- Remember to always post the updated decklist, including votes at the end of your post. If you don't, any cards additions or votes in it will be ignored. (If you get 'nathed, you can edit your post.)
- This GMAD follows the announced banned/restricted list.
- Once the deck has clearly defined colors, avoid suggesting off-color cards unless there's really a good reason to splash for them.
- Decks will end up with 60 cards, unless there's a particular reason not to (f.e. building around Battle of Wits or format restrictions).
- The deck contains 40% basic lands from the beginning to ensure a playable deck. If you suggest a land, an according number of basics will be cut.
- Cards can be added until the list is 15 cards over the target size. From then on, cards can only be removed.
- You can vote to remove cards currently in the deck at any time. You have to explain all suggested cuts. A card with three negative votes is cut.
- A vote to keep a card cancels a vote to cut a card.
As I am a control freak (see avatar) and I can't remember a control based GMAD for some time for this round I choose:
This GMAD will follow the vintage restricted list. No single card over $20
No playset over $40
I know there has been a high number of budget restrictions recently but I have a playset of Portcullis sitting around just waiting to be made into a deck. I often like the GMAD builds and want to build them yet they are out of my group's budget restrictions (<$200). Don't worry if it ends up going over $200 total as I will make any necessary changes.
so, with Portcullis as our "main focus" (i've seen how "main focus" often go out the window when other cards get added... *looks at the 'Magistrate's Scepter' and 'Legacy Weapon' gmads :/), so this deck, we'll want to keep out critters on the field, and their's off.
how can we do that? we can have fun with the "creature lock down" with ECHO!
(and all the standard/extended players are looking at me, the pre-mirrodin Legacy player like wtf?)
4 Avalanche Riders, they swoop in, frag a land, swing for 2, then can be un-echo'd to make room for another creature.
SELVAXRI! King of Misfortune & Master of Rocket Launchers "Do ya feel lucky? Because you'd better start runnin' while you still can." 375 Misfortune {+3 signed AP's} & 104 Rocket Launcher (41 AQ/ 63 Rev) Edgar Rice Burroughs, forgotten legend of the word.
I figure Nekrataal has amazing synergy here because it can bypass portcullis restrictions (Portcullis has a double check system: first on trigger and then on resolution). because Nekrataal will remove the creature cap before resolution, it will persist. Even better, if the cap still exists, nekrataal gets tucked away to preempt any creature of theirs should the portcullis die.

Forbidden Orchards could work here. It is nice if we end up going with lots of colors. And the tokens are good with Portcullis, either getting exiled immediately or building up to the two-creature limit so the other players can't play something more threatening.
I'm thinking along the same lines, and it makes my head hurt. I'd like to know if Leonin Relic-Warder could combo in some way. With Port out, (and enough creatures to trigger Port) play the Warder, and set up triggers so Port and Warder take turns flickering each other. Then use (infinite?) ETB triggers with something like Sparkmage Apprentice to kill everyone else. But I don't know if it works like that.
Edit: I think it'd work with Oblivion Ring. Port exiles Warder, Ring exiles Port, Warder exiles Ring, and so on. They go around in succession and you get the ETB triggers from the creatures stuck in the Port. But that'd be a completely different deck, probably. Now I want to try making this...

it would more go like this:
Warder behind port, o-ring rfgs port --> port guys come in (including warder), warder rfgs o-ring, port comes in.
Because the port doesn't see the mass of creatures come in, it can't rfg any of them, so your loop doesn't work.
EDIT: It is now 1:15am here, so i'll take advantage of the new day with another suggestion.
I realized that Gilded Drake is obscene in this deck. with port online, it is "1U: gain control of target creature". It came down to me adding either the drake or mulldrifter (evoke is very abusable in this deck), and the drake won out.
So in go 3 (4 would go over the $40 cap).

