My LGS just announced it was closing yesterday. This is one hell of a bad week for magic (for me).
I'll try to remain cautiously optimistic. We've got a good commander group that meets at a pub, and still one (less good) store in town. And I'm trying to get some cube drafts together. Hopefully this place will be able to migrate to safer pastures as well.
Damn I just recently started posting here, but I've gotten so much information from here. I absolutely will join the new forum! The atmosphere here is so good and I hope it will carry over to the new forum.
It's bittersweet MTGS is stopping, but after reading the posts I'm looking forward to a new chapter!
Thank you to MTGS staff and Good luck to the people building a new EDH forum!
I've never created a discord server previously, but I started one after hearing the news and not knowing where else to go discuss niche modern/edh decks other than Reddit. I planned for it to be a place where discussion in the Bogles primer could continue, but there are additional threads I've followed which don't have an alternate forum for discussion (that I'm aware of anyway), so I figured I'd make a bunch of different channels for anyone from MTGS/elsewhere to have somewhere to go. At least until everything with the new site is settled. Like I said, I'm by no means a discord pro, so if anyone is interested in porting over discussion from a particular thread and managing a channel by all means just let me know. The whole idea is just to try and preserve some discussions/topics for anyone wanting to stay in the loop, so they'd be able to discuss with folks who may be familiar faces names. Link for those interested.
I promise two things: first that as long as I am a part of the new site I will strive to make it at a minimum what we had here, and secondly that based on what we have discussed so far I think it will be even better in the long run.
Cyrogen and I will quite literally give up the EDH forums over our dead bodies.
I was surprised to read that article, and it made me quite sad that this place is going away. But on the other hand, it makes me glad that you guys are making a new place for us to discuss and I will be sure to follow. Really appreciate the effort and work you are putting into making this real. Thanks!
Cards on the table, I felt that some of MTGS's moderation went a little overboard sometimes, BUT the community as a whole and the maintenance therein always seemed like a labor of love.
I want the MTGS staff to know how much I appreciate their work, and even more so now that their effort and time is going into building a new home for this community. The dedication required for such a feat is incalculable.
EDIT: Something just occurred to me. What happens to the deck builder functionality? That thing took a lot of time and effort to bring to fruition, and it hasn't been around that long.

Could you elaborate some? What would you change about our moderation style?
Overall, there seems to be an itchy trigger finger when it comes to infractions. I've seen and received several that just didn't seem like a big deal. Personally, it came to a head twice: the whole 'Gay Kings' issue when Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis was spoiled, and in the thread discussing the site's article about Jeremy Whatshisname. It's been quite a while since both of those particular incidents, though, and I can't remember anything too draconic since.
Could you elaborate some? What would you change about our moderation style?
I've been here for a few years. I don't post all that often, but I read a lot. I don't recall personally receiving any infractions, but I do know that my husband ditched this site entirely after receiving an infraction for a "spam post", in which he was saying how much he liked whatever was being discussed. I've noticed a similar "itchy trigger finger", as another user put it, in that same vein.
Good feedback. The infraction system is definitely something we are reviewing to make sure it properly aligns with our vision. Where we will end up in regards to the two specific examples remains to be seen, but these types of infractions will definitely get discussed.
Could you elaborate some? What would you change about our moderation style?
Stop being thought police. Sometimes it’s like 1984 around here. For example, Person-A can call Person-B a “Nazi” with impunity, but B gets infracted for using the abbreviation “SJW”. My point isn’t that negative terminology should be permitted, but that moderators should moderate with equity, rather than favoring one group and alienating another. That sort of moderating has directly resulted in many decent members leaving the site for good. Members that were deemed toxic because they had different views than the moderators. 🙂
I know I've had more than a few warnings and some infractions, some deserved mind you, others I felt were unfair. It takes two to argue, so if you're gonna nail one person for arguing, you have to nail the other. Failure to do so is no different from Facebook censouring right wings while left wings spread their side of things.
Either allow both to speak freely, or censour both.
I love these forums, though I don't comment as often as I did initially, and I have gotten a few warnings in my time (all have been justified as I have a love hate relationship with the game a mile wide). Perhaps some people have a different view of the mods then I do, or are less honest with themselves about what is "reasonable speech". That all being said, I feel like the Mods have generally done a good job. You can't make everyone happy, and honestly, you probably should not try.
First time poster, looooong time lurker (I actually signed up for an account, just now, just to post here): thank you very much to the mods, admins, and all others here who have put so much time and effort into making this site fantastic. As my Magic group has slowly faded away over the years, this site (and now ECHREC) has been my remaining link to my favorite game.
In particular, I want to thank tstorm823 and DementedKirby for your contributions: you have influenced my play style and EDH deck interests more than any other sources (long live the G.O.A.T.!).
I'm very sad to see this site go, but I look forward to lurking around the planned next site and am optimistic that I will continue to find great content there!
I too have recovered many infractions that I felt were I fair. Sure some I may have deserved but others just seemed to be unfair. It was always for language, if I was using foul language, Inge it, that's fair. But then I was also getting infractions for slang. I got an infraction for saying "pissed off"
I get it, kids are on this site too, but they hear much worse at school, and I am expressing an opinion on a card or topic, I am not expressing a bodily functions or fluid, I am using a slang term in an expression of anger. (Usually it is of a card too, angered that it does something I do not like or angered that they missed the mark on what the card should do. Derevi is one of the cards that angers me.)
Well thanks for the feedback. In regards to Legend and 3drinks (and trying not to make this too political), there is seldom equality when it comes to a "both sides" issue to which you refer. To use an example from recent events, a white supremacist spewing hate and a dude throwing a milkshake are not equally at fault. One side can not-so-kindly let the door hit them on the way out, and I can't imagine us changing that.
More broadly with this and the other feedback, our moderation approach has changed over the years so it is quite possible that an infraction you received five years ago isn't something that you would be carded for today. I don't say this to defend or justify past actions, merely to say that times change and hopefully we will change with them on the new site. Like I said before, i don't know what our final set of rules will look like, but the goal is to make this a community site that focuses on inclusiveness without being too heavy handed.
In particular, I want to thank tstorm823 and DementedKirby for your contributions: you have influenced my play style and EDH deck interests more than any other sources (long live the G.O.A.T.!).
I would have built my shrine to Zedruu even if it was just for my own enjoyment, but I'm ecstatic to have people like you helping me absolutely ruin the statistics on EDHREC's page for Mirror of Fate.
