Hey everyone, relatively new to the forum. I've gotten such great advice reading through some of these threads, and was hoping to get a bit of advice on a deck that I'm trying to revamp. A brief backstory:
I had a red/green deck from back in the day which I used as a combo direct damage (ie. Disintegrate, Rolling Thunder, Lava Burst) and big gun (ie. Craw Wurm, Fangren Hunter type creatures) deck...with some powerups included (ie. Giant Growth, Brute Strength). This deck got a bit stale (although it was quite effective), and one day I came across the incarnations Anger and Brawn. I was intrigued by their graveyard abilities and seeing how none of my friends were playing Grave Hate cards, I decided to incorporate them. However, I kept some of the direct damage and big creatures in, and really only incorporated two cards that helped me get Anger and Brawn into my graveyard: Wild Mongrel and Surge of Strength. Needless to say, the deck was too slow and ineffective, and I abandoned it years ago.
I came across the deck while trying to revamp an old landwalk deck and decided to work on it a bit as my playing partners still play no Grave Hate cards. I realized that I completely overlooked Genesis which I now plan to incorporate. I would say the goal of this deck for me is to obviously get Anger, Brawn and Genesis into the graveyard as quickly as possible either through discard cards or through combat, and then focus on bringing out creatures that I can pump up with Giant Growth-type instants and overwhelm opponents. Ideally, many of these cards could return to my hand after entering the graveyard from anywhere through Genesis, or entering the graveyard from the battlefield by their own inherent abilities (Shivan Phoenix). After an exhaustive search, I found quite a few cards that I feel could work, but was hoping someone could give some advice regarding the strategy in general, and if there are some solid cards that I am missing (*affordable* solid cards...Survival of the Fittest a little too costly) or should avoid. I am going to have to make some cuts obviously to get down to 60 cards. Appreciate all the help!
You might want to look at some RUG madness lists. Roar of the Wurm comes to mind as a good undercosted creature, but I think your discard outlets could be improved.
Thanks. I agree, the flashback feature of Roar of the Wurm makes it a very enticing option for my deck. Between Faithless Looting, Surge of Strength, Fauna Shaman, Chandra Ablaze, and just attacking freely with Anger, Brawn and Genesis I figured I could get the latter 3 cards in the graveyard pretty quickly. Any suggestions for effective and cheap mana cost RG discard outlets, or maybe I go enchantment/artifact route?
Chandra Ablaze probably isn't very good here. It's really slow at 6 mana. Fauna shaman is amazing, but if you aren't playing vengevines it's also kinda slow. You're currently running 4 brawn/anger/genesis. That's probably too much, and I'm not convinced you even need Brawn. Check out some pauper RG madness lists online. The strategy is far more agressive than your current list gives it credit for. In general if you're spending more than 4 mana on a card it's probably not worth it.
