it along nicely.
I put 4 Tinkers in, but I don't think that it makes the deck broken by any stretch of the imagination. It just makes it hum nicely...
Once Lifeline hits play, it can be easy to get WUBRG for Fist with either Composite Golem or Phyrexian Altar.
Wishboard is for catch-all answers and fatty abuse once Fist is a factor. Bonus is almost all the creatures in there become ridiculous with Lifeline and High Market/Altar.
This card was a lot harder to build around than I thought.
I'm happy I finally get to put Panglacial Wurm in a deck, Yea !! Between the Elders, Expanse, Tinkers and Simulacrum as search effects, I shouldn't have a problem playing them. Lifeline also makes sure they stick.

Sincerely,
MP28
Wait a moment, then we have to post our judgins today or tomorrow morning? Because i haven't finished yet and i won't be able to access to a computer until tomorrow night, so I might have a problem here.
Sorry if it is so.
No no, I was just telling everybody when to expect my own scores, you have until tommorow midnight of course :).

Creativity/Originality: 2.5
How creative and original is your deck.
- Just a basic midrange creature based deck with some tempo and disruption thrown in, not terribly original.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 1.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling could be just another green beatstick and the deck would probably play the same.
Synergy/Tuning: 2.5
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 2.5
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Thornling is the only winning condition, he's good but not without more support than I see here sorry.
Interaction/Protection: 4

Creativity/Originality: 3
How creative and original is your deck.
- A green LD deck with some acceleration and Thornling as a finisher, you don't see it often but it was expected here so a little bit original but not too creative.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2
How well does it use the selected card?
- Again replace Thornling as a win-con, and the deck would still run on all cylinders and maybe a bit better. There is a lot of mana acceleration though so a bit better since Thornling is mana hungry.
Synergy/Tuning: 3
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 4
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Full-on LD can win of course, there is no question about it, but see the next category for why this deck didn't score higher.
Interaction/Protection: 3
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Sort of okay, A lot of interaction is aimed at the opponent's lands; what if he's playing fast aggro? Sadly there is nothing VS creatures...

How creative and original is your deck.
- Thornling-Doran synnergy, yea! Nice find.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4
How well does it use the selected card?
- Normaly Thornling has a limited Power output, but here, there is no limit but the colorless mana you have available, cool. So the deck cares about how the card is used.
Synergy/Tuning: 4
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 3
Can the deck deliver the goods?

- Another Green LD deck with Thornling, see previous LD deck for explanations.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Well there is a bit more acceleration in here than the previous one so Thornling may be a little bit happier but that's it.
Synergy/Tuning: 2.5
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Pretty basic synnergy; nothing stands out much. Resistant creatures that do a great job of... resisting...
Power/Capacity to win: 3.5
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Hard to say, LD is pulled back some and there are more creatures, a bit Dr Jekyl and Mr Hide; traffic jam at 4 and 5cc in the curve. Garruk as a second win-con also has some potential.
Interaction/Protection: 2
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.

- Green LD/disruption that is a bit more focused at to what it wants to do.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Huge Mana! Thornling likes it yes but there is a limit as to how much mana you can dump into him, I feel the mana is more in there for your high cost spells, that's not a bad strategy, but not focused on the card at hand. Thornling is still a good finisher though.
Synergy/Tuning: 4
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.

How creative and original is your deck.
- Sometimes there's an idea so simple, you'd wish you'd thought of it, this is the one for that card, very original.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 4.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Very well. The card is crucial and fits like a glove, it's the whole point of the deck
Synergy/Tuning: 4
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 3.5
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- The idea for the deck is also very deadly if you pull it off fast enough, with all the tutors in, it should help. One of the 2 pieces is indestructible though the other one is pricey, so I don't see this winning all the time, especially VS faster stuff.
Interaction/Protection: 3.5
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Naturalize, then World Slayer to take care of the rest. There is no pinpoint easy removal of creatures, though some chumpblocking may buy you some time.

How creative and original is your deck.
- Mid-Range rock kinda deck with Thornling playing the role of the standard tough creature.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 3.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is kind of essential and a few different cards try to make use of him.
Synergy/Tuning: 3
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 3
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Damnation with Thornling is powerful stuff, but you might pray for Damnation if your creatures aren't coming soon.

Creativity/Originality: 2.5
How creative and original is your deck.
- RG Tribal elemental deck with emphasis on cheap elemental warriors. Kinda middle of the road; I've seen better.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling is the high-end finisher; not much else to say, not using the possibilities of the card much.
Synergy/Tuning: 2.5
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 3
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Very Aggro start can lead to victory but mid to late game is half and half, some synnergy with the boosting elemental/warrior plan, but the odds aren't so good.
Interaction/Protection: 1
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
- Not much; the commands and... ?? Thorchling redirections and Thornling combat shenanigans so pretty thin.