Damn, Venser, the Sojourner is out of price range (could add one but wouldn't be worth it at one) but could really see some cool plays going with it in there.
Well, for today comes a rather boring card but great card. Sol Ring.
Wow I gotta say I didn't expect so many creatures in this deck. Not going to suggest we remove any yet. Just that in case you have never used a portcullis before you may not appreciate how quickly that two creature limit is reached. Now if we can abuse that fact all the better. Great suggestions so far
yah the planeswalker jace cant come to us, but the legendary version can do some help, if he backs, you can bounce a permanent, also helps to some control mid game as a "counterspell"/bounce, i add 2 only because its legendary, also he can bounce to us the portcullis to make all our creatures come into play and trigger again.
Also, creatures that don't enter the battlefield are great!
Exactly my thought when I saw portcullis Therefore I will add 4x Chimeric Idol. Since this artifact becomes a creature, it never enters the battlefield as a creature, and thus gets by portcullis, allowing us to have more creatures than our opponents. It also allows for some fun shenanigans with our 187 creatures, allowing us to get a double activation out of them with the right circumstances. All of the man lands work the same way
We're getting way too full on creatures for anything thats supposed to be a 'control' deck. I love how most of these GMAD's end up focusing only on the card itself, and little on what any of the 'theme' or other intent of the maker.
Ah well.

Keeping our mana base u/b seems best, we get the removal to keep the opponents numbers down and counters to protect everything else.
That said, three Evacuation to further muck around with things, and let our ETB creatures have a greater effect.
It looks like we're safely in Grixis colors, and since we need a tutor for Portcullis, I'll add 4 Clutch of the Undercity. Since it transmutes for 4, perhaps we can lower our 4CMC creatures by 1~2 counts as well? Right now the 4CMC slot is a little too full.
I'm also placing a vote against Avalanche Riders. The card was added early and the deck hasn't evolved to go along with it so well. The land destruction looks irrelevant when we have Venser, Shaper Savant and Clutch of the Undercity, and while I understand the Echo argument, it seems to be a win-more situation. Do we really have the luxury of saying "to make more room for another creature" if we're playing against a deck with a decent number of creatures and removal? (i.e. half the decks out there) I'd rather have this slot be more removal/disruption toward creatures/permanents.
We're getting a little too close to 75 already, if we don't want this to play out like the last few remember to start landing votes against cards, even if it means withholding your own additions to help the deck shape better.
Vote against Riders as it seems to have weak and disjointed interaction with the deck. that makes 3 and out it goes
While I love the concept of Phasing guys in Portcullis, we should be hitting the cap much too easily for them to be viable, especially one as high costing and with as low a payout as breezekeeper, so a vote against it there.
With the addition of venser, I think we can lower the Man-o'-War count.
Vote against Evacuation. It's only utility in the current build is to sweep away a build-up of shrouded baddies. There are better ways to do this that don't take portcullis offline.

Shadowwolf: I wonder what cards you are referring to that are better than the Chimeric Idol but fill the same role? Must be slipping my memory, but I will gladly change my card if you present a good replacement. I like the idol because it's colorless and isn't really a creature. The colorless is important because I think this deck would be fun to stick with grixis colors. I really like FTK in this deck with its ETB ability, so I will vote to keep FTK and negate that vote. I do think avalanche riders isn't the best anymore so I will put a 3rd vote against that so it is removed. I will also vote against evacuation. Maybe I'm missing something but with portcullis in play there really shouldn't be that many creatures in play very often, so evacuation seems subpar compared to the other targetted bounce we have like man o war, clutch, and venser.

I'll actually remove my own addition, I need to not add cards right when I wake up.
Voting against Chimeric Idol and Breezekeeper, and voting to decrease Man-o'-War. Adding 4 Hunted Horror, because unless I'm mistaken, if timed right it can create a huge field advantage, and in addition the tokens won't come back if Portcullis bites the dust.
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

Don't get why you guys are voting out Chimeric Idol, it seems like the perfect fit for this deck. It's also almost immune to all sorcery speed removal. I also feel man o war is very strong in this deck, it interacts great with the portcullis, so I'm gonna vote to keep it at 4 copies and negate one of those votes. I do agree with removing the breezekeeper though, so I'll put the 3rd vote against that.

My guess would be, in addition to my belief that there are better options of like design, that while it is a "0" mana activation cost, it does come with the stipent of tapping all lands for activation. While this is not immediately a problem, since 'on the attack' we're hoping to have tapped out anyway, but it has potential inherent problems of its own if we need to use it as a blocker and want to keep mana open for any form of removal or counter spell. (But it looks like we're not really running a control deck, so thats not all that big an issue.)
Tl;dr, it has the potential to limit the use of other cards in the deck. (If, admitedly, not the worst limitation, but enough that its irksome to me.)