- 2 piece very reliable Lock-deck using known pieces with some unknown gems, and a wishboard toolbox; Very creative.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 5
How well does it use the selected card?
- Thornling combos nicely with lots of goodies in here, this deck cares about using ALL of Thornling's abilities; to great effect.
Synergy/Tuning: 4
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
Power/Capacity to win: 4

- Barring fast aggro, if this deck passes turn 5 or 6 it becomes very hard for opponents to get a foothold.

Master? Not sure about that. I just really enjoy designing crazy decks.

How creative and original is your deck.

Effectiveness/Card adherence: 2.5
How well does it use the selected card?
- You do have a bunch of acceleration to help beef up thorny, so pretty good.
Synergy/Tuning: 2.5
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
- Avoid Fate seems weak, but maybe you face a lot of bounce in your area? I guess that really is Thronling's only weakness
- love the wickerboughs, I'm glad people are starting to catch onto how great these guys are
Power/Capacity to win: 3.5
Can the deck deliver the goods?
- Your curve is a little high, but you do have a lot of powerful cards that can just wreck people, like plow under

Deranged Hermit? This is the card that I really can't understand here. Otherwise, solid. Love the ports here.

All done now. Great job everyone.
Ok thanks I understand much better now and will incorporate some fun new ideas next time. I was seeing this contest as too linearly. Now to think outside the box!
Thanks for the advice,
MP28
That said, this is casual. So new ideas are highly valued and welcomed.

2/5
Looks like some kind of a green control deck, but it
doesn't look very focused really, specially not very focused on Thornling.
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 0 to 5 points
How well does it use the selected card?
3: Well, it does have some acceleration and can use Thornling kind of well,
but it wouldn't really matter if it just were any other green big creature
Synergy/Tuning: 0 to 5 points
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.
3: Again, i didn't find anything that really combined with thornling but the
accelerators, thus i gave you some extra points
Power/Capacity to win: 0 to 5 points
Can the deck deliver the goods?
3: I don't know, it seems kind of unpreppared for a fast aggro/burn deck, and also
weak agains control, if you don't have thornling it's kind of difficult to win, but since you have
some answers to anything (desert twister) it could be...
Interaction/Protection: 0 to 5 points
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks.
3 Well, just as i said before, you have desert twister, ways to recurr it and elders
but somehow it doesn't look like it would defense itself quite well.

4 Semi-elves with land destruction and thornling, for some strange reason i like it
Effectiveness/Card adherence: 0 to 5 points

3. It can put thornling on the playfield quite fast, but nothing that interacts with it besides that.
Synergy/Tuning: 0 to 5 points

3: Land destruction and elves to win fast with a Thornling or some squirrels? It seems that it works, if just those bird were anything else...
Power/Capacity to win: 0 to 5 points
Can the deck deliver the goods?
4: Yes i thing it can, destroying lands from turn 2 and playing a bunch of mana elves are always good strategies from what i can remember
Interaction/Protection: 0 to 5 points
How well does the deck interact and deal with other decks:
2: Well, if your opponent lays something on the playfield, i fear that this deck cannot do much to combat it, it just attacks lands and players.

Effectiveness/Card adherence: 0 to 5 points
How well does it use the selected card?
4 Well, it combines Doran with Thornling to boost it's thoughness as much as it can, some castles to make even more damage
and mana birds who are really amazing with doran oddly.
Synergy/Tuning: 0 to 5 points
How well do the cards combine in the deck; elegance and card selection.

casual deck construction contest season 3:
http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=189597
my trade thread:
http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=239539
Anansi's card choice is: Fist of Suns !
Let me all see you try to break that one.
You have until sunday evening of next week (march 29).
Don't forget to also indicate in your posts if you can guest judge.
Good luck.

Budget change would include a change of Tutors (Grim -> Diabolic Tutor, Demonic & Vampirc -> Beseech the Queen), Disruption (Seize -> Distress) and lands (duals -> Savage Lands & Pine Barrens) and maybe dropping the Spirt & Reya for more Leviathans.
note for judges: Vintage legal (no point expected) , no theme (no point expected)

Some Easy Mana Combos:
- Joiner Adept + Fist of the Suns(Any five lands to play a spell)
- Crystal Quarry+ Fist of the Suns (An easy way to generate WUBRG
- Mycosynth Lattice + Fist of the Suns (Tap 5 to play a spell)
I then added the Bringer cycle from Mirrodin, because with all these ways to generate 5 colors or to play cheap spells - Why not have a little fun?
- Bringer of the White Dawn- Combos well with the Lattice to return any permanent from my graveyard to play.
- Bringer of the Blue Dawn- Card Advantage/Beater
- Bringer of the Black Dawn- Recurrable Tutor if needed
- Bringer of the Red Dawn- Takes Pesky Creatures
- Bringer of the Green Dawn- Creates tokens

The nicest thing is that since the introduction of conflux, I can use all of my lands as the only true fixers here
Edit: Forgot 4 lands!
I'm not eligible for this round, but just to help people get thinking about the card...well I guess I'll fix this thing and turn it into a submission2 savana

Yes you are, if you wish of course, there are no restrictions that says a judge can't participate, so it's up to you. If you do, just don't rate your own deck.
